Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Mishpatim 12

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Mishpatim 12:1

The passage describes how God sent hornets before Israel to destroy the Amorites, and records three rabbinic explanations of how the hornets killed them: by injecting venom into their eyes (R. Levi), by causing a plague that led to diarrhea (R. Hiyya bar Abba), or by being bound before Israel so they could be killed (R. Berekhyah).

(Exod. 23:21, cont.:) FOR MY NAME IS WITH HIM. The name of the Holy One is associated with each and every angel. Moses said to him: I do not want an angel to go with us. He said to him: If you <yourself > do not go with us, we are not moving from our place. The Holy One said to him: By your life, even though I will not send an angel before you, I will send the hornet before you, as stated (in Exod. 23:28): I WILL SEND THE HORNET < BEFORE YOU TO DRIVE OUT THE HEVITES, THE CANAANITES, AND THE HITTITES FROM BEFORE YOU>. How did the Amorites die? R. Levi said: He wedded two hornets to each and every one <of them>. Then when each and every hornet poured out its venom right into <an Amorite's> eyes, he died immediately. R. Hiyya bar Abba said: How did they die? A poison entered them, they {became saturated} [contracted diarrhea], and they died in the presence of Israel. R. Berekhyah said: The Holy One bound them before Israel. Then they came and killed them, as stated (in Deut. 3:3): SO THE LORD OUR GOD GAVE OG, KING OF BASHAN, INTO OUR HANDS…. <The Holy One acted> like someone who binds his child's enemy and sets him before his child. In case you say the Amorites were small, the Holy One exalts them (in Amos 2:9): [YET I DESTROYED THE AMORITES BEFORE THEM,] WHOSE STATURE WAS LIKE THE CEDARS IN HEIGHT. And what did I do to them? (Ibid., cont.:) I DESTROYED THEIR FRUIT ABOVE, i.e., their prince; AND THEIR ROOTS BELOW, i.e., the <rest of the> Amorites. The Holy One said: In this world I sent an angel before them, and he destroyed the peoples of the world; but in the world to come, I am sending you Elijah, may his memory be blessed. It is so stated (in Mal. 3:24 [4:5]): LO, I AM SENDING YOU THE PROPHET ELIJAH BEFORE THE COMING OF THE GREAT AND AWESOME DAY OF THE LORD.

Shabbat 74b:7

Shabbat 74b:7

The Rabbis teach that one who tears off, cuts off, or plucks out a wing incurs three separate sin-offerings, and Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish explains that tearing corresponds to the prohibition of shearing, cutting to the prohibition of cutting, and plucking to the prohibition of erasing.

Radak on Genesis 7:14

Radak on Genesis 7:14

The term "all winged creature" serves as a general category for all flying beings, further specified as "all bird" for larger birds (both pure and impure), and then further detailed as "all wing" to include even small flying insects such as locusts, hornets, flies, and similar creatures, with "all wing" meaning either any winged creature or functioning as a descriptive term.

Ibn Ezra on Deuteronomy 1:44

Ibn Ezra comments on the comparison to bees and the course of the battle, focusing on the plain meaning of the verse and the identity of the Amorite attackers.

AS BEES DO. For they immediately chase after and bite whoever touches their abode.

Nishmat Shabbat vol 7:49

The passage discusses whether it is forbidden to remove a wing or leg from a fly on Shabbat, citing an opinion that one who tears off a fly's wing or leg incurs liability under the category of reaping (קוצר).

On this pageThe author analyzes whether removing a wing or leg from a fly on Shabbat is forbidden. While referencing opinions that consider it a Torah-level violation under the categories of reaping (קוצר) or shearing (גוזז), he concludes that, at the very least, it is definitely prohibited by Rabbinic law.

Rav Eliezer Melamed (Peninei Halakhah, Kashrut 17:8)

Peninei Halakhah, Kashrut 17:8

Within the category of permitted locust-like creatures, those with three pairs of legs and wings are generally forbidden to eat, including wasps, bees, flies, and grasshoppers, though among locusts specifically some species are permitted; the Sages added by tradition that permitted locusts must have four wings and wings that cover most of their body.
