This topic examines the halakhic parameters for lighting Shabbat candles, including how early one may light before Shabbat begins and the relationship between early lighting and the acceptance of Shabbat. Sources range from Talmudic discussions through medieval and modern codes, addressing the balance between lighting sufficiently early for practical purposes and avoiding lighting so early that the candles burn down before nightfall.

What the sources say
The earliest boundary for lighting Shabbat candles is set at plag haminchah, one and a quarter seasonal hours before nightfall, as stated by Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 263:4 and explained by Beit Yosef, Orach Chayim 263:3, who trace this to the position that one may accept Shabbat immediately upon lighting from that time onward.
The underlying concern is that lighting too early, while there is still much daylight, does not visibly mark the candles as being for the sake of Shabbat, a point made already by Tur, Orach Chayim 263 and echoed in Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 263:4, with Mishnah Berurah 263:15 clarifying that this refers to a time well before the onset of tosefet Shabbat.
This same balance between not lighting too early and not lighting too late is rooted in the Gemara's account of Rav Yosef's wife, who was told that lighting slightly before nightfall (rather than very early) fulfills the requirement neither to anticipate nor to delay (Shabbat 23b:5), a reading confirmed by Rashi on Shabbat 23b:5.
Contemporary treatments extend this into practical guidance: Nishmat Shabbat vol 1:214 records that ideal practice is to light about 15–20 minutes before sunset, with some communities lighting 25–30 minutes before and Jerusalem custom lighting 40 minutes before, while Nishmat Shabbat vol 1:363 explains that since lighting occurs at the start of the accepted plag haminchah period, Shabbat must be accepted with the lighting or shortly thereafter.
Igros Moshe OC 2:6 addresses the common practice of lighting eighteen minutes before sunset, explaining that this custom is not necessarily grounded in the stringent view that Shabbat begins three-quarters of a mil before sunset, since many places light only about ten minutes before sunset, while nevertheless permitting and praising those who follow the more stringent reckoning.
Revavos Ephraim 8:123 addresses a case at the opposite end of the question, where a woman failed to light until after sunset, ruling that despite an already-burning electric light she should add a candle because of her negligent delay, which underscores that the halachic window has an early boundary at plag haminchah but is bounded on the late side as well.

Shabbat 23b
Shabbat 23b:5
Discusses the mitzvah of Shabbat lights and the blessings associated with kindling, supplying an important Talmudic basis for the practice even though the exact earliest time is clarified elsewhere.
The Gemara relates that Rav Yosef’s wife would kindle the Shabbat lights late. Rav Yosef said to her: Wasn’t it taught in a baraita with regard to the verse: “The pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night, departed not from before the people” (Exodus 13:22), this teaches that the pillar of cloud would overlap with the pillar of fire? The pillar of fire would appear slightly before nightfall. And the pillar of fire would overlap with the pillar of cloud, as well. The pillar of cloud would appear slightly before daybreak. Therefore, in lighting the Shabbat lights it is also appropriate to light earlier, beginning Shabbat slightly before dark on Shabbat eve. She thought to kindle the lights much earlier, on Shabbat eve, long before nightfall. An Elder said to her, we learned: As long as he neither lights too early nor too late.
The passage discusses adding time from the weekday to the sanctity of Shabbat, including cases of praying the Friday-night prayer before nightfall and differing practices regarding whether one may pray after going to bed.
Chachmei Hamidrash recount that on the first Shabbat, light began shining after the sun set and continued for thirty-six hours: twelve on Friday evening, twelve during Shabbat night, and twelve during the day of Shabbat.
Chachmei Bavel state that one may pray the Shabbat prayer before nightfall on Friday and recite kiddush over a cup of wine, and that the halakha follows this ruling.
With regard to Rabbi Yirmeya’s conduct, the Gemara explains that Rabbi Yirmeya bar Abba is different, as he was not a mere student of Rav. Rather, he was a disciple-colleague and was, therefore, permitted to act that way. And that is why on one occasion, when Rav prayed the Shabbat prayer early, Rabbi Yirmeya bar Abba asked him: Did you distance yourself from labor and accept the sanctity of Shabbat? Rav said to him: Yes, I distanced myself. And Rabbi Yirmeya did not say to him: Did the Master distance himself, as would have been appropriate had he merely been Rav’s student. The Gemara continues to discuss the possibility of reciting the evening prayer early, even on Shabbat. Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Avin said: Rav prayed the Shabbat prayer on the eve of Shabbat before nightfall. Rabbi Yoshiya would pray the evening prayer of the conclusion of Shabbat on Shabbat. With regard to the fact that Rav prayed the Shabbat prayer on the eve of Shabbat before nightfall, the dilemma is raised: In those cases, did he recite kiddush over the cup of wine, or did he not recite kiddush over the cup of wine before the stars emerged? Come and hear a resolution to this, as Rav Naḥman said that Shmuel said: One prays the Shabbat prayer on the eve of Shabbat before nightfall and recites kiddush over the cup of wine. And the halakha is in accordance with his ruling.
Chachmei Bavel derive from the verses concerning Yom Kippur that one begins observing the sanctity of the day while it is still daytime and extends it afterward, and that this addition from weekday to sacred time applies to Festivals and Shabbatot as well.
The Gemara answers: He requires this verse of “keep your Shabbat” for that which was taught in a baraita: The verse states: “And you shall afflict your souls on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening until evening, you shall rest on your Shabbat” (Leviticus 23:32). One might have thought that one should start to afflict oneself on the ninth of Tishrei; therefore, the verse states “at evening.” If the Torah had stated only “at evening,” one might have thought that the fast starts only when darkness falls; therefore, the verse states “on the ninth,” implying that one begins to fast on the ninth of Tishrei. How can these verses be reconciled? One begins to fast while it is still daytime; from here it is derived that one sanctifies and extends from the non-sacred weekday to the sacred day of Yom Kippur. I have derived only that one must add time at the beginning of Yom Kippur. From where do I derive that one adds time at the conclusion of Yom Kippur? The verse states: “From evening until evening” (Leviticus 23:32), implying that one adds at the end as well, just as he does at the beginning. And I have derived only the mitzva of adding to Yom Kippur; from where is it derived that one must also sanctify and append time before and after Festivals? The verse states: “You shall rest” (Leviticus 23:32), to teach that this rule applies even to Festivals, on which one is commanded to rest. I have derived only that one adds an extension to Festivals; from where do I derive that one must also sanctify and append to Shabbatot? The verse states: “Your Shabbat” (Leviticus 23:32). How so? Every place the term: Rest [shevut] is stated, it teaches from here that one sanctifies and appends from the non-sacred weekday to the sacred.

Codifies the obligation to light a lamp before Shabbat and the requirement that it be prepared in time for Shabbat. This provides the Rambam's foundational formulation of the mitzvah, though the detailed question of very early lighting is developed further in later codes.
The passage instructs a woman to light the Shabbat lamp while it is still daytime and the sun remains visible, without delaying until a non-Jewish woman must light it, and to perform the mitzvah herself.
Rambam states that Shabbat candles must be lit while it is still daytime, before sunset; once twilight arrives and it is uncertain whether Shabbat has begun, they may not be lit.
Rashi explains that one may light the Shabbat lamp close to nightfall, but should not light it too early while it is still fully daytime, when it would not be recognizable as a Shabbat lamp.

A person should not hurry to kindle [the Shabbos lights] while there is still much daylight left because then it is not evident that they are being kindled for the sake of Shabbat. Nor should the kindling be delayed [past the appropriate time]. If one seeks to kindle the light while there is still much daylight left and accept Shabbat at that time (close to the time of kindling) he may do so. Since he accepts Shabbat directly thereafter, this is not considered as [kindling too] early, provided that it is after p’lag haminchah, which is one and a quarter seasonal hours before nightfall. RAMA: See later Siman 267. If the candles were light while there is still much daylight, one must extinguish the light and go back and light it again for the sake of Shabbat. (Tur).
Explains the practical timing of Shabbat candle lighting, including the relationship between lighting, sunset, receiving Shabbat, and the possibility of lighting earlier when needed. It also discusses how much time must remain before Shabbat for the lighting to be meaningful and useful.

If they recited Mizmor shir leyom haShabbos in the synagogue even though there is still two hours until night, nevertheless, the Shabbos laws become binding on the minority, and they are forbidden (to do) any manner of work. Even someone who arrives from another city, is obliged to observe the [laws of] Shabbos as soon as the congregation has said, Mizmor shir leyom haShabbos. In a city that has two synagogues, one is not bound by the other.

Joseph Karo presents a dispute over whether lighting Shabbat candles itself initiates Shabbat and prohibits labor, noting that some permit a prior stipulation to delay this acceptance while others tie it to the evening prayer; the passage adds that the customary woman lighting accepts Shabbat unless she stipulates otherwise, whereas other household members remain permitted to work until Barekhu.

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 261:2
Joseph Karo’s passage states that one may add to Shabbat from sunset until bein hashmashos, choosing to accept the entire interval or only part of it, while the Rema adds that Shabbat may be accepted from Plag Hamincha onward; those unsure of the timings should light while it is still visibly day, using natural signs such as the sun’s position, roosters’ perching, or ravens’ perching.
There are those who say that we must add from the weekday (mundane) to the holy and the time of this addition is from the beginning of sunset, i.e., when the sun is no longer visible on the earth’s [horizon], until bein hashmashos. This period is equivalent to the time [sufficient to walk] three-and-a-quarter mil (this is approx. 60 minutes). If one desires to deem this entire period of time as tosefes Shabbos (the addition to Shabbos), he may. If he wants to add less, he may. This is provided that one will add some amount of time when it is certainly day from the mundane to the holy. The time of bein hashemashos is 3/4 mil, which is like walking approximately 960 meters or .596 of a mile before nightfall. Rema: And if one wishes to do this earlier and accepts Shabbos upon himself from Plag Hamincha and onward, he may do so. (Tur; Agur in the name of Tosefos)[See Siman 267]. A person who is not knowledgeable regarding the measure (of bein hashmashos and does not know when to add to it) should kindle the [Shabbos] lights while the sun is still visible on the treetops. If it is a cloudy day, he should kindle them when the roosters sit on a beam while it is still day. If he is in a field where there are no roosters, he should kindle them when the ravens sit there while it is still day

The passage describes three stages of preparation and transition into Shabbat: from midday on Friday, when Shabbat’s light begins to appear; from minchah ketanah, when its illumination increases and voluntary or obligatory tosefet Shabbat begins; and through the three pre-Shabbat blasts, culminating in candle-lighting, which corresponds to the entry of intellectual light.

The passage explains that the custom for women to light Shabbat candles eighteen minutes before sunset is not necessarily based on the stringent view that Shabbat begins three-quarters of a mil before sunset, since many places light only about ten minutes before sunset; it nevertheless permits and praises those who follow that stricter view.

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Shabbat, Chelek 1 11:8
Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu states that, after the published candle-lighting time, a woman may light at least ten minutes before sunset; if she cannot, she may light until sunset, but not after the time Shabbat is customarily accepted at her husband’s synagogue.

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Chanukah 8:28
Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu cites the Mishnah Berurah, who rules that those accustomed to pray maariv at its proper time (after stars emerge) should ideally light candles before maariv, though if candles were not lit beforehand and the time of stars emerging has arrived, one should pray maariv first since it is frequent and contains the recitation of Shema, which is Torah obligation—thus maariv takes precedence over candle-lighting once that time arrives.
Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Shabbat, Chelek 1 11:1
Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu states that the earliest time to light Shabbat candles is from plag hamincha, approximately an hour and a quarter before nightfall, and that one should not light before then.
Rav Yitzchak Yosef cautions against delaying candle lighting until close to sunset, lest the time pass, but permits lighting with a blessing if one is certain that sunset has not yet occurred.
Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Chanukah 14:3
Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu states that on Friday of Chanukah, Chanukah candles and Shabbat candles should be lit before sunset; Chanukah candles may be lit well before sunset, but not before plag hamincha.
Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Shabbat, Chelek 1 11:4
Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu states that one should add from the weekday to the holy day and therefore light Shabbat candles before sunset.
On Friday, Hanuka candles must be lit before Shabbat candles and before sunset—typically about twenty minutes beforehand—while ensuring that they contain enough oil or wax to burn until half an hour after tzeit.
As we have seen, the Sages ordained that one must light the Ḥanuka candles after sunset. If people were to light earlier, the sunlight would render the candles less visible. However, on Friday evening, obviously one may not light candles after sunset, since Shabbat begins at sunset, and on Shabbat one may not light a fire. In addition, one should not light immediately before sunset because of the mitzva of tosefet Shabbat, which dictates that we begin Shabbat a bit early in order to extend the sanctity of Shabbat into the mundane week. In practice, most Israeli communities accept Shabbat about twenty minutes before sunset, and, accordingly, this is the Shabbat candle-lighting time that appears on Israeli calendars. On Shabbat Ḥanuka, one must light the Ḥanuka candles before lighting the Shabbat candles. Although we light Ḥanuka candles before sunset on Friday, the primary time for publicizing the miracle is at night. Therefore, one must make sure that there is sufficient wax or oil for the candles to remain lit until half an hour after tzeit.
Those who cannot return home at nightfall may light later, but should return and light as early as possible, preferably before 9:00, and should avoid eating a fixed meal before lighting.
