Why is the akeida considered the supreme nisayon of Avraham — wasn't his earlier willingness to be thrown into the kivshan ha-esh already complete mesirat nefesh?

Rabbeinu Bahya, Bereshit 22:1

Q — Why is the akeida considered the supreme nisayon of Avraham — wasn't his earlier willingness to be thrown into the kivshan ha-esh already complete mesirat nefesh?

A — Rabbeinu Bachya maps three ascending levels of ahavat Hashem: one who proclaims the King's praise publicly; one who gives all his wealth for Him; one who gives his own life for Him. Avraham had already mastered all three — he proclaimed Hashem's unity ("ויקרא שם בשם ה' אל עולם"), kept an open house with four entrances at the four directions, and was thrown into the furnace al kiddush Hashem. The akeida transcends this entire hierarchy: a man of one hundred who was given Yitzchak only after a lifetime of yearning, whose natural attachment to a son of thirty-seven is the deepest possible love a person can feel, slaughtering that son himself, by his own hand, after three deliberate days — this is incommensurable with mesirat nefesh of one's own life. The chiddush: there is a grade of ahavah measured not against fear of death but against the deepest natural attachment of the heart, and only there is the מדרגת "אוהבי" complete.
