Psalms 27

Psalms 27:4

The psalm moves from confidence in God's protection to a plea for concealment from enemies, then centers on the single desire to dwell near God and behold His goodness. It concludes with the repeated exhortation to hope in God, making it especially apt for a season of fear, judgment, prayer, and renewed trust.

One thing I ask of GOD, only that do I seek: to live in GOD’s house all the days of my life, to gaze upon GOD’s beauty, to frequent the temple.

Midrash Tehillim 27

Midrash Tehillim 27:3

The midrash interprets Psalm 27's language of light, salvation, enemies, and seeking God's face through biblical and theological associations. It is a direct classical source for the psalm's spiritual meanings and for understanding its movement between danger and confidence.

...Another explanation. 'The LORD is my light and my help...' My light by the sea, as it says "...and it lit up the night..." (Exodus 14:20) And my help by the sea, as it says "...Stand by, and witness the deliverance which the LORD will work for you..." (ibid. v. 13) Whom should I fear? "But Moses said to the people, “Have no fear!" (ibid.) The LORD is the stronghold of my life, "The LORD is my strength and might..." (Exodus 15:2) Whom should I dread? "Terror and dread descend upon them..." (ibid. v. 16) When evil men assail me, "As Pharaoh drew near..." (Exodus 14:10) To devour my flesh, "...My desire shall have its fill of them..." (Exodus 15:9) R' Shmuel bar Nachmani said: the wicked do not leave this world until they announce their own verdict upon themselves. This is what is written "I will pursue, I will overtake" (ibid.) It does not then say 'we will divide' but rather "I will divide the spoil" (ibid.) I will be divided. It is they, my foes and my enemies, who stumble and fall, "Who hurled Pharaoh and his army into the Sea of Reeds..." (Psalms 136:15) From here forward Israel said 'Should an army besiege me...' meaning the army of Egypt, '...my heart would have no fear.' 'should war beset me, because of this would I be confident.' 'This' always refers to Torah, as it says "This is the Teaching..." (Deuteronomy 4:44) The rabbis explained this verse as referring to Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. 'my light,' on Rosh Hashanah. 'And my help ,' on Yom Kippur. 'When evil men assail me,' this refers to the idolaters. 'To devour my flesh,' when they come to accuse Israel and say before the Holy One: these (meaning themselves) are idolaters and those (meaning Israel) are idolaters as well! 'my foes and my enemies,' the numerical value of the letters of hasatan (the accuser) is 364. Every day of the year he has the authority to make accusations, except on Yom Kippur (and Rosh Hashanah). For this reason Israel said 'Should an army besiege me,' meaning the idolatrous nations, 'my heart would have no fear.' 'Should war beset me, because of this would I be confident,' R' Levi said: because of the bequest which you wrote in the Torah "Thus only shall Aaron enter the Shrine..." (Vayikra 16:3)

Radak on Psalms 27:4

Radak interprets David's desire to dwell in God's house as a longing for sustained worship and contemplation of divine goodness. This makes the verse a natural expression of the month of Elul's emphasis on drawing near to God.

Yalkut Shimoni on Nach 754:2

According to this interpretation, Moses ascended the mountain on the first of Elul and a shofar blast was sounded in the camp to prevent the people from sinning with idols; the Sages therefore instituted that the shofar be sounded on the first of Elul each year.

The passage notes that the letters of "Elul" appear in certain words of Tehillim 27, and explains that for this reason the custom arose to recite selichot beginning from Rosh Chodesh Elul onward; it also identifies the word "lulei" (unless) in the phrase "lulei he'emantiראית baTov Hashem" as containing the letters of Elul, and connects this to the continuation "me'Elul ve'ilach charadti neged Hashem.

Shenei Luchot HaBerit, Aseret HaDibrot, Rosh HaShanah, Ner Mitzva

The months of Elul and the Ten Days of Repentance are specifically designated for repentance over transgressions committed throughout the year, so that one enters Rosh Hashanah (the Day of Judgment) purified rather than despised for one's sins; these days are judgment days on which the King's judgment is pronounced, and the Holy One is prepared to accept those who repent, as the Sages derive from "Seek the Lord while He may be found"—these being times when He is uniquely accessible even to individuals who should therefore fast, examine their deeds, and fulfill the principles of repentance with full heart through fasting, weeping, and lamentation, especially at night.

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh 128:1

Rabbi Isaac Luria wrote that the acrostic of certain biblical verses spells Elul, indicating that this month is a time of divine favor for repentance from sins committed throughout the year and even for unintentional transgressions, and other interpreters of textual signs similarly identified acrostics of Elul in other verses.

[The days] from Rosh Chodesh Elul until after Yom Kippur, are days of Divine favor [and acceptance.] Even though throughout the entire year the Holy One, blessed is He, accepts the repentance of those who return to Him wholeheartedly, nevertheless, these days are unexcelled and most suitable for repentance, because they are days of mercy and favor. On Rosh Chodesh Elul, Moshe went up Mount Sinai to receive the Second Tablets; he remained there for forty days, and came down on the tenth day of Tishrei when the atonement was completed. From then on these days have been designated as days of Divine favor [and acceptance,] and the tenth day of Tishrei as Yom Kippur [Day of Atonement]. In most communities it is the custom to fast on the day before Rosh Chodesh Elul and to recite the prayers of Yom Kippur Katan [minor Yom Kippur], in order to be spiritually prepared for repentance. If Rosh Chodesh occurs on Shabbos, Yom Kippur Katan is held on the preceding Thursday. The Ari (Rabbi Yitzchak Luria), of blessed memory, wrote, "If he did not lie in ambush but Hashem made it happen, then I will provide …" (Exodus 21:13) The initials of the words [ina le'yado vesamti lecha] form the acronym Elul, to indicate that this month is a favorable time for repentance to be accepted for the sins committed during the entire year. It also alludes to the fact that sins done inadvertently also require repentance during this month. The interpreters of allusions also commented: It is written (Deuteronomy 30:6) "And Hashem your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your children;" the initials of the words [es levavecho ve'es levav] form the acronym Elul. Also, the initials of Ani ledodi vedodi li, ["I am my Beloved's and my Beloved is mine,"] [Song of Songs 6:3] form the acronym Elul. Also, the initials of Ish lerei'eihu umatanos la'evyonim ["One to another and gifts to the poor"] (Esther 9:22) form the acronym Elul. These acronyms are an allusion to three things: Repentance, Prayer and Charity which must be practiced zealously during this month. "Hashem will circumcise etc." alludes to repentance, "I am my Beloved's etc." alludes to prayer, for prayer is the song of love. "One to another and gifts to the poor," alludes to charity.

Elul functions as a spiritual city of refuge where any Jew can achieve atonement and repentance through teshuvah and Torah study, accessible everywhere regardless of one's circumstances, enabling complete spiritual transformation and protection from negative influences.

In this sichaThe passage explains that the month of Elul serves as a spiritual 'City of Refuge' (Ir Miklat) where any Jew can find safety and achieve atonement through repentance (Teshuvah) and Torah study. While physical cities of refuge only functioned in the Land of Israel, the spiritual refuge of Elul is accessible everywhere, even to those involved in worldly affairs or those already dedicated to full-time study. This period enables a complete spiritual transformation, shielding a person from negative influences and facilitating a sincere return to God.

This passage explains that Psalm 27 (Shir HaMaalot miMaamkim) is appointed to be recited throughout the Ten Days of Repentance beginning from Rosh Hashanah, and it interprets "from the depths" according to two views in the Zohar—Rabbi Yitzhak understanding it as the depths of the human soul and Rabbi Abba as depths from above—with the passage reconciling both views through the framework of teshuvah (repentance).

Orot HaTeshuvah

Rav Kook describes teshuvah as a profound return to one's source and to a more elevated relationship with God, not merely regret over wrongdoing. This provides a modern conceptual frame for Psalm 27's repeated seeking of God's face.

(2) There is Teshuvah which is directed to counteract a particular sin or many sins. A person puts their sin before their face, regrets it and suffers over having been ensnared in the trap of sin. One's soul climbs and ascends until one becomes free from the enslavement to sin and feels within oneself the holy freedom which is so pleasant to the soul and aura that one becomes increasingly healed. The rays of the light of the sun of Hesed, Supernal Compassion, send out their beams, and a person becomes increasingly happy, and increasingly filled with internal pleasure and delight. This is along with heartbrokenness and a soul swimming in sadness, since even this feeling is beneficial for the person in accord with their situation and can add more internal spiritual pleasure and true wholeness. A person feels themself drawing closer to the Source of Life, to the Living G-d in a way that has not been the case before when they were so far away from G-d. The person's longing soul remembers with heartfelt joy the internal suffering of before and is filled with feelings of gratitude, with thanksgiving and song the soul raises her voice saying " Bless GOD, O my soul, all my being, that holy name. Bless the ETERNAL One, O my soul, and do not forget all God’s bounties. All your sins are forgiven, all your diseases healed. Your life is redeemed from the Pit." You are surrounded with steadfast love and mercy. You are satisfied with good things in the prime of life, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. GOD executes righteous acts and judgments for all who are wronged" (Psalm 103:1-6).

Tzitz Eliezer 21:15

This passage presents a Rosh Hashanah discourse explaining that the shofar of ram's horn (specifically) is sounded so that we recall the Binding of Isaac and thereby contemplate the depths of love and fear of God we should reach, and through good intention God considers our contemplation as though we ourselves were bound like Isaac, drawing on sources including the Meiri, Pesikta de-Rav Kahana, and midrashic interpretations of Psalm 81 to connect shofar-blowing to spiritual renewal and acceptance of Torah.

B'Mareh HaBazak Volume IV 8:8

The later authorities record a custom to recite the psalm "Ledor'u Ori V'Yishi" in the morning and evening without specifying the definition of "evening," and some have written that it is preferable to recite this psalm after the Mincha prayer to avoid the issue of reciting Psalms at night, though in many places the custom has already been established to recite it after the evening prayer, and therefore the existing custom should not be changed.
