What is the significance of the menorah's lighting pattern — three candles on each side angled toward the central one — and why does the Torah immediately add the seemingly disconnected detail that the menorah was made "מקשה אחת" (a single hammered piece)?

Sforno on Numbers 8:2

Q — What is the significance of the menorah's lighting pattern — three candles on each side angled toward the central one — and why does the Torah immediately add the seemingly disconnected detail that the menorah was made "מקשה אחת" (a single hammered piece)?

A — For Sforno both details encode the same idea: Klal Yisrael's structural unity around a single תכלית. The three right candles symbolize "העוסקים בחיי עולם" — Torah scholars, whose work is the eternal. The three left, "העוסקים בחיי שעה העוזרים למימינים" — those whose work sustains the scholars, the laborers and tradespeople. Both groups, says the chiddush, must aim their light toward the central Sforno cites Chullin 92a — "אלמלי עלייא לא מתקיימי אתכליא" (without the leaves the clusters can't survive) — without the simple supporters, the scholars couldn't exist either. And the מקשה אחת construction makes the same point through form: the menorah is *one piece*, not parts welded together — "להורות האחדות המכוון לתכלית אחד בעצמו." The proof-text is Mattan Torah: "ויענו כל העם יחדו ויאמרו כל אשר דבר ה' נעשה" — "בין כולנו נשלים כונתו."
