Learning to Believe in People

Jewish sources explore how to cultivate trust and faith in others through judging them favorably, recognizing their inner dignity, and understanding human fallibility. The texts range from foundational teachings in Pirkei Avot and the Talmud on charitable judgment to later philosophical works on the spiritual capacity within each person.

What the sources say

The clearest throughline is the mitzvah of judging every person favorably, which Chazal frame as the mechanism by which one comes to trust and believe in others: Pirkei Avot 1:6 instructs one to judge all people to the side of merit, and Pirkei Avot 2:4 adds Hillel's warning not to judge another until reaching his place. Shabbat 127b illustrates this with the story of the laborer whose employer's seemingly impossible excuses turn out to be true, teaching that one who judges favorably is himself judged favorably. Taanit 20b shows Rabbi Elazar learning through humiliation to withhold harsh judgment even of an unattractive stranger.

Likutei Moharan 282 develops this into a method: one must search even in a wicked person for the small point of good, and by judging him favorably on that basis one actually elevates him and can bring him to repentance, reading this out of the verse 'in yet a little bit the wicked man is not' (Tehillim 37:10). Tanya 30 likewise directs a person to be humble before every person, even the most worthless, because one does not know what circumstance drove him to sin.

A deeper layer grounds this trust in the recognition of the tzelem elokim within every person: Netivot Olam, Netiv Ahavat Reia 1 explains that love of one's fellow stems from the shared divine image, which makes two people essentially one; Tomer Devorah, Chapter 1 similarly roots proper conduct in resembling the Creator's own attributes of mercy. Tanya 32 extends this to explain that all Israelites are called true brothers because of the shared root of their souls, which is the basis for love and trust even with one who is not a close companion. Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 7 adds that the human being's root in the loftiest of worlds grants him the power to rebuild and correct, a dignity that underlies trusting in people's capacity for good.

Several of Rav Kook's Ein Aya passages extend the same theme toward believing in people's ultimate value and capacity for correction: Rav Kook (Ein Aya, Shabbat 2:210) teaches that even one favorable advocate out of a thousand can save a person, because anything that can bring benefit to the world cannot ultimately be lost from existence. Rav Kook (Ein Aya, Shabbat 2:192) cautions that great people must model their good traits carefully so that others learn the genuine, unspoiled form of qualities like trust. Rav Kook (Ein Aya, Berakhot 9:185) and Rav Kook (Ein Aya, Berakhot 1:43) both tie this to bitachon in Hashem, suggesting that the private, particular good hidden in a person's situation reflects the same hidden good one must trust exists more broadly.

A related set of sources treats bitachon in Hashem as the model for trust generally: Duties of the Heart, Fourth Treatise on Trust 1:1 defines trust as the soul's rest in relying that the one trusted will act for one's good, Sefat Emet, Shemot, Terumah 1 teaches that one's trust is matched by what one is in fact granted, and Ramban reads 'trust in Hashem and do good' as teaching that trust must precede and support right action. Shem MiShmuel, Rosh Hashanah 5672 warns against the despair of seeing oneself as lost, urging instead the firm resolve to still reach one's goal.

Other sources address the halachic category of trustworthiness (ne'emanut) rather than interpersonal belief as such: Mishlei 11:13 contrasts the gossip who reveals secrets with the trustworthy soul who conceals a matter, Yevamot 87b discusses the force of a single witness's credibility, and Ohr Hashem, Second Treatise, Sixth Principle 2:2 and Kuzari 5:1 discuss trust in the transmission of tradition and sages. Even Sheleimah 8:8 and Even Sheleimah 1:10 address related themes of internalizing fear of sin and correction through study and rebuke, which bear on character formation more than directly on believing in people.

Judaism's Life Changing Ideas; A Weekly Reading of the Jewish Bible, Bereshit; The Faith of God 14 addresses the question most directly, arguing that trusting in the thoughts and feelings of those closest to us—a spouse, children, friends—is itself an act of faith no less than faith in God, and that the attempt to found belief in people on pure rational proof fails just as a purely rational philosophy failed at the dawn of the Enlightenment.

Igros Moshe EH 1:25 treats trusting a particular person as grounded in recognizing that he has never been known to lie, and applies Rava's principle that one who is as trusted as two witnesses should be relied upon in practice, showing how this trust operates as a practical halachic category rather than only a character trait.

Pirkei Avot 1:6

Yehoshua ben Perachiah teaches, “Make for yourself a teacher, acquire for yourself a friend, and judge every person favorably.” The mishnah directly links human growth, friendship, and giving others the benefit of the doubt.

Shabbat 127b

Shabbat 127b:2-4

The Talmud lists judging every person favorably among deeds whose fruits are enjoyed in this world while the principal reward remains for the World to Come. The sugya grounds charitable interpretation of others in a major religious virtue.

The Sages taught in a baraita: One who judges another favorably is himself judged favorably. And there was an incident involving a certain person who descended from the Upper Galilee and was hired to work for a certain homeowner in the South for three years. On the eve of the Day of Atonement, he said to the homeowner: Give me my wages, and I will go and feed my wife and children. The homeowner said to him: I have no money. He said to him: In that case, give me my wages in the form of produce. He said to him: I have none. The worker said to him: Give me my wages in the form of land. The homeowner said to him: I have none. The worker said to him: Give me my wages in the form of animals. He said to him: I have none. The worker said to him: Give me cushions and blankets. He said to him: I have none. The worker slung his tools over his shoulder behind him and went to his home in anguish. After the festival of Sukkot, the homeowner took the worker’s wages in his hand, along with a burden that required three donkeys, one laden with food, one laden with drink, and one laden with types of sweets, and went to the worker’s home. After they ate and drank, the homeowner gave him his wages. The homeowner said to him: When you said to me: Give me my wages, and I said: I have no money, of what did you suspect me? Why did you not suspect me of trying to avoid paying you? The worker answered, I said: Perhaps the opportunity to purchase merchandise [perakmatya] inexpensively presented itself, and you purchased it with the money that you owed me, and therefore you had no money available. The homeowner asked: And when you said to me: Give me animals, and I said: I have no animals, of what did you suspect me? The worker answered: I said: Perhaps the animals are hired to others. The homeowner asked: When you said to me: Give me land, and I said: I have no land, of what did you suspect me? The worker answered: I said: Perhaps the land is leased to others, and you cannot take the land from the lessees. The homeowner asked: And when you said to me: Give me produce, and I said: I have no produce, of what did you suspect me? The worker answered: I said: Perhaps they are not tithed, and that was why you could not give them to me. The homeowner asked: And when I said: I have no cushions or blankets, of what did you suspect me? The worker answered: I said: Perhaps he consecrated all his property to Heaven and therefore has nothing available at present.

Ta'anit 20b

Taanit 20b:1-3

The story of Rabbi Elazar ben Shimon and the ugly man culminates in the rebuke, “Go to the craftsman who made me.” It exposes the harm of dismissing someone by appearance and teaches the discipline of seeing the person beyond first impressions.

He happened upon an exceedingly ugly person, who said to him: Greetings to you, my rabbi, but Rabbi Elazar did not return his greeting. Instead, Rabbi Elazar said to him: Worthless [reika] person, how ugly is that man. Are all the people of your city as ugly as you? The man said to him: I do not know, but you should go and say to the Craftsman Who made me: How ugly is the vessel you made. When Rabbi Elazar realized that he had sinned and insulted this man merely on account of his appearance, he descended from his donkey and prostrated himself before him, and he said to the man: I have sinned against you; forgive me. The man said to him: I will not forgive you until you go to the Craftsman Who made me and say: How ugly is the vessel you made. He walked behind the man, trying to appease him, until they reached Rabbi Elazar’s city. The people of his city came out to greet him, saying to him: Greetings to you, my rabbi, my rabbi, my master, my master. The man said to them: Who are you calling my rabbi, my rabbi? They said to him: To this man, who is walking behind you. He said to them: If this man is a rabbi, may there not be many like him among the Jewish people. They asked him: For what reason do you say this? He said to them: He did such and such to me. They said to him: Even so, forgive him, as he is a great Torah scholar. He said to them: For your sakes I forgive him, provided that he accepts upon himself not to become accustomed to behave like this. Immediately, Rabbi Elazar, son of Rabbi Shimon, entered the study hall and taught: A person should always be soft like a reed and he should not be stiff like a cedar, as one who is proud like a cedar is likely to sin. And therefore, due to its gentle qualities, the reed merited that a quill is taken from it to write with it a Torah scroll, phylacteries, and mezuzot.

Pirkei Avot 2:4

Pirkei Avot 2:4

Hillel’s teaching, “Do not separate yourself from the community; do not trust yourself until the day of your death,” emphasizes that people need community and ongoing humility rather than self-sufficiency. It supports learning to rely on others while recognizing human fallibility.

Berakhot 58a

Berakhot 58a:2-3

The blessing on seeing a large gathering, “Who knows the secrets,” acknowledges that each person has an interior world inaccessible to us. This encourages humility about judging others and openness to realities we cannot see.

And Rav Hamnuna said: One who sees multitudes of Israel, six hundred thousand Jews, recites: Blessed…Who knows all secrets. One who sees multitudes of gentiles recites: “Your mother shall be sore ashamed, she that bore you shall be confounded; behold, the hindermost of the nations shall be a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert” (Jeremiah 50:12). The Sages taught in a Tosefta: One who sees multitudes of Israel recites: Blessed…Who knows all secrets. Why is this? He sees a whole nation whose minds are unlike each other and whose faces are unlike each other, and He Who knows all secrets, God, knows what is in each of their hearts. The Gemara relates: Ben Zoma once saw a multitude [okhlosa] of Israel while standing on a stair on the Temple Mount. He immediately recited: Blessed…Who knows all secrets and Blessed…Who created all these to serve me.

Ohr Hashem, Second Treatise, Sixth Principle 2:2

Crescas describes obedience to the Great Court and the prohibition against deviating from its ruling as safeguards against accepting whatever one initially imagines, emphasizing the Torah’s command to follow the determinations transmitted through the nation’s sages, prophets, and ancestors.

Duties of the Heart, Fourth Treatise on Trust 1:1

Ramban

Ramban

The passage explains that Tehillim’s “בטח בה' ועשה טוב” links trust in God with doing mitzvos: one should rely on God for help in fulfilling them, actively pursue good deeds, and not neglect them because of limited ability.

Tomer Devorah, Chapter 1

Tomer Devorah 1:1

Rema מפאנו's discussion of imitating divine attributes begins with bearing others' wrongs and responding with compassion. It offers a demanding model of extending trust and generosity even after disappointment.

Chapter 1 - That it is fitting for a person to resemble his Creator: It is fitting for a person to resemble his Creator and then he will be [configured] in the secret of the Highest Form, [both] in image and likeness. As if he is alike in his body but not in his actions, he betrays the Form; and they will say about him, "A lovely form, but ugly deeds." As behold, the essence of the Highest Image and Likeness is His actions. And what will it benefit him to have the structure of his limbs like the Highest Form, but not resemble his Creator in his actions? Therefore it is fitting that he should [make his actions] resemble the actions of the Crown (Keter), which are the thirteen highest traits of mercy. And they are hinted to in the secret of the verses (Michah 7:18-20), "Who is a power like You; He will again have mercy on us; You shall give truth." If so, it is fitting that these thirteen traits [also] be found in man. And now we will explain these thirteen actions that are fitting to be with him. Behold, this is a ‎trait that a person must practice - I mean tolerance; and, so, to be insulted, even to this extent, and nonetheless not to ‎withhold one’s goodness from the recipient.‎ A person [should] learn [from this] how much he needs to be tolerant, to carry the yoke of his fellow and his evils that he did against him; to the measure such that his evil that he sinned against him is still in existence - and he tolerates [it] until his fellow repairs [it], or that it is nullified by itself, and similar to it.

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 7

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 7:3-4

Rav Chaim Volozhiner explains the human being's spiritual capacity and responsibility. The passage can frame belief in people as recognizing the latent divine image and potential within each person.

And the reason provided in chapter 5—that because the root-of-the-soul-Neshama is the most lofty and innermost of the worlds—and the reason that was explained in the last chapter—because it is comprised of all of the worlds—both are identical, as was explained. And for this reason, to him alone was given the power of free will, to direct himself and the worlds to whichever side he desires. Or even if he already caused and brought about (heaven forefend) via his sins the demolition of the worlds and the structures of the Vehicle, and their destruction and descent (heaven forefend), he has the power and opportunity to correct what he perverted, and to rebuild the demolished, from the perspective that he integrates and is in partnership with all of them. And what King Dovid (OBM) said (Tehillim 121): “God-YHV”H is your shadow on your right side,” that is to imply that how an object’s shadow moves is only per the movements of that object, in what direction it moves. By this same metaphor it’s as if He (blessed be His name) joins in to move the worlds based on the movements and intentions of man’s actions below. And so it is explained in the Midrash: “The Holy One (blessed be He) said to Moshe: go and say to them, to Israel, that my Name is ‘I will be as I will be’”. What is ‘I will be as I will be’? Just as you are with Me, in that same way I am with you. And so said Dovid: ‘God-YHV”H is your shadow on your right side’—What is ‘God-YHV”H is your shadow’? Like your shadow. As your shadow, when you play with it, it plays with you, and if you cry, it cries opposite you, and if you show it an angry or a cordial face, it does the same to you, so too the Holy One (blessed be He) ‘God-YHV”H is your shadow’—just as you are with Him, He is with you.” The quote ends here.

The Gra explains that when fear of sin precedes Torah wisdom, a person studies to discover the proper path, and what is found through great effort becomes dear and memorable; without fear of sin, repeated study does not endure because the learning is not valued or attended to.

Likutei Moharan 282

Likutei Moharan 282:1

Rebbe Nachman teaches the practice of searching for the “good point” in another person, even when the person appears deeply flawed. This is one of the clearest Jewish sources for actively learning to believe in another's goodness and possibility.

Know, a person must judge everyone favorably (Avot 1:6). Even someone who is completely wicked, it is necessary to search and find in him some modicum of good; that in that little bit he is not wicked. And by finding in him a modicum of good and judging him favorably, one genuinely elevates him to the scale of merit and can bring him to repent. This is the aspect of “In yet a little bit the wicked man is not; you will reflect upon his place and he will not be there” (Psalms 37:10). That is, Scripture warns to judge everyone favorably. Even if you see that he is completely wicked, you must search and seek the little bit of good in him, wherein he is not wicked. This is: In yet a little bit the wicked man is not—You must seek the “yet a little bit” of good that he still has within him, because in that place he is not wicked. For although he is wicked, how is it possible that he does not still possess even a little bit of good? Is it possible that throughout his life he never once did some mitzvah or good deed? And by your finding in him yet a little bit of good wherein he is not wicked, and your judging him favorably, you genuinely elevate him from the scale of guilt to the scale of merit, until, as a result of this, he returns [to God] in repentance.

Tanya 30

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 30:1-3

Tanya teaches that one should sincerely remain humble before every person and refrain from judging others until considering their circumstances, since a person’s environment, daily exposure to temptation, and individual nature affect the strength of their evil inclination.

This also a person must resolve in his heart to fulfill the instruction of our Rabbis, of blessed memory, “And be humble of spirit before every person.” This you must be in true sincerity, in the presence of any individual, even in the presence of the most worthless of worthless men. This accords with the instruction of our Sages, “Do not judge your fellow man until you have stood in his place.” For it is his “place” that causes him to sin, because his livelihood requires him to go to the market for the whole day and to be one of those who “sit at the [street] corners,” where his eyes behold all the temptations; the eye sees and the heart desires, and his evil nature is kindled like a baker’s red-hot oven, as is written in Hosea, “He burns like a flaming fire….” It is different, however, with him who goes but little to the marketplace and who remains in his house for the greater part of the day; or even if he spends the whole day in the market but is possibly not so passionate by nature—for the evil inclination of all people is not the same: there is one whose nature…, as is explained elsewhere.

Tanya 32

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 32:2

Tanya 32 grounds love of fellow Jews in the shared spiritual soul rather than in external differences. It offers a deep basis for believing in people: to see their essential self beyond surface behavior.

For, whereas one despises and loathes one’s body, while as for the soul and spirit, who can know their greatness and excellence in their root and source in the living G–d? Being, moreover, all of a kind and all having one Father—therefore, all Israelites are called real brothers by virtue of the source of their souls in the One G–d; only the bodies are separated. Hence in the case of those who give major consideration to their bodies while regarding their souls as of secondary importance, there can be no true love and brotherhood among them, but only [a love] which is dependent on a [transitory] thing. But as for the person who is not one’s colleague and is not on intimate terms with him, Hillel the Elder said, “Be of the disciples of Aaron, loving peace and pursuing peace, loving the creatures and drawing them near to the Torah.” This means that even in the case of those who are removed from G–d’s Torah and His service and are therefore classified simply as “creatures,” one must attract them with strong cords of love, perchance one might succeed in drawing them near to the Torah and Divine service. Even if one fails, one has not forfeited the merit of the precept of neighborly love. Even with regard to those who are close to him, and whom he has rebuked, yet they had not repented of their sins, when he is enjoined to hate them, there still remains the duty to love them also, and both are right: hatred because of the wickedness in them, and love on account of the aspect of the hidden good in them, which is the Divine spark in them, which animates their divine soul. He should also awaken pity in his heart for [the divine soul], for she is held captive, as it were, in the evil of the sitra achara that triumphs over her in wicked people. Compassion destroys hatred and awakens love, as is known from the [interpretation of the] text, “To [the house of] Jacob who redeemed Abraham.”

Shem Mishmuel explains the dispute over “Bnei Maron” as different ways a person should view himself: either with humility as insignificant, while avoiding despair, or as standing precariously and therefore still capable of rising, and he adds that one should adopt the resolve of David’s soldiers, trust in God, devote himself to Torah, and stand before Him with determination.

Rav Kook (Ein Aya, Shabbat 2:192)

Ein Aya, Shabbat 2:192

Kook states that every good trait can be distorted into its opposite, so spiritually great people must exemplify its proper boundaries and purity; accordingly, those who most trust in God should be especially careful and diligent in their human actions, demonstrating that genuine trust in God brings only good and no harm.

Rav Kook (Ein Aya, Berakhot 9:185)

Ein Aya, Berakhot 9:185

Kook explains that habituating oneself to say “whatever Heaven does is for the good” and cultivating trust in God reveals the hidden good even in personally difficult circumstances, allowing one’s private experience to reflect a broader, general truth.

Judaism's Life Changing Ideas; A Weekly Reading of the Jewish Bible, Bereshit; The Faith of God 14

The passage argues that trusting other people’s thoughts and feelings—such as believing that loved ones love or believe in us—is also a matter of faith, challenging the claim that belief in God is irrational while trust in people is rational.

Ein Aya, Berakhot 1:43

Kook explains that people should accept the limits of their understanding as beneficial, since just as seeing the harmful beings described by Abba Binyamin would make it impossible to endure, withheld knowledge can likewise be a kindness.
