Setting Appliance Timers Before Shabbat

Sources explore the halakhic principles governing actions initiated before Shabbat that continue or complete themselves automatically during Shabbat. These texts examine whether setting a device in motion erev Shabbat—such that it performs labor on Shabbat itself—violates the prohibition against melacha.

What the sources say

The question of setting a dishwasher timer before Shabbos touches several distinct halachic issues: whether the washing constitutes forbidden labor on Shabbos itself, whether initiating an automated process before Shabbos is permissible, and whether the indirect causation involved affects the analysis.

Melacha on Shabbos

The Rambam (Mishneh Torah, Shabbat 1:5) rules that if one performs an action and a melachah certainly results from it — even without intent toward that melachah — one is liable, since it is known that the melachah cannot fail to occur.

Igros Moshe (Orach Chayim 4:60) argues that permitting such timer-driven operation is straightforwardly forbidden, since through such a clock all melachos could be performed on Shabbos in every factory, and there is no greater degradation of Shabbos than this.

Preparation before Shabbos

The foundational machlokes between Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel recorded in Mishnah Shabbat (1:5) concerns precisely this question: Beit Shammai holds that one may only initiate an action before Shabbos if it will complete while it is still day, while Beit Hillel permits initiating actions that will continue on their own throughout Shabbos.

The Shulchan Arukh (Orach Chayim 252:1) rules in accordance with Beit Hillel that one may begin a melachah on erev Shabbos close to nightfall even though it cannot be completed before Shabbos and completes on its own during Shabbos, citing examples such as soaking dyes and spreading nets.

The Tur (Orach Chayim 252) and Shulchan Arukh HaRav (Orach Chayim 252) likewise permit initiating such processes before Shabbos when the work proceeds on its own, and the Shulchan Arukh (Orach Chayim 252:5) adds explicitly that one may set up a clock-weight timepiece (זייגר) before Shabbos even though it will sound on Shabbos, since everyone knows such devices are set the day before.

The Arukh HaShulchan (Orach Chayim 252) explains the underlying principle: when the melachah completes on its own on Shabbos and the person does nothing at that point, it is permitted, and this is the ruling of Beit Hillel which is the accepted halacha.

Gerama (indirect causation)

Peninei Halakhah (Shabbat 17:10) rules that one may not use a dishwasher even via a Shabbos timer, because the machine will not activate unless the door is closed — meaning the person who closes the door after loading the dirty dishes directly causes its activation; however, in times of pressing need, when it would be extremely difficult to wash many dishes by hand, it is permitted because closing the door is considered grama, and an action performed via grama is not a true melachah and is permitted in times of need.

Peninei Halakhah (Shabbat 17:10) further notes that if one disables the mechanism that ties the machine's activation to the closing of the door — so that the dishwasher will run at the preset time regardless of whether the door is closed — then it is permitted even without pressing need to leave dirty dishes inside to be washed during Shabbos.

Mishnah Shabbat

Mishnah Shabbat 1:5

This mishnah establishes early principles about completing work before Shabbat and avoiding actions that will be seen as weekday labor on Shabbat. It provides a broad Chazal background for later timer discussions.

In this mishna there is a fundamental dispute between Beit Hillel and Beit Shammai: Must one begin refraining from actions prohibited on Shabbat on Shabbat eve? Or, may one initiate an action prior to Shabbat, even if he knows that it will continue on its own on Shabbat itself? These are the details of that dispute: Beit Shammai say: One may only soak dry ink in water and dry plants, which produce dyes, in water and vetch for animal food to soften them in water on Shabbat eve, adjacent to Shabbat,if there is clearly sufficient time for them to soak for their designated purpose while it is still day, before Shabbat begins, and their continued soaking on Shabbat will have no effect. And Beit Hillel permit doing so. Beit Shammai say: One may only place bundles of combed flax inside the oven on Shabbat eve if there is sufficient time so that they will be heated while it is still day. And one may only place wool into the dyer’s kettle if there is sufficient time for the wool to absorb the dye while it is still day. And Beit Hillel permit doing so. Beit Shammai say: One may spread traps for an animal and birds and fish only if there is sufficient time remaining in the day for them to be trapped in them while it is still day, and Beit Hillel permit doing so even if there is not sufficient time remaining in the day.

Mishneh Torah, Sabbath 1:5

If one did not intend a particular melacha it is permitted, but if one performed an act that necessarily causes a melacha to result as an inevitable consequence of that act, one is liable even without intending it, because it is known that the melacha cannot fail to occur.

One who performs labor on Shabbat is liable even if the labor itself is not necessary, since intentionally extinguishing a flame is labor; and one is liable even if one did not need the extinguishing itself but extinguished only incidentally to adjusting the oil, pottery, or wick.

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 252:1

This siman discusses setting mechanisms before Shabbat that will continue to operate on Shabbat, including the classic rules of גרמא and actions begun before Shabbat. It is a central practical source for using timers and appliances that run during Shabbat.

It is permitted to start an action on Friday near darkness even though the work cannot be completed on Friday and can only be finished on Shabbat. It is permitted to soak/ dissolve a ink or dye in water if it dissolves during Shabbat. It is permitted to put bundles of flax in the oven in order that they be whitened. It is permitted to put wool inside a large pot that is not on the fire, and it is covered with mud. But if the pot is on the fire it is forbidden, lest one stirs the coals. And even if it is not on the fire but it isn’t covered in mud, it is forbidden, lest he stir it with his hand. The one who stirs the pot even if it is not on the fire is liable because of cooking. It is permitted to spread out traps for animals, birds, and fish even though they will be trapped on Shabbat. It is permitted to sell to non-Jews and load it for him close to dark as long as he leaves the door of his house while it is still day. Rema: And there are those that permit it when the non-Jew leaves on Shabbat if the non-Jew designates a place on the next day in the house of a Jew. And there are those who are strict in this matter (Mordechai). See below Siman 325. It is permitted to open water to the garden and the water will continue and flow all of Shabbat. It is permitted to put קילור, thick collyrium (salve) on the eye even though it is forbidden to put it on on Shabbat. It is permitted to perfume one’s clothes when the process of perfuming is continued all of Shabbat, even if the perfume is placed in a vessel, since one is not commanded to rest his vessels. It is permitted to put barley in a tub to soak, and to load the beams of the olive press or wine press while it is still day upon the olives or the grapes, and the oil or wine that comes from them is permitted [And see Siman 320 Seif 2]. Similarly, if unripe grapes or ears are mashed while it is still day, it is permitted to drink that which comes forth from it. It is permitted to put wheat in a water mill near dark. Rema: And we do not worry to the sound of the voices of those who say 'the mill of this person is grinding on Shabbat'. There are those who forbid regarding mills and in any place that there is a worry about listening to the sound (Tur; Tosefos; Rosh; Sma"g; Hagahos Maimoni; Teshuvos Mahari"v; Agur) and this is our custom initially. However in a place of loss there are those who are lenient as as explained above at the end of Siman 244. One may place a keli of a weight called זייגר from Erev Shabbat even though he hears a voice announcing the hours of Shabbat, because everyone knows that it is their way to place it there from yesterday (Tur Agur) and see below Seif 338

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 247:3

This siman addresses setting a non-Jew to work or arranging before Shabbat for work to continue into Shabbat, and it is often cited in discussions of preparations made erev Shabbat that lead to activity on Shabbat.

(3) If he employs him daily, something fixed every day when he travels and when he returns, but he isn't particular with him regarding when he travels, if it’s the eve of Shabbat then it’s forbidden because it’s considered like Shabbat [and] it appears he stipulated with him about it. (4) If the non-Jew carries the letter for free, even if he gave it to him on the eve of Shabbat, it is permitted because the non-Jew is only doing it to return favor because of what he receives from him [prior]. This is like they established a price. RAMA: There are some who disagree and maintain that anyone who does it for free is prohibited and it’s good to be stringent about this but in a place where the non-Jew takes the initiative with the Jew saying that he’ll travel for free, certainly his intention is on the benefit that he will receive from him and that’s permitted. He argues that permitting this would lead to a severe desecration of Shabbat, as people would run entire factories and perform all manner of work automatically.

Peninei Halakhah, Shabbat

Peninei Halakhah, Shabbat 17:10

This modern halakhic work discusses practical Shabbat observance, including setting timers and pre-Shabbat preparations for appliances. It is helpful for a clear contemporary presentation of the issue.

One may not even turn on a dishwasher via a timer, because the dishwasher is designed so that it will not go on unless the door is closed. This means that the person who closes the door to the dishwasher after the dishes have been loaded causes it to turn on (SSK 12:37). However, in times of need, when there will be a great need to wash many dishes on Shabbat and it would be extremely difficult to wash them by hand, one may set the dishwasher with a timer. This is because causing it to turn on by closing the door is considered grama. Since an action performed via grama is not a true melakha, in times of need it is permitted (above 9:9; Responsa Me-rosh Tzurim §30). If one can disable the system that makes the dishwasher’s activation dependent on closing the door, so that the dishwasher will go on at the set time even if the door is not shut, then even in ordinary circumstances one may load the dirty dishes and have the dishwasher wash them during Shabbat (R. Yeḥiel Faust, Le-ohavai Yesh 1).
