Blessings for Children in Tanakh

The Hebrew Bible contains several paternal blessings bestowed upon children and descendants, ranging from Noah's blessing of his sons to Jacob's famous formula for blessing children—"May God make you like Ephraim and like Manasseh"—which became a enduring model for Jewish blessing practice. These passages include blessings that invoke divine protection, fertility, abundance, and the fulfillment of covenantal promises.

What the sources say

Tanach records a cluster of patriarchal blessings over children that became the model for all later ones: Jacob's blessing of Ephraim and Manasseh (Bereishit 48:15-16, Bereishit 48:20), Isaac's blessing of Jacob (Bereishit 27:27-29), and Isaac's further blessing sending Jacob to Paddan-aram (Bereishit 28:3-4). Rashi (Bereishit 48:20) states that this is precisely why the formula endures: one who comes to bless his sons says, 'God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh,' and the Ramban (Bereishit 48:15-16) explains that Jacob's blessing of Joseph's sons was in fact Joseph's own blessing, channeled through his children.

Jacob's deathbed address gives a full set of tribal blessings, one for each son (Bereishit 49:1-28), paralleled later by Moses's blessing of the tribes before his death (Devarim 33:1-29), and the Kli Yakar (Devarim 33:24) highlights the blessing to Asher as one promising he will be blessed through both sons and daughters.

Noah's blessing of Shem and Japheth over Canaan is also framed as a blessing bestowed on offspring (Bereishit 9:26-27).

The Priestly Blessing itself, though addressed to the nation, is the formula Aaron and his sons were commanded to recite (Bamidbar 6:22-27), and Sifrei Bamidbar 41 and the Ramban (Bamidbar 6:24-26) expound its components—light of Torah, light of the Shechinah, and favor—as blessings of divine grace; Bamidbar Rabbah 11:5 further reads 'yevarechecha' and 'yishmerecha' within this verse as referring distinctly to blessing with sons and protection for daughters.

Tehillim supplies its own blessings for children: the fruitful household with children like olive saplings and the merit of seeing children's children (Tehillim 128:3-6), and sons described as an inheritance from God, like arrows in a warrior's hand (Tehillim 127:3-5), which Rashi (Tehillim 127:3-4) reinterprets homiletically as referring to disciples who are like sons; Midrash Tanchuma, Bamidbar 17 adds that this same verse teaches daughters too are called a reward.

The prophets extend the theme of blessing into promises for the future: Yeshayahu foresees children taught by God and abounding in peace (Yeshayahu 54:13) and a people blessed by God whose offspring remain with them (Yeshayahu 65:23), while Yirmiyahu promises that children will return to their own borders (Yirmiyahu 31:16-17).

Beyond the explicit blessing texts, the sources also touch related themes: Sotah 36b reads 'veyidgu larov' from Jacob's blessing of Ephraim and Manasseh as the source for Joseph's offspring being immune to the evil eye; Berakhot 7a records God's own prayer to deal with His children in mercy; Sukkah 38a discusses a son reciting a blessing on his father's behalf; Sefer HaIkkarim (Maamar 4 19:1) raises the conceptual question of whether patriarchal blessings function as prayer or as prophecy; and Zohar Chadash, Midrash Rut describes Jacob being lifted and blessed with seven blessings, with the ministering angels proclaiming his children's merit; Ein Aya, Maaser Sheni, Hodaat HaAretz 10 likewise expounds the blessing of a nation's sons and daughters as loyalty to their people.

Rav Mordechai Eliyahu (Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Shabbat 1 19:25) records the custom that a father places his hand on his children's heads on Friday night and blesses them with the words 'Yesimcha Elokim,' directly continuing the biblical formula of Bereishit 48:20.

Revavos Ephraim (5:195) traces the practice of blessing children on Friday night before Kiddush, concluding that the earlier custom was children kissing their parents' hands, especially the mother's, with the blessing itself apparently developing alongside that practice, and he also notes the blessing 'Yesimcha' recited at a circumcision and the omission of mothers' names from children's blessings.

Igros Kodesh, letter 1920 addresses a request for a blessing to be granted sons, and in that context recommends strengthening love of Israel, Torah, and God together with daily charity as practices tied to being blessed with children.

Genesis 48:15-16

Genesis 48:15-16

Jacob blesses Joseph's sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, invoking God as the One who shepherded him and the angel who redeemed him, praying that they be called by the names of the patriarchs and multiply in the midst of the earth.

And he blessed Joseph, saying, “The God in whose ways my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, The God who has been my shepherd from my birth to this day— The Angel who has redeemed me from all harm— Bless the lads. In them may my name be recalled, And the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, And may they be teeming multitudes upon the earth.”

Genesis 48:20

Genesis 48:20

Jacob establishes the enduring formula for blessing children: “May God make you like Ephraim and like Manasseh,” placing the younger Ephraim before Manasseh.

So he blessed them that day, saying, “By you shall Israel invoke blessings, saying: God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.” Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh.

Sotah 36b

Sotah 36b:6-7

Chachmei Bavel explain that Joseph’s descendants are protected from the evil eye, deriving this from Jacob’s blessing that they should multiply like fish, which are covered by water and therefore not subject to its dominion.

The Gemara explains that Joshua said to them: Go and hide yourselves in the forests, so that the evil eye will not have dominion over you, as you are such a large number of people. The tribe of Joseph said to him: The evil eye does not have dominion over the offspring of Joseph, as it is written: “Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine by a fountain” (Genesis 49:22), and Rabbi Abbahu says: Do not read the verse as saying: “By a fountain [alei ayin]”; rather, read it as: Those who rise above the evil eye [olei ayin], teaching that Joseph and his descendants are not susceptible to the evil eye. The Gemara cites an alternative source for the assertion that the evil eye holds no sway over Joseph and his descendants: Rabbi Yosei, son of Rabbi Ḥanina, said that it is derived from here: Jacob blessed Joseph’s children and said: “And let them grow [veyidgu] into a multitude in the midst of the earth” (Genesis 48:16). Just as with regard to fish [dagim] in the sea, waters cover them and the evil eye therefore has no dominion over them, so too, with regard to Joseph’s descendants, the evil eye has no dominion over them.

Berakhot 7a:3-4

The Talmud discusses the significance of blessing and divine favor, including the idea that God desires the blessing of the righteous; it provides rabbinic context for parental blessing.

Rav Zutra bar Tovia said that Rav said: God says: May it be My will that My mercy will overcome My anger towards Israel for their transgressions, and may My mercy prevail over My other attributes through which Israel is punished, and may I conduct myself toward My children, Israel, with the attribute of mercy, and may I enter before them beyond the letter of the law. Similarly, it was taught in a baraita that Rabbi Yishmael ben Elisha, the High Priest, said: Once, on Yom Kippur, I entered the innermost sanctum, the Holy of Holies, to offer incense, and in a vision I saw Akatriel Ya, the Lord of Hosts, one of the names of God expressing His ultimate authority, seated upon a high and exalted throne (see Isaiah 6). And He said to me: Yishmael, My son, bless Me. I said to Him the prayer that God prays: “May it be Your will that Your mercy overcome Your anger, and may Your mercy prevail over Your other attributes, and may You act toward Your children with the attribute of mercy, and may You enter before them beyond the letter of the law.” The Holy One, Blessed be He, nodded His head and accepted the blessing. This event teaches us that you should not take the blessing of an ordinary person lightly. If God asked for and accepted a man’s blessing, all the more so that a man must value the blessing of another man.

Rashi explains that Israel will bless its children with the words “May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh,” preserving Jacob’s blessing as a liturgical family practice.

IN THEE SHALL ISRAEL BLESS — When one wishes to bless his sons he will bless them by reciting the formula with which they were blessed — a man will say to his son, “God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh.”

Ramban on Genesis 48:15-16

Ramban analyzes Jacob’s blessing of Joseph’s sons, including the invocation of the patriarchs and the angelic redemption, and clarifies the structure and significance of the blessing.

AND HE BLESSED JOSEPH, AND SAID. The meaning of this verse is that in order to bless Joseph, out of his love for him, he blessed his sons. Scripture is relating that Joseph had no other children and his entire blessing was inherent in the blessing of these boys. It may be that [the blessing here was directed at Joseph himself, stating that] the other children who will be born to him in the future shall be called by the name of their brothers and be blessed with their blessing. In my opinion this latter interpretation is correct since the prophet Jacob said, And the children that were born (‘holad’to’) after them, shall be thine, and his word would not be in vain. However, Joseph did beget children after that, just as is the opinion of Onkelos, who translated: “And the children that you will beget after them.” And thus, asher holad’to is a past tense replacing a future, just as in the verse, Which I took out of the hand of the Amorite, and many additional verses besides. Even in line with the literal interpretation of Scripture it would appear that Joseph had children that he had begotten after his father came to him in Egypt. This is obvious from the fact that Jacob found it necessary to elaborate rather than say, “And now thy sons, Ephraim and Menasheh, who were born to thee, shall be mine as Reuben and Simeon, and the children that will be born shall be thine.” This is the reason why Scripture states, And unto Joseph were born two sons before the year of famine came, since after the famine additional children were born to him, but Scripture does not mention them as there is no need for us to know of them [since they were absorbed into the tribes of Ephraim and Menasheh]. THE G-D, BEFORE WHOM MY FATHERS, ABRAHAM AND ISAAC, DID WALK, THE G-D WHO HATH BEEN MY SHEPHERD ALL MY LIFE LONG UNTO THIS DAY. The prophet calls upon the G-d of his fathers Who [has] the greatness and the power and Who did great and tremendous things for them, and [after that he refers to Him in a synonymous way and] he calls upon the true G-d, Who had been his shepherd all his life. It is possible that the word haro’eh (shepherd) — in the phrase, Who hath been my shepherd — is derived from the word rei’ah (friend), as in the verse, Thine own friend (‘rei’acha’), and thy father’s friend, forsake not, for in that attribute there is peace and friendship. Do not find difficulty with the expression, all my life unto this day, in connection with that which we have written on the verse, And he offered sacrifices unto the G-d of his father Isaac, for from his very inception He did indeed lead him in the true path, but His attribute of truth was not brought to bear upon him completely until he returned to the land of his ancestors as he was outside of the Land, and also because he was constrained to conduct himself in a crafty manner towards Laban, and that was not the path of truth.

Ramban on Numbers 6:24-26

Ramban explains the priestly blessing as divine blessing and protection on the path of truth, God’s shining favor and grace toward the person, and peace in the home.

Sefer HaIkkarim, Maamar 4 19:1

Sefer HaIkkarim, Maamar 4 19:1

Albo presents a difficulty concerning the blessings bestowed by prophets, the righteous, and the pious: whether they are prayers or declarations of future events, since either view raises questions about Yitzchak’s blessing of Yaakov and Esav.

Rashi on Psalms 127:3-4

Rashi on Psalms 127:3-4

Rashi explains that “sons” refers to disciples whom a person establishes and regards as sons, while “the reward is the fruit of the innards” refers to the reward of Torah held in the heart.

Behold, the heritage of the Lord for that man [who banishes sleep from his eyes]. sons These are the disciples whom he sets up, who are to him like sons. the reward is the fruit of the innards The reward is the fruit of the Torah that is in his heart as it is said (Prov. 22:18): “For it is pleasant that you guard them in your innards.”

Kli Yakar on Deuteronomy 33:24

Kli Yakar on Deuteronomy 33:24

Kli Yakar explains Asher’s blessing as happiness and blessing from both sons and daughters, and interprets “as your days, your strength” as continued strength and health in old age, possibly through oil or through having children in both youth and old age.

“And to Asher he said, blessed of sons is Asher.” Since regarding his birth it is written Happy am I, for the daughters have called me happy (Genesis 30:13), therefore he adds to say that also among sons he shall be blessed and happy, for both son and daughter — all will call him happy and bless him. Regarding what it says “and as your days, your strength.” It alludes to what our Sages of blessed memory said (Chullin 24b): “The oil with which my mother anointed me in my youth, is what sustained me in my old age.” Therefore it says here and dips his foot in oil, and through the oil he will be strong and healthy in his old age just as in his youth. This is what is meant by and as your days, your strength. And according to those who say that Asher was blessed with many children because he fulfilled the commandment to be fruitful and multiply both in his youth and in his old age, as it is written In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening (Ecclesiastes 11:6)… This is what is meant by and as your days, your strength, and as Rashi explained, it comes to equate the days of old age with the days of youth.

Rav Ephraim Greenblatt (המנהג לברך הילדים בליל שבת)

Revavos Ephraim 5:195

The passage examines the source of the custom to bless children before Kiddush on Friday night, concluding that the older practice is kissing the parents’ hands—especially the mother’s—and that the blessings likely developed alongside this custom, while also citing the blessing “Yesimcha” at circumcision and noting the omission of mothers’ names in the children’s blessings.

Kook interprets “and bless Your people Israel with sons and daughters” as a national blessing that children receive God’s spirit, remain loyal to Israel, and devote their material and spiritual efforts to the welfare of the Jewish people rather than tending foreign vineyards instead of God’s vineyard, the House of Israel.
