Kedushat Levi, Numbers, Homily for Shavuot
According to the Ramban's interpretation of the verse "Why do you stir up and awaken love until it pleases," when a person experiences a sudden awakening of fear and love toward the Creator, he must immediately perform a mitzvah (such as giving charity or beginning to study) to clothe that awakening in a physical deed, thereby providing it with strengthening and foundation so it will not dissipate, for such an awakening is a light that flows down from above and needs embodiment in the physical body to sustain it.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 41:22
The chapter explains avodah through awe and love, emphasizing meditation and concrete practice as pathways to arousing genuine emotional attachment. It supports the view that action and disciplined practice can generate inner love.
But the union of the soul with, and its absorption into, the light of G–d, making them one, this is what every member of Israel desires in very truth, utterly, with all his heart and all his soul, because of the natural love that is hidden in every Jewish heart to cleave to G–d and not, under any circumstances, to be parted or sundered or separated, G–d forbid, from His Unity and Oneness, blessed be He, even at the cost of his very life. This kavanah is genuinely and truly sincere in every Jewish soul at every season and every hour, by virtue of the natural love which is a heritage bequeathed to us from our ancestors. Nevertheless, one needs to establish set periods for reflecting on the greatness of G–d in order to attain intelligent fear and love, and with all that, perhaps one may succeed, as has been stated previously.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 32:2
The Alter Rebbe grounds ahavat Yisrael in seeing the other as an extension of oneself, and makes practical acts of chesed central to revealing that unity. This chapter is especially relevant to the notion that loving action both expresses and uncovers love.
For, whereas one despises and loathes one’s body, while as for the soul and spirit, who can know their greatness and excellence in their root and source in the living G–d? Being, moreover, all of a kind and all having one Father—therefore, all Israelites are called real brothers by virtue of the source of their souls in the One G–d; only the bodies are separated. Hence in the case of those who give major consideration to their bodies while regarding their souls as of secondary importance, there can be no true love and brotherhood among them, but only [a love] which is dependent on a [transitory] thing. But as for the person who is not one’s colleague and is not on intimate terms with him, Hillel the Elder said, “Be of the disciples of Aaron, loving peace and pursuing peace, loving the creatures and drawing them near to the Torah.” This means that even in the case of those who are removed from G–d’s Torah and His service and are therefore classified simply as “creatures,” one must attract them with strong cords of love, perchance one might succeed in drawing them near to the Torah and Divine service. Even if one fails, one has not forfeited the merit of the precept of neighborly love.

The one who serves from love, like Avraham, is drawn in heart and innards to do his Creator's will until all his limbs are naturally drawn to do their Creator's will; however, since God's actual will was not to slaughter Yitzchak, Avraham's heart did not experience cleaving and love through this act because God's will was not truly so, which is why it was a test.

Just as a face's image in water reflects that same face back, so too does the faithful love of one person for another awaken reciprocal love in the other's heart, especially when that person perceives the love directed toward them.

A love that depends on nothing external does not cease across worlds; therefore the love of the Jewish people for the Creator with all their heart and soul—to give everything for God—is by nature independent of any thing, and thus the commandment to love with all one's soul is fulfilled when one surrenders the soul and all one's strength for Him, thereby removing all obstacles and then it is true testimony.

The first level of spirituality that remained below in the lower Garden of Eden in its original place and rank spreads among the disciples of a tzaddik, each according to the measure of their attachment and closeness to him in his life and death through great love, for all drawing down of spirituality comes only through great love—as the Zohar states that the spirit of will of the heart draws down spirit from above—but only if one prepares himself to meet his God with great preparation and mighty effort in order to receive these three qualities in the manner his teacher taught him.
