What the sources say

The backdrop for this question is the Gemara in Sanhedrin 97a, which reads the pasuk in Yeshayahu as teaching that in the era preceding the end of days truth will scatter and disappear like dispersed flocks — the very absence of truth in the world is a sign of the pre-redemptive moment, implying that its restoration belongs to the age that follows.

The Recanati (Beshalach:39) draws on a midrash to teach that in the days of Mashiach the Shechinah will be exalted and its light will shine like the sun, in keeping with the pasuk in Zecharyah that on that day Hashem will be One and His Name will be One — pointing to a future revelation of divine unity and truth that is not yet fully manifest.

The Sefat Emet (Bereishit, Vayeira) explains that this world is called an "world of falsehood" (עלמא דשיקרא) precisely because the inner truth — that Hashem sustains all existence — is hidden here, and it is specifically because it is hidden that Bnei Yisrael's testimony to His sovereignty carries unique weight; the present concealment thus stands in contrast to a future state of revealed truth.

The Rambam (Mishneh Torah, Melachim and Wars 12:1) states plainly that in the messianic era all will return to the religion of truth (דַּת הָאֱמֶת), and the Tanya (Likkutei Amarim 36:7) builds on this by describing how at that time, especially with the resurrection of the dead, the physicality of the body and world will become refined and able to receive the revealed light of Hashem — the two sources together grounding the disclosure of divine emes in the messianic transformation of the world.

Sanhedrin 97a

Sanhedrin 97a:5

The Gemara presents the signs and timing of the end of days and the coming of Mashiach. It frames the messianic era as one in which concealed realities become manifest.

And the truth will be lacking, as it is stated: “And the truth is lacking [ne’ederet], and he who departs from evil is negated” (Isaiah 59:15). What is the meaning of the phrase: And the truth is lacking [ne’ederet]? The Sages of the study hall of Rav said: This teaches that truth will become like so many flocks [adarim] and walk away. What is the meaning of the phrase: “And he that departs from evil is negated”? The Sages of the study hall of Rabbi Sheila said: Anyone who deviates from evil is deemed insane by the people.

Berakhot 12b

Berakhot 12b:25

Ben Zoma disputes the Sages' position that the obligation to mention the exodus applies to the days of Messiah, citing Jeremiah's prophecy that in those days people will cease swearing by God's name in reference to the exodus from Egypt and will instead swear by God's name in reference to the greater redemption from all lands.

And the Rabbis, who posit that there is no biblical obligation to mention the exodus from Egypt at night, explain the word, all, differently and say: The days of your life, refers to the days in this world, all is added to include the days of the Messiah. GEMARA: The fundamental dispute between Ben Zoma and the Sages appears in the mishna, and the baraita cites its continuation. Disputing the position of the Sages that: All the days of your life, refers to both this world and the days of the Messiah, it was taught in a baraita that Ben Zoma said to the Sages: And is the exodus from Egypt mentioned in the days of the Messiah? Was it not already said that Jeremiah prophesied that in the days of the Messiah: “Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, that they will no longer say: The Lord lives Who brought up the children of Israel out of the Land of Egypt. Rather: As the Lord lives, that brought up and led the seed of the house of Israel up out of the north country and from all the countries where I had driven them” (Jeremiah 23:7–8).

Recanati on the Torah, Beshalach:39

Recanati on the Torah, Beshalach:39

A midrash interprets the divine name and complete throne as alluding to how in the days of mashiach the Shekhinah will be elevated and the crown of beauty will be renewed for those bearing burdens, and its light will be like the light of the sun, as indicated by the verse "On that day, the Lord will be one and His name one" (Zechariah 14:9).

Sefer HaIkkarim IV:42

Sefer HaIkkarim, Maamar 4 42:14

R. Yosef Albo treats truth, faith, and the ultimate purpose of redemption and messianic belief. The discussion is useful for connecting emes with the messianic future.

The truth of the matter is that there are in the Torah and in the Prophets passages definitely indicating the growth of Israel’s dignity, which have never yet been fulfilled in whole or in part, for example: “There shall step forth a star out of Jacob, and a sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite through the corners of Moab, and break down all the sons of Seth.” The Rabbis say: “Shall smite through the corners of Moab,” refers to David; “and break down all the sons of Seth,” refers to the Messianic king. And their interpretation must be true, for David did not rule over all the sons of Seth and there has never been in all Israel a king who ruled over the whole world, who are the sons of Seth. Again, in Isaiah we read: “For this is as the waters of Noah unto Me; For as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee …,” and yet we are still in exile to-day, which shows that the prophecy has not yet been fulfilled. We also read in Isaiah: “For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before Me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain,” a promise which without doubt points to the permanent existence of the whole nation and to its ultimate grandeur.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 36:7

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 36:7

The days of Moshiach, particularly when the dead are revived, represent the ultimate purpose and perfection of creation in this world, which was created for this end from the beginning; sin caused a concealment that affected both the body and world until the end of days, when physicality will be purified and become able to receive the revelation of God's light.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 37:1

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 37:1

The ultimate perfection of the messianic era and resurrection of the dead—which is a revelation of the infinite light of the blessed Holy One in the physical world—depends on our deeds and service throughout the exile, and the revelation of His glory and Godliness and removal of the spirit of impurity from the earth depends on the drawing down of His Godliness and infinite light to the vital soul encompassing all of Israel through the fulfillment of all 248 positive commandments.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 36

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 36:5

The Alter Rebbe explains that the purpose of creation is for God’s glory to be revealed in the lower worlds, which will be fulfilled most fully in the days of Mashiach. This is a strong Chassidic framework for the public revelation of divine truth.

Clearly, the purpose of the hishtalshelut of the worlds and their descent, degree by degree, is not for the sake of the higher worlds, because for them this is a descent from the light of His Countenance, blessed be He. But the ultimate purpose [of creation] is this lowest world, for such was His will, blessed be He, that He shall have satisfaction when the sitra achara is subdued and the darkness is turned to light, so that the Divine light of the En Sof, blessed is He, shall shine forth in the place of the darkness and sitra achara throughout this world, all the more strongly and intensely, with the excellence of light emerging from darkness, than its effulgence in the higher worlds, where it shines through “garments” and in concealment of the Countenance, which screen and conceal the light of the En Sof, blessed is He, in order that they should not dissolve out of existence. For this purpose, the Holy One, blessed is He, gave to Israel the Torah which is called “might” and “strength,” as the Rabbis, of blessed memory, have said that the Almighty puts strength into the righteous in order that they may receive their reward in the hereafter, without being nullified in their very existence, in the Divine light that will be revealed to them in the hereafter without any cloak, as is written, “Your teacher shall no longer be concealed from you [literally: He will not conceal Himself from you with robe and garment]…but your eyes shall see your Teacher.” It is also written, “For they shall see eye to eye…” and “You shall no longer have the sun for light by day…for the Lord shall be to you for an everlasting light….”

Sefat Emet, Vayeira

Sefat Emet, Genesis, Vayera:2

The Sefat Emet often interprets divine truth as something increasingly revealed through history and especially in redemption. This parsha teaching can be used to connect emes with the messianic era.

Ein Aya, Berakhot 1:121

Ein Aya, Berakhot 1:121

When the world is perfected in God's kingship and impurity and wickedness are destroyed, all will recognize and know that complete praise befits God's great name; and from an elevated perspective that understands how the good of existence becomes more exalted and precious when evil is found and then removed from the world than if evil had never existed at all, one can justify attributing praise even to the divine name associated with the temporal governance that permits evil to exist.
