Honoring and Delighting in Shabbat

These sources explore the twin obligations of kavod Shabbat (honoring Shabbat) and oneg Shabbat (delighting in Shabbat), drawing from biblical commandments through rabbinic interpretation and medieval legal codification. They address how these principles are expressed through preparation, dignified conduct, festive meals, and personal involvement in welcoming the day.

What the sources say

The foundational pasuk in Yeshayahu 58:13-14 pairs two distinct terms for Shabbat — calling it 'oneg' (delight) and 'mechubad' (honored) — and promises that one who honors and delights in Shabbat will ride the heights of the earth and inherit the heritage of Yaakov, establishing kavod and oneg as two separate but linked components of Shabbat observance rooted in the words of the prophets rather than the Torah's own command to 'remember' and 'guard' Shabbat as in Shemot 20:8-11.

Mishneh Torah, Sabbath 30:1-10 codifies this explicitly: four things are said of Shabbat, two from the Torah (zachor and shamor) and two expounded by the prophets (kavod and oneg), and he details that kavod means preparing one's table and dressing nicely while oneg means enjoying fine food and drink; Shulchan Arukh HaRav, Orach Chayim 242:1-2 and Mishnah Berurah 242:1-3 preserve this same twofold structure, tracing it to the baraita that 'mikra kodesh' means both to sanctify and honor Shabbat through clean clothing and to delight it through fine food and drink.

The Gemara in Shabbat 118b:2 and Shabbat 118a:8 grounds oneg in the same verse, teaching that one who delights in Shabbat is rescued from the oppression of exile and receives a boundless inheritance and the fulfillment of his heart's desires, deriving this through a verbal analogy to the pasuk's language of 'bamotei eretz'; the practical content of oneg — fish, rich stews, fine wine — is drawn out there and summarized in Peninei Halakhah, Shabbat 2:3 and Kaf HaChayim on Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 242:1.

Kavod, by contrast, is expressed through preparation and dignity rather than appetite: Shabbat 113a:13-14 discusses changing into special garments so that one's Shabbat clothing is not like weekday clothing, in fulfillment of 'v'chibadeto,' and Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 250:1-2 together with Shulchan Arukh HaRav, Orach Chayim 250:1 describe rising early Friday to personally prepare for Shabbat as an expression of kavod, while Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 262:1-3 and Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 242 add setting the table, clean clothing, and dressing as though to greet a king or bride as further expressions of kavod distinct from the oneg of eating and drinking.

Shabbat 117b:9-11 and Beitzah 15b:4-5 ground the practical obligation to prepare Shabbat's needs — rising early, doubling the bread — in the verse 'remember the Shabbat day,' linking preparation to the dimension of zachor and kavod rather than oneg per se, while Shabbat 119a:2-4 shows sages going to lengths of expense and dignity to honor Shabbat's arrival, described as going out to greet 'Shabbat the queen.'

The relationship extends to reward and spiritual effect: Shabbat 119b:3-4 describes angels accompanying a person home from the synagogue who bless a house found prepared — lamp lit, table set, bed made — as a sign that such honor earns the blessing of another Shabbat like it, linking the physical preparations of kavod to divine favor.

Revavos Ephraim 6:343 addresses a related practical uncertainty in the liturgy — whether one must repeat Mussaf after omitting Shabbat's mention or reciting incorrect Sukkot offerings — surveying authorities who require repetition against others who rule leniently, and ultimately records a shift toward the lenient position.

Az Nidberu 8:71 holds that the various reasons given for lighting Shabbat candles all fall under the category of oneg, and that the broader mitzvah of oneg itself derives from the obligation of kavod Shabbat, reflected in the liturgical description of Shabbat as a day of splendor, rest, and delight — making kavod the root from which the specific practice of oneg, including candle-lighting, branches out.

B'tzel HaChochma 1:68 sharpens the distinction by arguing that Shabbat carries a rabbinic obligation of oneg but, unlike festivals, has no formal mitzvah of physical simchah; nonetheless spiritual rejoicing through Torah study, song, and praise remains applicable to Shabbat, situating oneg as a category distinct from — and narrower than — the simchah required on Yom Tov.

Responsa on this question

Revavos Ephraim (Revavos Ephraim 4:97) — Revavos Ephraim addresses honor of Shabbat and pleasure of Shabbat in the context of numerous practical halakhic questions regarding Shabbat observance, and does not state a unified position on how kovod and oneg Shabbat should be balanced as general principles.

Az Nidberu (Az Nidberu 8:2) — Az Nidberu holds that lighting Shabbat candles is fundamentally obligatory based on oneg Shabbat (Shabbat pleasure), and that this obligation encompasses both the honor of Shabbat and the provision of light in the home, such that one may fulfill the obligation by lighting electric lights alongside or instead of candles.

Isaiah 58:13-14

Isaiah 58:13-14

Isaiah presents Shabbat as a delight and a day set apart from ordinary pursuits, promising spiritual blessing to those who honor it rather than treating it as a weekday.

אִם־תָּשִׁ֤יב מִשַּׁבָּת֙ רַגְלֶ֔ךָ עֲשׂ֥וֹת חֲפָצֶ֖ךָ בְּי֣וֹם קׇדְשִׁ֑י וְקָרָ֨אתָ לַשַּׁבָּ֜ת עֹ֗נֶג לִקְד֤וֹשׁ יְהֹוָה֙ מְכֻבָּ֔ד וְכִבַּדְתּוֹ֙ מֵעֲשׂ֣וֹת דְּרָכֶ֔יךָ מִמְּצ֥וֹא חֶפְצְךָ֖ וְדַבֵּ֥ר דָּבָֽר׃ אָ֗ז תִּתְעַנַּג֙ עַל־יְהֹוָ֔ה וְהִרְכַּבְתִּ֖יךָ עַל־[בָּ֣מֳתֵי] (במותי) אָ֑רֶץ וְהַאֲכַלְתִּ֗יךָ נַחֲלַת֙ יַעֲקֹ֣ב אָבִ֔יךָ כִּ֛י פִּ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה דִּבֵּֽר׃ {פ}

If you refrain from trampling the sabbath, From pursuing your affairs on My holy day; If you call the sabbath “delight,” GOD ’s holy day “honored”; And if you honor it and go not your ways Nor look to your affairs, nor strike bargains— Then you can seek GOD’s favor. I will set you astride the heights of the earth, And let you enjoy the heritage of your father Jacob— For GOD’s mouth has spoken.

Exodus 20:8-11

Exodus 20:8-11

The fourth commandment establishes Shabbat as a sanctified day of cessation, grounding its special status in God's own rest after creation.

זָכ֛וֹר֩ אֶת־י֥֨וֹם הַשַּׁבָּ֖֜ת לְקַדְּשֽׁ֗וֹ׃ וְי֨וֹם֙ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔֜י שַׁבָּ֖֣ת ׀ לַיהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑֗יךָ לֹֽ֣א־תַעֲשֶׂ֣֨ה כׇל־מְלָאכָ֜֡ה אַתָּ֣ה ׀ וּבִנְךָ֣͏ֽ־וּ֠בִתֶּ֗ךָ עַבְדְּךָ֤֨ וַאֲמָֽתְךָ֜֙ וּבְהֶמְתֶּ֔֗ךָ וְגֵרְךָ֖֙ אֲשֶׁ֥֣ר בִּשְׁעָרֶֽ֔יךָ׃ כִּ֣י שֵֽׁשֶׁת־יָמִים֩ עָשָׂ֨ה יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶת־הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם וְאֶת־הָאָ֗רֶץ אֶת־הַיָּם֙ וְאֶת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֔ם וַיָּ֖נַח בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֑י עַל־כֵּ֗ן בֵּרַ֧ךְ יְהֹוָ֛ה אֶת־י֥וֹם הַשַּׁבָּ֖ת וַֽיְקַדְּשֵֽׁהוּ׃ {ס}

Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy. but the seventh day is a sabbath of the ETERNAL your God: you shall not do any work—you, your son or daughter, your male or female slave, or your cattle, or the stranger who is within your settlements. For in six days GOD made heaven and earth and sea—and all that is in them—and then rested on the seventh day; therefore GOD blessed the sabbath day and hallowed it.

Jeremiah 17:19-27

Jeremiah 17:19-27

Jeremiah commands the people to honor Shabbat by refraining from weekday commerce and carrying, linking observance with the sanctity of Jerusalem.

Thus said GOD: Guard yourselves for your own sake against carrying burdens on the sabbath day, and bringing them through the gates of Jerusalem. Nor shall you carry out burdens from your houses on the sabbath day, or do any work, but you shall hallow the sabbath day, as I commanded your ancestors. If you obey Me—declares GOD—and do not bring in burdens through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but hallow the sabbath day and do no work on it,

Shabbat 113a

Shabbat 113a:13-14

The Talmud derives practices of Shabbat honor from the verse 'and you shall call Shabbat a delight,' including dignified clothing and conduct distinct from the weekday.

And it was taught in the Tosefta: The members of Rabban Gamliel’s household did not even fold their white garments because they had others into which they could change. Rav Huna said: If one has new garments into which he could change on Shabbat, he will change into those garments; and if one does not have garments into which he could change, he lets his garments hang down before Shabbat to beautify himself in deference to Shabbat as it used to be the custom of wealthy people to wear their clothes loosely. Rav Safra strongly objects to this: Doesn’t this appear as haughtiness? The Gemara answers: Since every day he does not do so, and now in honor of Shabbat he is doing so, it does not appear as haughtiness. Rather it is apparent that he is acting in deference to Shabbat. On a related note, the Gemara cites what we learned with regard to the following passage: “If you keep your feet from breaking, from pursuing your affairs on My holy day, and you call Shabbat a delight, the Lord’s holy day honorable, and you honor it by not going your own way, from attending to your affairs and speaking idle words” (Isaiah 58:13). The Rabbis derived from the words “and you honor it” that your dress on Shabbat should not be like your dress during the week, as Rabbi Yoḥanan would refer to his clothing as my honor, indicating that appropriate clothing is a form of deference. The words “going your own way” mean that your walking on Shabbat should not be like your walking during the week. “From attending to your affairs” means it is prohibited to deal with your weekday affairs and to speak about them on Shabbat. However, affairs of Heaven, i.e., those pertaining to mitzvot, are permitted. “And speaking idle words”

Shabbat 118b

Shabbat 118b:2

The sages describe delighting in Shabbat through honored meals and state that one who delights in Shabbat receives abundant reward; the passage also discusses honoring Shabbat through preparation and food.

Rav Naḥman bar Yitzḥak said: One who delights in Shabbat is rescued from the oppression of exile. He derives it by means of a verbal analogy. It is written here, with regard to Shabbat: “And I will cause you to ride on the heights [bamotei] of the world” (Isaiah 58:14), and it is written there: “You are fortunate Israel, who is like you? A nation redeemed by God, the shield that aids you and the sword of your triumph. Your enemies will try to defeat you and you will trample their high places [bamoteimo]” (Deuteronomy 33:29). Rav Yehuda said that Rav said: With regard to anyone who delights in the Shabbat, God grants him his heart’s desires, as it is stated: “And you shall delight in God and He will grant you your heart’s desires” (Psalms 37:4). This delight in God, which is mentioned in the verse, I do not know what it is. When it says: “And you shall call the Shabbat delight,” one must say: It is the delight of Shabbat. The Gemara asks: With what does one delight in the day of Shabbat? Rav Yehuda, son of Rav Shmuel bar Sheilat, said in the name of Rav: With a dish of beets, and large fish, and heads of garlic. Rav Ḥiyya bar Ashi said that Rav said: Even with regard to a small item and one prepared it in deference to Shabbat, it is a delight. The Gemara asks: What is the small item mentioned? Rav Pappa said: Small fried fish. Rabbi Yosei said: May my portion be among those who eat three meals on Shabbat. Apropos this statement of Rabbi Yosei, the Gemara cites additional declarations. Rabbi Yosei said: May my portion be among those who complete hallel every day. The Gemara is surprised at this: Is that so? Didn’t the Master say: One who reads hallel every day is tantamount to one who curses and blasphemes God. He displays contempt for hallel by not reserving it for days on which miracles occurred. The Gemara answers: When we say this statement of Rabbi Yosei, we are referring to the verses of praise [pesukei dezimra], recited during the morning service, not to hallel (Psalms 113–118) recited on special days.

Shabbat 119b

Shabbat 119b:3-4

The passage portrays Shabbat preparations and the honor due to Shabbat, including the household's active anticipation and welcoming of the day.

Rav Ḥisda said that Mar Ukva said: One who prays on Shabbat evening and recites vaykhullu, the two ministering angels who accompany the person at all times place their hands on his head and say to him: “And your iniquity has passed, and your sin has been atoned” (Isaiah 6:7). It was taught in a baraita: Rabbi Yosei bar Yehuda says: Two ministering angels accompany a person on Shabbat evening from the synagogue to his home, one good angel and one evil angel. And when he reaches his home and finds a lamp burning and a table set and his bed made, the good angel says: May it be Your will that it shall be like this for another Shabbat. And the evil angel answers against his will: Amen. And if the person’s home is not prepared for Shabbat in that manner, the evil angel says: May it be Your will that it shall be so for another Shabbat, and the good angel answers against his will: Amen. Rabbi Elazar said: A person should always set his table on Shabbat eve with all the preparations for an important feast, even if he only needs the table set for an olive-bulk of food. And Rabbi Ḥanina said: A person should always set his table at the conclusion of Shabbat, Saturday night, for a feast in deference to the Shabbat that passed, even if he only needs the table set for an olive-bulk of food. And with regard to the meal at the conclusion of Shabbat, they said: Hot water after Shabbat is a remedy [melugma], warm bread at the conclusion of Shabbat is a remedy. The Gemara relates: They would prepare for Rabbi Abbahu at the conclusion of Shabbat a third-born calf, and he would eat one kidney from it. When his son Avimi grew up, he said to his father: Why do you waste so much? Let us leave a kidney over from Shabbat eve, and you will not need to slaughter an entire calf for that purpose. Indeed, they left the calf and did not slaughter it, and a lion came and ate it. This teaches that one should not be miserly when it comes to honoring Shabbat.

Midrash Tanchuma, Bereshit 2:1

The passage states that Israel is obligated to rest on Shabbat because God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh, blessing and sanctifying it like a completed house celebrated with a festival.

Mekhilta DeRabbi Yishmael, Tractate Vayassa 1:19

The passage records two interpretations of “חֹק וּמִשְׁפָּט”: Rabbi Yehoshua identifies them with Shabbat and honoring parents, while Rabbi Elazar HaModa‘i identifies them with forbidden sexual relations and laws concerning coercion, fines, and damages.

Pesachim 65a

Pesachim 65a:4-6

Chachmei Bavel explain that rinsing the Temple floor on Shabbat was contrary to Rabbi Eliezer’s view that sweeping and sprinkling water are Torah-prohibited labors, whereas the Sages classify them as rabbinic שבות, which does not apply in the Temple.

It was further stated in the mishna that in the same manner that the procedure involving the Paschal lamb was performed during the week, so was it performed on Shabbat, and that even on Shabbat the priests would rinse the floor of blood, contrary to the wishes of the Sages. The Gemara asks: Contrary to the wishes of whom? Which Sage did not consent to this practice? Rav Ḥisda said: It was contrary to the wishes of Rabbi Eliezer, who maintains that rinsing the floor on Shabbat is prohibited by Torah law. As, if one accepts the opinion of the Rabbis, who disagree with him, don’t they say that rinsing the floor is prohibited due to a rabbinic decree? And the principle is that rabbinic decrees do not apply in the Temple. Consequently, it should be permitted to wash the floor in the Temple on Shabbat according to the opinion of the Rabbis. The Gemara asks: What is the source of this dispute? The Gemara answers: As it was taught in the following baraita: One who milks an animal, or sets milk to curdle (Arukh), or makes cheese is liable if he performed the activity in the measure of a dried fig-bulk; one who sweeps the house, or sprinkles water on the floor, or removes honeycombs, if he did so unwittingly on Shabbat, he is liable to bring a sin-offering, as he has performed a labor prohibited by Torah law on Shabbat. And if he did so intentionally on a Festival, he is flogged with forty lashes; this is the statement of Rabbi Eliezer. And the Rabbis say with regard to the cases of sweeping, sprinkling water on the floor, and harvesting honeycombs: Both this, performing these actions on Shabbat, and that, doing so on a Festival, are prohibited only due to rabbinic decrees. According to Rabbi Eliezer, rinsing the floor is the same as sweeping the floor. Therefore, it is prohibited on Shabbat even in the Temple, as there is no allowance to perform a labor prohibited by Torah law that is not essential for the proper sacrifice of the offerings.

Shabbat 118a

Shabbat 118a:8

Chachmei Bavel state that whoever delights in Shabbat receives a boundless inheritance, based on the verse promising that those who call Shabbat a delight will delight in God and be elevated and nourished.

Rabbi Yoḥanan said in the name of Rabbi Yosei: With regard to anyone who delights in the Shabbat, God gives him a boundless portion, i.e., a very large reward, as it is stated: “If you keep your feet from violating Shabbat, from pursuing your affairs on My holy day, and you call Shabbat a delight, the Lord’s holy day honored, and you honor it by not going your own way, or attending to your own matters or speaking idle words. Then you shall delight in the Lord and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the world, and to feast

Shabbat 119a

Shabbat 119a:2-4

Chachmei Bavel describe welcoming Shabbat as a queen or bride and honoring it through elaborate food preparations, appropriate clothing, and personally undertaking various cooking and household tasks.

The Gemara now returns to the issue of delight in and deference to Shabbat. Rabbi Ḥanina would wrap himself in his garment and stand at nightfall on Shabbat eve, and say: Come and we will go out to greet Shabbat the queen. Rabbi Yannai put on his garment on Shabbat eve and said: Enter, O bride. Enter, O bride. The Gemara relates: Rabba bar Rav Huna happened to come to the house of Rabba bar Rav Naḥman. They brought before him three se’a of oiled biscuits. He said to them: Did you know I was coming and prepared all of this in my honor? They said to him: Are you more important to us than Shabbat? The biscuits were prepared in deference to Shabbat. Rabbi Abba bought thirteen plain staters [astirei peshitei] worth half a zuz of meat from thirteen butchers in deference to Shabbat, so that he would have various types of fine meat. And he would place the meats at the door hinge at the entrance to his house to hurry to bring another type of meat. And he said to the cooks, in order to rush them: Hurry and prepare it, hurry and prepare it. The Gemara also relates: Rabbi Abbahu would sit on an ivory chair [takhteka] and fan the fire cooking the food for Shabbat, in order to play a role in preparations for Shabbat. Rav Anan would don a simple black garment for the Shabbat preparations, as the school of Rabbi Yishmael taught: While wearing the garments in which he cooked a pot of food for his master, one should not dilute a cup of wine for his Master. One should wear a garment appropriate for the task at hand. Rav Safra would roast the head of an animal to prepare it for Shabbat. Rava salted a shibuta fish in deference to Shabbat. Rav Huna kindled lamps in deference to Shabbat. Rav Pappa spun the wicks for the Shabbat lamp. Rav Ḥisda cut the beets in preparation for Shabbat. Rabba and Rav Yosef cut wood. Rabbi Zeira prepared thin sticks for kindling. Rav Naḥman bar Yitzḥak would load objects on his shoulder and enter, load objects on his shoulder and exit. He said: If Rabbi Ami and Rabbi Asi happened to visit me, would I not load objects on my shoulder before them? So too, it is fitting to do so in deference to Shabbat. And some say that Rabbi Ami and Rabbi Asi would load objects on their shoulders and enter, load objects on their shoulders and exit. They said: If Rabbi Yoḥanan happened to come to visit us, would we not load objects on our shoulders before him?

Shabbat 117b

Shabbat 117b:9-11

Chachmei Bavel teach that one should rise early on Friday to prepare for Shabbat, break bread over two loaves, and use bread associated with one mitzvah for another; the passage also records differing views on the number of Shabbat meals, three or four.

Rav Ḥisda said: A person should always rise early on Friday in order to prepare all of the expenditures for Shabbat, as it is written with regard to the collection of the manna: “And it shall be on the sixth day, and they will prepare that which they have brought” (Exodus 16:5), indicating that the children of Israel would begin preparing the food for Shabbat immediately upon collecting the manna in the morning. Apropos manna, the Gemara mentions other matters derived from it. Rabbi Abba said: On Shabbat a person is obligated to break bread in his meal over two loaves of bread, as it is written: “And it happened on the sixth day, they collected double the bread, two omer for each one” (Exodus 16:22). Rav Ashi said: I saw that Rav Kahana took two loaves in his hand and broke one, not both at once. He said in explanation that it is written: “They collected double the bread,” meaning that one collects and holds two loaves together, but need not break both. Rabbi Zeira would break off a piece that would suffice for his entire meal. Ravina said to Rav Ashi: Doesn’t that appear like gluttony? Rav Ashi said to him: Since on every other day he does not do this and now he is doing so, it does not appear like gluttony. Rabbi Ami and Rabbi Asi, when the bread from the eiruv would happen to become available to them, they would begin and recite the blessing over it. They said in explanation: Since one mitzva was performed with it, let an additional mitzva be performed with it. We learned in the mishna that one may rescue food for three meals on Shabbat. How so? If a fire ignited before the meal on Shabbat evening, one rescues food for three meals; if a fire ignited Shabbat morning, he rescues food for two meals; if a fire ignited in the afternoon, he rescues food for one meal. With regard to meals on Shabbat, the Sages taught in a baraita: How many meals is a person obligated to eat on Shabbat? Three. Rabbi Ḥidka says: Four. Rabbi Yoḥanan said: And both of them derived their opinions from one verse: “And Moses said: Eat it today, for today is Shabbat for God, today you will not find it in the field” (Exodus 16:25). Rabbi Ḥidka holds: These three mentions of the word today allude to the number of meals on Shabbat besides the evening meal, as Moses spoke on Shabbat morning. And the Rabbis hold that these three mentions include the evening meal. We learned in the mishna: If a fire ignited on Shabbat evening,

Beitzah 15b

Beitzah 15b:4-5

Chachmei Bavel explain that the eiruv tavshilin was instituted to ensure that Shabbat is remembered when a Festival precedes it and, out of deference to Shabbat, that one selects a choice portion for both Shabbat and the Festival.

GEMARA: The Gemara asks: From where are these matters derived? What is the source of the halakha of the joining of cooked foods and of the halakha that one who failed to prepare such an eiruv may not cook on a Festival for Shabbat? Shmuel said that the source is as the verse states: “Remember the Shabbat day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8); from which he infers: Remember it and safeguard it from another day that comes to make it forgotten. When a Festival occurs on Friday, preoccupation with the Festival and the preparation and enjoyment of its meals could lead one to overlook Shabbat. Therefore, the Sages instituted an ordinance to ensure that Shabbat will be remembered even then. The Gemara asks: What is the reason that the Sages instituted this ordinance in particular to ensure that Shabbat would not be overlooked? Rava said: The Sages did so in deference to Shabbat, and they instituted an eiruv so that one will select a choice portion for Shabbat and a choice portion for the Festival. If one fails to prepare a dish specifically for Shabbat before the Festival, it could lead to failure to show the appropriate deference to Shabbat.

Pesachim 65b

Pesachim 65b:10

Chachmei Bavel list the Pesach offering procedures that override Shabbat—slaughtering, blood sprinkling, removing its entrails, and offering its fats—while roasting, washing its entrails, transporting it, bringing it from outside the boundary, and cutting away a wart do not, though Rabbi Eliezer permits these as well.

Mishneh Torah, Sabbath 30:1-10

Mishneh Torah, Sabbath 30:1-10

Rambam codifies the dual obligations of honoring and delighting in Shabbat: honor through preparation, clean clothing, and a set table, and delight through food and drink according to one's means.

There are four [dimensions] to the [observance of] the Sabbath: two originating in the Torah, and two originating in the words of our Sages, which are given exposition by the Prophets. [The two dimensions originating] in the Torah are the commandments "Remember [the Sabbath day]" and "Observe [the Sabbath day]." [The two dimensions] given exposition by the Prophets are honor and pleasure, as [Isaiah 58:13] states: "And you shall call the Sabbath 'A delight, sanctified unto God and honored.' A person should prepare his table on Friday, even if he is [to partake] only [of an amount of food] equivalent to the size of an olive. Similarly, a person should prepare his table on Saturday night, even if he is [to partake] only [of an amount of food] equivalent to the size of an olive. [In this manner,] he shows his respect for the Sabbath when it enters and when it departs. One should prepare one's house while it is still day as an expression of respect for the Sabbath. There should be a lamp burning, a table prepared [with food] to eat, and a couch bedecked with spreads. All of these are expressions of honor for the Sabbath. What is meant by [Sabbath] delight? This refers to our Sages' statement that a person must prepare a particularly sumptuous dish and a pleasantly flavored beverage for the Sabbath. All of this must be done within the context of a person's financial status. The more one spends [both financially,] in expenses undertaken for the Sabbath and [in effort,] in the preparation of many good foods, the more praiseworthy it is. If, however, this is not within one's [financial] capacity, even if one merely stews food or the like in honor of the Sabbath, this is considered to be Sabbath delight. One is not obligated to strain oneself or to borrow from others in order to prepare more food for the Sabbath. The Sages of the former generations said, "Make your Sabbaths as weekdays, but do not depend on others."

Kad HaKemach, Shabbat 1:1

Kad HaKemach, Shabbat 1:1

Rabbenu Bachya explains that honoring and delighting in Shabbat means preparing superior food and drink while recalling Creation and thanking God, thereby giving pleasure to both body and soul and meriting eternal life; “call Shabbat a delight” also portrays inviting Shabbat like a king to one’s table and receiving divine honor.

Rabbeinu Bahya, Shemot 31:16

Rabbeinu Bahya, Shemot 31:16

The passage explains that one should prepare for Shabbat with diligence and care, drawing from biblical language about making ready and arranging, and teaches that a person must be cautious in honoring Shabbat by refraining from all labor and making efforts to prepare for Shabbat's needs so that one will have a pleasant meal for Shabbat, as the sages said "from one Shabbat to your Shabbat," and the prophet Isaiah states "call Shabbat a delight" meaning one should arrange and take pleasure in it like someone preparing for a guest.

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 250

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 250:1-2

The Shulchan Arukh rules that one should rise early to prepare for Shabbat, presenting preparation itself as an expression of kavod Shabbat.

A person should be arise on friday early to prepare for Shabbat; even if he has many servants to serve him he should find something small to do, for the honor (of Shabbat). We see this with Rav Chisda who would cut vegetables finely; Rabah and Rav Yosef, who would chop wood; Rabbi Zeira who would light the flame; And Rav Nachman, who would clean the house and replace the weekday cutlery with cutlery designated for Shabbat. We can emulate these people and one should not say: "It is unbecoming of me," for this is the honor of Shabbat. RAMA: Additionally one should sharpen his knife to ease eating on Erev Shabbat for this honors the Shabbat and helps him eat (Kol Bo; Beis Yosef in the name of Sefer Chayei Olam) A person should have more meat, wine and treats, to the best of his ability.

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 262:1-3

Joseph Karo’s passage instructs one to prepare an orderly table and home, wear clean and attractive clothing, and joyfully welcome Shabbat like a king, bride, or groom; it adds that one should dress in Shabbat clothes immediately after bathing near evening.

To Sanctify Shabbat With a Set Table and Clean Clothes, 3 Seifim: One should set his table and take his cushions and arrange the appearances of the house, so that we should find it arranged and ordered when he returns from Synagogue. Rema: It is that our tables are kept set all of Shabbat and such is the custom and one shouldn't change it. (Tur; Mordechai; Hagahos Maimoni) One should strive to have good clothing for Shabbat and if is impossible for him to do so, he should at least lengthen (meaning, he should lengthen the hem at the bottom so it is longer like the style of the wealthy who lounge around their homes, Rashi) his clothes at bottom in a respectful way. One should wear nice clothes and celebrate the arrival of Shabbat like the greeting of the king or the greeting of bride and groom. Rebbe Chanina would shroud himself in his garment and stand waiting on the evening approaching Shabbat and say " Come and go out to greet the Shabbat queen" and Rebbe Yannai would say "Come bride, Come bride." Rema: and one should dress himself in Shabbat garments immediately after he bathes himself and this is an honor for Shabbat, and because of this, one should only bathe close to the evening [approaching Shabbat] so that he may dress himself immediately. (The new Hagahos Mordechai)

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 529:1

Joseph Karo’s passage states that Yom Tov should be divided between Torah study and eating and drinking, with generous expenditure, honor, and enjoyment like Shabbat, including two loaves, wine, and better clothing than on Shabbat; it also discusses avoiding food before the holiday, kneading bread in its honor, omitting a third meal, and arriving late at and leaving early from synagogue because of Yom Tov joy.

The Laws of Being Joyful on a Yom Tov. Containing 4 paragraphs: It is a holiday mitzvah to spend half the time in the House of Study and half of the time eating and drinking. One should not skimp on holiday expenses; it must be honored and enjoyed like Shabbat. Rema: It is forbidden to eat after Mincha on the day before a holiday, just like for Shabbat, and this is part of honoring it (Rambam chapter 6). However, if the day before the holiday is Shabbat, one can have the third meal and eat a bit of bread in honor of the holiday. It is a mitzvah to knead bread on the day before the holiday in honor of the holiday (Mahari"l laws of a holiday) like on Friday, as was explained above in chapter 342. It is an obligation to eat two loaves of bread and to include wine in the meal. Holiday clothes should be nicer than those for Shabbat. It is not the practice to make a third meal. And on a holiday, we tarry when going to synagogue and quickly leave synagogue because of the holiday joy (Gemara end of chapter "Hakoreh Omed").

Responsa Rav Pealim, Volume III, Orach Chayim 22

Responsa Rav Pealim, Volume III, Orach Chayim 22:2-3

Yosef Hayyim contrasts the Rambam’s classification of Shabbat honor and delight as prophetic elaborations of Torah obligations with sources suggesting that delighting in Shabbat itself is a Torah mitzvah, including the translations and interpretations of Yonatan ben Uziel and the Rashba.

The passage rules that breaking a cake bearing letters or designs in coloring is prohibited as erasing, while breaking one marked with liquids or an impermanent imprint is permitted because the markings are not lasting, despite the usual prohibition of erasing such writing, for the sake of kovod and oneg Shabbos.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 26

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 26:1

Tanya teaches that overcoming the evil inclination requires alacrity born of joy and an open, worry-free heart rather than the heaviness of sadness, and that heavenly anxiety arising during work or business is a tactic of the evil inclination, whereas Divine service itself must be performed joyfully.

Truly this should be made known as a cardinal principle, that as with a victory over a physical obstacle, such as in the case of two individuals who are wrestling with each other, each striving to throw the other—if one is lazy and sluggish he will easily be defeated and thrown, even though he be stronger than the other, exactly so is it in the conquest of one’s evil nature; it is impossible to conquer it with laziness and heaviness, which originate in sadness and in a heart that is dulled like a stone, but rather with alacrity which derives from joy and from a heart that is free and cleansed from any trace of worry and sadness in the world. Furthermore, Scripture states it explicitly: “Because you did not serve the L–rd your G–d with joyfulness…”—and everyone is familiar with the commentary of the Arizal on this verse. As for the sadness which is connected with heavenly matters, one must seek ways and means of freeing oneself from it, to say nothing of the time of Divine service, when one must serve G–d with gladness and a joyful heart. But even if he is a man of commerce and worldly affairs, should there enter into him any melancholy or anxiety about heavenly matters during the time of his business affairs, it is clearly a machination of evil impulse in order to lure him afterward into lusts, G–d forbid, as is known. For were it not so, whence would a genuine sadness, which is one that is derived from love or fear of G–d, come to him in the midst of his business affairs?

Shem MiShmuel, Shabbat Shuva 3

Shem MiShmuel's Shabbat teachings explore the inner meaning of Shabbat holiness and its capacity to elevate ordinary physical life, providing a Hasidic perspective on kavod and oneg.

Likutei Moharan, Part II 17:2

Nachman teaches that Shabbat should be observed with great joy, without sadness or worry, by taking delight in God and increasing in all forms of Shabbat pleasure, including food, drink, and clothing, since Shabbat eating is entirely spiritual and holy.

Shem MiShmuel, Tazria 7:26

Shem Mishmuel explains that Shabbat delight is expressed through the meal, with the three meals corresponding to thought, speech, and action and drawing holiness downward, whereas “nega” reverses this order, signifying the withdrawal of holiness upward and the consequent arrival of forces of impurity.

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh Yalkut Yosef, Orach Chaim 289:1

Rav Yitzchak Yosef states that the Shabbat daytime meal should be prepared like the Friday-night meal, beginning with kiddush over wine, followed by handwashing, lechem mishneh, and the meal; he also notes customary verses recited before kiddush and explains that reciting the half-verse “על כן ברך ה' את יום השבת ויקדשהו” is permissible.

Rav Mordechai Eliyahu (Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Chanukah 3:17)

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Chanukah 3:17

Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu cites the Kaf HaChaim’s discussion that one should establish a bread-based meal on Rosh Chodesh and recite Birkat HaMazon, preferably eating two loaves to honor the day more than an ordinary weekday.

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Shabbat, Chelek 1 1:16

Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu advises Shabbat hosts to learn their guests’ food preferences and kosher practices in advance, prepare accordingly, and prioritize feeding a hungry guest promptly, illustrating this with a story about the Chafetz Chaim.

Rav Mordechai Eliyahu (Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Shabbat, Chelek 1 16:24)

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Shabbat, Chelek 1 16:24

Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu teaches that when a group eats a Shabbat meal together, such as at a celebration, it is preferable for one person to recite Kiddush on behalf of everyone rather than for each person to recite it individually, based on “berov am hadrat melech.

Rav Eliezer Melamed (Peninei Halakhah, Shabbat 2:3)

Peninei Halakhah, Shabbat 2:3

The passage teaches that oneg Shabbat is fulfilled by providing better food and drink than one normally eats during the week, according to one’s means, and that properly enjoying Shabbat through Torah, prayer, and festive meals unites the spiritual and material realms, bringing blessing and protection from harm.

It is a mitzva to make Shabbat enjoyable through superior food and beverages, depending on one’s means. Spending generously and preparing many tasty foods is praiseworthy (MT 30:7) and a fulfillment of the verse: “Call Shabbat ‘delight’” (Yeshayahu 58:13). The Sages state that whoever fulfills the mitzva of oneg Shabbat (making Shabbat a delight) merits great things: he receives a limitless portion; his heart’s desires are fulfilled; he is saved from the birth-pangs of the Messiah, from the pre-messianic wars, and from hell; and he becomes wealthy (Shabbat 118-119a). This is because life and blessing depend upon the connection between the material and spiritual realms. One is alive if his soul inhabits his body; when one dies, his soul departs his body. When one’s material existence is linked to higher realms, it is invigorated and blessed at its root; when it is distanced from the source of its vitality, from faith and spiritual values, its life is diminished, it deteriorates, and it is cursed. What makes Shabbat special is that it has increased sanctity expressed in both body and soul – through Torah, prayer, and festive meals. This unifies the spiritual and material, the body and the soul. Life is strengthened, and blessing flows to the world. Therefore the Sages state that whoever properly enjoys Shabbat merits many blessings and is saved from evil (see also below, 7:1). One must spend as much as he can on Shabbat food, taking into account his weekday habits. In other words, he need not buy the most expensive foods in the market to honor Shabbat, but he must buy better food than what he and his family normally eat on a weekday. The specifics vary from family to family. It seems reasonable to suggest that one should spend twice as much on food for Shabbat as on food for a weekday. Those who go above and beyond spend even more, and they receive great reward for this.

Rav Eliezer Melamed (Peninei Halakhah, Shabbat 1:16)

Peninei Halakhah, Shabbat 1:16

The passage states that Shabbat reveals the unity underlying creation and reconciles the apparent opposition between body and soul, requiring enjoyment through both spiritual practices such as Torah and prayer and physical pleasures such as festive meals and sleep.

On Shabbat we connect with the Source of our life and thereby reveal that all creation has one root. Consequently, the world becomes more peaceful. The most profound opposition in the world is the dichotomy between the spiritual and the physical, between body and soul. When examined using “mundane eyes,” they appear to be fighting and interfering with one another. But on Shabbat it is revealed that the body and the soul complement one another, for the soul brings life and blessing to the body, while the body provides the soul with a way to express itself. Therefore, on Shabbat we are commanded to enjoy ourselves both physically and spiritually, through Torah study and prayer and through festive meals and sleep (see 2:5 below).

Reshimot Shiurim on Berakhot 27a:25

Reshimot Shiurim on Berakhot 27a:25

The passage questions the Tosafot’s comparison between Shabbat prayer and candle lighting, noting that candle lighting must neither precede nor follow its proper time because it fulfills Shabbat’s kavod and oneg and depends on the day’s sanctity, whereas prayer time depends on the daily offering, which according to Rabbi Yehudah may be brought only until plag haminchah.
