Chassidic Teachings on Elul and Repentance

Sources exploring the spiritual significance of the month of Elul through Chassidic and classical Jewish thought, emphasizing teshuvah (repentance) as a return to God, divine closeness, and the preparatory work of the High Holy Days.

What the sources say

The foundational theme of Elul across these sources is that the month carries a uniquely receptive quality of divine favor: the Chayei Adam (138:1) grounds this in the historical precedent of Moshe ascending Har Sinai on Rosh Chodesh Elul to receive the second Tablets and remaining there forty days until Yom Kippur, establishing these as enduring days of divine acceptance, while the Sefat Emet (Devarim, Elul 3:2) explains that Elul, as the month preceding the new year, constitutes an עת רצון not because of any change in the Divine but because time itself becomes capable of receiving the divine will and overflow from the transcendent source.

The verse from Shir HaShirim 6:3, אֲנִי לְדוֹדִי וְדוֹדִי לִי, is read by the Hasidic sources as the central emblem of Elul's reciprocal love: the Mishnah Berurah (581:1) cites it as the classical scriptural allusion — its initials spelling אלול — signifying that when the heart draws near to its Beloved in teshuvah, the Beloved draws correspondingly near, and the Shem MiShmuel (Mishpatim 10:14) develops this into a full Kabbalistic principle that in Elul the thirteen attributes of mercy are opened to Israel, kindling a reciprocal awakening of love from below.

The Hasidic sources read the month's spiritual structure through the sefirotic map: the Shem MiShmuel (Shoftim 6:19) identifies Elul as the sixth month, aligned with the attribute of Yesod which extends to Da'at, and teaches that during Elul the blemish of the covenant is rectified and clarity of mind is restored — itself the great preparation for Rosh Hashanah — while the Bnei Yissaschar (Elul 1:1) demonstrates through gematria and letter combinations that the month's divine Name and its root verses encode both teshuvah and the sweetening of the harsh judgments of Tammuz and Av, as well as the twin qualities of love and awe associated with Avraham and Yitzchak.

The shofar blown throughout Elul is understood by these sources not merely as a legal institution but as the essential vessel for the month's spiritual illumination: the Tur (Orach Chayim 581) records that the Sages instituted the daily blowing from Rosh Chodesh Elul in every generation to arouse Israel to teshuvah — anchored in the original blowing when Moshe ascended the mountain — and the Shem MiShmuel (Mishpatim 10:14) explains that every supernal illumination descending from above requires a physical vessel to contain it, and the shofar of Elul is precisely that vessel for the light of the thirteen attributes.

The Hasidic reading of teshuvah in Elul is not merely legal regret but an interior renewal: the Shem MiShmuel (Rosh Hashanah 19:9) expounds the Midrash's call to renew one's deeds through the shofar as requiring each person to see himself as if born anew today, severing connection to prior sins so that God in His great mercy removes those sins and casts them into the depths of the sea, and Likutei Moharan (6:10) extends this into a full Kabbalistic contemplation, identifying the general kavanot of Elul with the verse "Who makes a way through the sea" (Yeshayahu 43:16), the task being to illuminate the aspect of "way" — corresponding numerically to twice the Name Yabok and to the two Names KaSA and SaG — into the "sea."

The practical customs that give structure to the month in halacha reflect the same spiritual priorities: the Mateh Efrayim (581:10) prescribes daily self-examination before meals and sleep, confession and regret, renewed vigor in mitzvot, and the widespread custom of checking one's tefillin and mezuzot during Elul as an expression of heightened conscientiousness, while the Mishnah Berurah (581:2) records the Ashkenazic custom of reciting Psalm 27 — לְדָוִד ה' אוֹרִי — morning and evening throughout the entire period from Rosh Chodesh Elul through Shemini Atzeret.

The Peri Tzadik (Rosh Chodesh Elul 3:4) notes the Arizal's alignment of Elul with the tribe of Gad and connects the month's inner dimension to the figure of Eliyahu HaNavi, who will reveal all of the Oral Torah that can be revealed in this world — linking Elul's restorative power to the ultimate disclosure of hidden teaching.

Likkutei Sichos (2, Devarim Elul) addresses, on our reading of the cited page, how the spiritual descent of exile and the destruction of the Temple is ultimately a necessary preparation — through the parable of a teacher who withdraws to allow a student to receive a profound new concept — for the drawing down of the supreme, eternal light of the future Redemption.

The broader ethical and philosophical ground for this month of return is laid by the classic voices of teshuvah literature: the Sha'arei Teshuvah (1:10) describes the first and foundational element of teshuvah as heartfelt regret — understanding that abandoning God is bitter and evil, that punishment follows sin, and asking oneself "what have I done?" — while the Mishneh Torah, Repentance (2:6) rules that though teshuvah is always beneficial, it is most excellent and immediately accepted during the ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, deriving this from Yeshayahu 55:6, "Seek God while He can be found, call upon Him while He is near."

Isaiah 55:6

The prophetic call to seek God—"Seek the Lord while He may be found"—is a foundational text for Elul's recurring themes of teshuvah, divine availability, and spiritual preparation.

Seek GOD while you can, Call out while [God] is near.

Mishneh Torah, Repentance 3:4

Mishneh Torah, Repentance 3:4

Rambam presents shofar as a symbolic wake-up call: it says, in effect, awaken sleepers from spiritual slumber and examine your deeds. This is directly relevant to Elul's preparatory ethos.

Mishnah Berurah 581:2

In the custom of the author's region, from the first of Elul until Yom Kippur, Psalm 27 ("L'David Hashem ori") is recited daily after the completion of each prayer service morning and evening, followed by Kaddish, and this practice extends through Shemini Atzeret inclusive; on days with a Mussaf service, Psalm 27 is said after the morning prayer and after the afternoon prayer, and in places where it is recited after the completion of the morning prayer on Rosh Chodesh, the Psalm "Barchi nafshi" should be said first, as should the daily psalm when it is customary to recite it after the morning prayer.

The Ari Hakadosh corresponded the twelve months to the twelve tribes, assigning Elul to the tribe of Gad, based on a teaching in Bereishit Rabbah that Gad will be the one to cut through the foundations of the Other Side, identified as Elijah; this month corresponds to a soul that will reveal all the hidden interpretations possible in the world, as indicated by the teaching that Elijah is destined to expound this portion, and the acronym Tishbi refers to one who will resolve difficulties and complexities.

Tomer Devorah 1

Tomer Devorah 1:1

The opening chapter develops the imitation of God's thirteen attributes of mercy, providing a practical model of mercy and character refinement suitable for Elul preparation.

Chapter 1 - That it is fitting for a person to resemble his Creator: It is fitting for a person to resemble his Creator and then he will be [configured] in the secret of the Highest Form, [both] in image and likeness. As if he is alike in his body but not in his actions, he betrays the Form; and they will say about him, "A lovely form, but ugly deeds." As behold, the essence of the Highest Image and Likeness is His actions. And what will it benefit him to have the structure of his limbs like the Highest Form, but not resemble his Creator in his actions? Therefore it is fitting that he should [make his actions] resemble the actions of the Crown (Keter), which are the thirteen highest traits of mercy. And they are hinted to in the secret of the verses (Michah 7:18-20), "Who is a power like You; He will again have mercy on us; You shall give truth." If so, it is fitting that these thirteen traits [also] be found in man. And now we will explain these thirteen actions that are fitting to be with him.

This is the hidden meaning of the kavanot (meditations) of Elul. I heard a little about this [from Rebbe Nachman], but it was only like a drop in the sea. Study the meditations of Elul, where it is explained that the general kavanot of Elul are [based on the verse] (Isaiah 43:16), “… Who makes a way through the sea.” For one must take the aspect of “way” and shine it into the “sea.” This derekh (way) is the aspect of two times the Holy Name Yabok, because twice Yabok equals derekh. This proceeds from the aspect of two Holy Names, KaSA [and] SaG. For these two names, KaSA and SaG, have a numerical value equal to two times Yabok, which is the numerical value of derekh. 11. And now! come see and understand how, in a fantastically awesome manner, all the above kavanot are hinted at and concealed in the above Torah lesson. For there it is explained that a person who wants to repent must have two types of expertise: at running and at returning. This is the aspect of ascending and descending, corresponding to “If I ascend to heaven, You are there”—the expertise of running; “and if I make my bed in Hell, here You are”—the expertise of returning. See above, where this is explained. 12. Based on Kabbalistic teaching we know that concealed in this is the hidden meaning of the kavanot of Elul. For baky is the aspect of the above mentioned Holy Name YaBoK, which has the same letters as BaKY. When a person attains the two types of expertise mentioned earlier, which is twice baky —i.e., baky b’ratzo (running) and baky b’shov (returning)—he also attains the derekh (way) of repentance. This is because twice baky, which is the aspect of twice the Holy Name Yabok, is equal to the numerical value of derekh. For by following the method of the kavanot, this derekh is made from the segol of KaSA and the chirik of SaG, which [also] have the numerical value of twice Yabok.

Shem MiShmuel, Mishpatim 10:14

In Elul, thirteen channels of divine mercy open to Israel as face-to-face illumination that awakens love in the Jewish heart to prepare themselves for service in the seventh month; though the verse states "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine," every illumination from above requires a vessel of mitzvah to contain it, and if one does not prepare the vessel the illumination departs as it came, which is why the shofar is sounded in Elul as a receptacle for this illumination—and similarly in Adar before Nissan, when Nissan is the time Israel makes lower arousal through their service (as written regarding the paschal service), the sages ordained that the new month brings an offering from new produce, for it is a time of renewal of service; just as in Elul upper arousal comes to stir hearts to prepare for Tishrei, so too in Adar upper arousal comes and the beloved's voice knocks upon the strings of Israel's heart to awaken

Bnei Yissaschar, Elul 1:1

Bnei Yissaschar, Elul 1:1

The passage presents mystical letter-combinations (tzirufim) of the Divine Name associated with Elul, interpreting the words "ve-tzedek tehi'ah lanu ki" as an acrostic and numerical equivalent pointing to repentance as the work of this month, notes that the harsh judgments of Tammuz are sweetened in Elul, emphasizes that one who repents must be especially careful to speak truthfully, and derives further hints from the acrostics and gematrias of these words alluding to Abraham and Isaac representing love and fear of God.

Sefat Emet, Deuteronomy, For the Month of Elul 3:2

During the afternoon of Shabbat and similarly in the month of Elul, there are times of favor; though the Holy One is changeless and transcends time, the change occurs in time itself—specifically, certain times possess the capacity to receive divine will and abundance from that which transcends time, and on Shabbat this happens because influence from the Divine radiates to all days of the week, connecting time with that which is above it, and likewise in Elul before the renewal of the new year, when it is a time of favor in which one can attach oneself even in this world to that which is above, as expressed in "my prayer is for a time of favor.

Shem MiShmuel, Shoftim 6:19

Elul corresponds to the sefirah of Yesod, which rises to Daat; just as the sages indicated that only Daat is subject to impairment, and truly nothing confuses the mind like a covenant-blemish, and it is known from Kabbalistic sources that Elul rectifies a covenant-blemish, and through this rectification one merits settling of the mind, which serves as preparation for Rosh Hashanah, whereby Israel overcomes judgment.

Shem MiShmuel, Rosh Hashanah 19:9

The midrash interprets "sound the shofar in the month, renew your deeds in the month, improve your deeds in the month" to mean that renewal of deeds consists of each person regarding himself as if he were born today (as in "You are My son, today I have begotten you"), forgetting the past and not bringing it to mind, and just as he separates and distances himself from sins, so too the Holy One in His abundant mercy removes the sins from him and casts them into the depths of the sea.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 31:9

A person may console himself by recognizing that although his individual self is distant from God and despicable, within him there exists a divine soul—a genuine spark of divinity clothed within it—which is in exile; therefore his divine soul's exile is even greater and calls for greater mercy, and he should direct all his intention and desire toward elevating and redeeming this divine soul from its exile, returning it to its Father's house as it was before it became clothed in his body.

Likkutei Sichos 2, Devarim Elul

The passage explains that the future Redemption, being a complete and true redemption with no exile following it, will certainly create an entirely new light and new essence in which exile has no place whatsoever.

In this sichaThe sicha explains that the spiritual descent of exile and the destruction of the Temple is ultimately a necessary preparation for a greater ascent. Through the parable of a teacher who temporarily withdraws to prepare a student to receive a profound new concept, the Rebbe illustrates how the darkness of exile facilitates the drawing down of the supreme, eternal light of the future Redemption.

Orot HaTeshuvah

Orot HaTeshuvah

Repentance operates at a deeper level through natural spiritual and psychological conscience—termed "mussar of the kidneys"—wherein the human soul's inherent inclination toward righteousness causes pain and distress when it has strayed into sin, motivating it to return and correct its transgression until it senses the sin has been erased, though this aspect of repentance is complex, dependent on many internal and external conditions, contains potential pitfalls to avoid, yet remains a foundational element upon which the substance of repentance rests.

Nitei Gavriel, Rosh Hashana, perek 6

During Elul until Yom Kippur, when writing a letter to another person, it is fitting to hint at the beginning or end of the letter that the recipient will merit a good inscription and signing in the coming days.

On this pageThis chapter outlines several customs observed during the month of Elul leading up to Yom Kippur. These include writing a blessing for a good year in one's letters, having one's tefillin and mezuzot checked, and focusing on prayers for the repentance and return of those who have strayed from the Torah. Additionally, it states that conducting rabbinical court cases (din Torah) is permitted during this month. The text outlines several practices for the month of Elul and the High Holiday period (Chapter 6, sections 5–8): undertaking a 'fast of speech' (avoiding idle chatter) from Rosh Chodesh Elul until Yom Kippur; fasting on the 17th of Elul (the day the spies died); and refraining from eating nuts from the start of Selichot until Hoshana Rabbah. The text outlines customs for the month of Elul, detailing that walnuts are permitted in cooked or baked dishes if their taste is nullified, though some remain strict until Hoshana Rabbah. It also notes the practices of increasing charity, studying Tikunei Zohar and Tomer Devorah, and avoiding moving into a new home within thirty days of Sukkot (starting from the 15th of Elul).
