Bitul and Nullification in Kashrut Law

These sources establish the foundational principles of bitul—the nullification of prohibited food or taste—through quantitative and qualitative standards. The sources explain when a forbidden substance loses legal significance upon mixture with permitted food, including the sixty-to-one ratio and the distinction between absorbed taste and physical substance.

What the sources say

The technical core of bitul in kashrus is that a forbidden substance mixed into a permitted one loses its own halachic identity and is treated as absorbed into the majority, whether measured by taste as in Mishneh Torah, Forbidden Foods 15:1-3 and Shulchan Arukh, Yoreh De'ah 98:1, or by the sixty-to-one ratio discussed throughout Chullin 97b:1 and Chullin 98a:7.

This same language of bitul is taken up by Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 41:5 to describe the soul's faculties being absorbed and nullified into the corresponding divine attributes through Torah and mitzvot, so that the person, like the mixed substance, no longer registers as a separate entity.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 6:5 extends this further, teaching that the Divine Presence rests only on what is entirely batel to it, whether actually as with the angels or potentially as with every Jew who can nullify himself completely to God, framing bitul as the condition for closeness to the Shechinah.

Shem MiShmuel, Mishpatim 1:9 describes true avoda as a bitul in which a person acts on God's command alone, without regard to his own reasoning or preference, calling this the state in which Israel has no independent selfhood before God.

Sha'arei Teshuvah 1:23-24 describes the highest level of submission required for teshuva as one in which a person magnifies the service of God and holds his own deeds as small, concealing his honor rather than claiming credit for himself, a posture of self-effacement within avoda parallel to the nullification of the minor substance within the majority.

Taken together, the sources on the sheet show that bitul functions in both domains as the disappearance of an independent identity into a greater whole: in kashrus the forbidden substance loses its own status within the permitted majority as in Mishneh Torah, Forbidden Foods 15:1-3, while in avoda the person's own will and self-regard are meant to be similarly nullified within service of God as in Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 41:5 and Shem MiShmuel, Mishpatim 1:9.

Deuteronomy 8:2-3

Deuteronomy 8:2-3

The wilderness experience teaches Israel dependence on God rather than self-sufficiency: “not by bread alone,” a biblical foundation for avodah grounded in surrender and receptivity.

Chullin 97b

Chullin 97b:1

Discusses taste transmission and the method of evaluating prohibited flavor, providing a central Talmudic basis for the laws of נותן טעם and bitul in kashrut.

and the Sages said that there are cases where the mixture is permitted if there is sixty times as much permitted food as forbidden food. Therefore, in a case where the mixture is a type of food mixed with food not of its own type, so that there is a difference in taste between the two components, when there are Jews for whom the mixture is permitted, one relies on a Jew tasting the mixture. This is the halakha when teruma is cooked with non-sacred food. When the mixture is potentially forbidden, e.g., in the case of meat cooked with milk, one relies on a gentile cook to taste it. And if the mixture is composed of a type of food mixed with food of its own type, where one cannot ascertain whether the forbidden component has imparted flavor; or if it is composed of a type of food mixed with food not of its own type when the mixture may be forbidden and it is a case where there is no gentile cook available to taste it, the mixture is permitted if there is sixty times as much permitted food as forbidden food.

Chullin 98a

Chullin 98a:7

Analyzes the case of a piece of prohibited food falling into permitted food and the calculation of sixty, a central source for the practical mechanics of bitul.

§ The Gemara continues discussing the nullification of forbidden foods. There was once a certain olive-bulk of forbidden fat that fell into a pot of kosher meat. Rav Asi thought to measure the volume of the kosher meat together with that which the pot had absorbed. The Rabbis said to Rav Ashi: Is that to say that the pot absorbed the permitted meat but did not absorb the forbidden fat? The Gemara relates a similar incident: There was once a certain half-olive-bulk of forbidden fat that fell into a pot of kosher meat. Mar bar Rav Ashi thought to measure the amount of kosher meat needed to nullify the forbidden fat as thirty half-olive-bulks, rather than sixty. His father, Rav Ashi, said to him: Have I not told you: Do not treat measures lightly even with regard to rabbinic prohibitions? And furthermore, didn’t Rabbi Yoḥanan say: A half-measure is prohibited by Torah law? Consequently, the half-olive-bulk of forbidden fat is nullified only in sixty times its volume of permitted meat.

Avodah Zarah 73a

Avodah Zarah 73a:2

Develops the Talmudic rules of יין נסך and מינ במינו, including the relationship between quantitative nullification and the principle that a prohibited substance can sometimes remain legally significant despite mixture.

MISHNA: Wine used for a libation is forbidden, and any amount of it renders other wine forbidden if they are mixed together. Wine used for a libation that became mixed with wine, or water that was used for an idolatrous libation that became mixed with ordinary water, renders the mixture forbidden with any amount of the forbidden wine or water; but wine used for a libation that became mixed with water, or water used for a libation that became mixed with wine renders the mixture forbidden only if the forbidden liquid is sufficient to impart flavor to the mixture, i.e., for the wine to flavor the water or for the water to dilute the wine to an extent that can be tasted. This is the principle: A substance in contact with the same type of substance renders the mixture forbidden with any amount of the forbidden substance, but a substance in contact with a different type of substance renders the mixture forbidden only in a case where it imparts flavor to it.

Chullin 96b

Chullin 96b:6

Chachmei Bavel state that when a forbidden sciatic nerve, carcass piece, or non-kosher fish is cooked with permitted food, the mixture is forbidden when the forbidden item imparts flavor; if the item cannot be identified, all corresponding pieces are forbidden, while the broth is forbidden only when it receives the forbidden flavor.

MISHNA: In the case of a thigh that was cooked with the sciatic nerve in it, if there is enough of the sciatic nerve in it to impart its flavor to the thigh, the entire thigh is forbidden for consumption. How does one measure whether there is enough sciatic nerve to impart flavor to the meat of the entire thigh? One relates to it as though the sciatic nerve were meat imparting flavor to a turnip. If meat the volume of the sciatic nerve would impart flavor to a turnip the volume of the thigh when they were cooked together, then the entire thigh is forbidden. With regard to a sciatic nerve that was cooked with other sinews, when one identifies the sciatic nerve and removes it, the other sinews are forbidden if the sciatic nerve was large enough to impart flavor. And if he does not identify it, all the sinews are forbidden because each one could be the sciatic nerve; but the broth is forbidden only if the sciatic nerve imparts flavor to the broth. And similarly, in the case of a piece of an animal carcass or a piece of non-kosher fish that was cooked with similar pieces of kosher meat or fish, when one identifies the forbidden piece and removes it, the rest of the meat or fish is forbidden only if the forbidden piece was large enough to impart flavor to the entire mixture. And if he does not identify and remove the forbidden piece, all the pieces are forbidden, due to the possibility that each piece one selects might be the forbidden piece; but the broth is forbidden only if the forbidden piece imparts flavor to the broth.

Chullin 108a

Chullin 108a:2

Chachmei Bavel state that milk renders meat forbidden when it imparts flavor, and that the Torah prohibition applies to absorbed flavor even without the forbidden substance itself; they discuss Rabbi Yehuda’s view that a permitted substance of a different type can nullify the forbidden food in a mixture.

MISHNA: In the case of a drop of milk that fell on a piece of meat, if the drop contains enough milk to impart flavor to that piece of meat, i.e., the meat is less than sixty times the size of the drop, the meat is forbidden. If one stirred the contents of the pot and the piece was submerged in the gravy before it absorbed the milk, if the drop contains enough milk to impart flavor to the contents of that entire pot, the contents of the entire pot are forbidden. GEMARA: Abaye said: The principle that the flavor of a forbidden food renders prohibited the substance in which it is absorbed, and it is not necessary for there to be actual forbidden substance, applies by Torah law in general, and not just to the prohibition of meat cooked in milk. As Rava said: Rabbi Yehuda holds with regard to any tripartite mixture consisting of a forbidden type of food, a permitted food of the same type, and another food item that is permitted, one disregards the permitted food that is its own type as though it were not there, and if the permitted food that is not of its own type is more than the forbidden food, the permitted food nullifies the forbidden food. In the case Rav describes, although the other pieces of meat are of the same type as the piece that has become forbidden, the gravy in the pot is not of the same type, and it should nullify the forbidden piece. Since Rav does not mention this principle, he apparently disagrees with it.

Chullin 97a

Chullin 97a:4

Chachmei Bavel recount Rava’s resolution that a gentile cook may taste food to determine whether absorbed meat imparted flavor to milk, just as a priest may taste non-sacred food to assess absorbed teruma.

Rava said: Initially that which is taught in the following baraita posed a difficulty for me: With regard to a pot in which one cooked meat, one may not cook milk in it; and if he did cook milk in it, the meat absorbed by the pot renders the milk forbidden if it imparts flavor to the milk. Similarly, if one cooked teruma in a pot, one may not cook non-sacred food in it; and if one did cook non-sacred food in it, the absorbed teruma renders the food in the pot sacred if it imparts flavor to it. Rava explains: Granted, in the case of a pot used for teruma, a priest, who is permitted to partake of teruma, can taste the non-sacred food subsequently cooked in the pot in order to determine whether the teruma imparted flavor to the non-sacred food. But in a case where it is not known whether meat imparted flavor into milk, who can taste it? If the meat did impart flavor to the milk, it would be forbidden for any Jew to consume the milk. But now that Rabbi Yoḥanan said: We rely on a gentile cook in the case of the kilkhit, here also we rely on a gentile cook to taste it and say whether the meat has imparted flavor to the milk.

Zevachim 79a

Zevachim 79a:4

Chachmei Bavel state that mixtures are nullified according to taste when different types are combined, majority when like types are combined, and appearance where it is discernible; the passage contrasts this with the view that prohibited items do not nullify one another and connects that principle to Hillel’s practice of eating the Paschal offering, matzah, and maror together.

§ Rava says, in summary of these halakhot: The Sages said that the status of an item in a mixture is determined by the taste, i.e., if the taste of one substance is noticeable in a mixture with another substance it is not nullified, and the Sages said that a prohibited item is nullified by the majority, and the Sages also said that the status of an item in a mixture is determined by the appearance, i.e., if the appearance of a substance is recognizable in a mixture it is not nullified. Rava elaborates: With regard to a type of food mixed with food not of its own type, the nullification is determined by the taste. In the case of a type of food mixed with food of its own type, the nullification is determined by the majority. In a case where there is a possibility to determine the status of an item based on appearance, the nullification is by appearance. § The Gemara returns to its discussion of the opinion of Reish Lakish that prohibited items, such as piggul, notar, and ritually impure meat, nullify one another. The Gemara notes: And Reish Lakish disagrees with the statement of Rabbi Elazar, as Rabbi Elazar says: Just as items used in the performance of mitzvot do not nullify one another, despite the fact that one is of greater volume than the other or imparts flavor to it, so too, items to which prohibitions apply do not nullify one another. The Gemara adds: Whom did you hear who says that items used in the performance of mitzvot do not nullify one another? It is Hillel, as it is taught in a baraita: They said about Hillel the Elder that when eating the Paschal offering, matza, and bitter herbs on the first night of Passover, he would wrap them all at once and eat them together, because it is stated with regard to the Paschal offering: “They shall eat it with matzot and bitter herbs” (Numbers 9:11), which indicates that these three foods should be eaten together. Hillel was not concerned that the taste of the bitter herbs would nullify the taste of the matza.

Chullin 108b

Chullin 108b:9

Chachmei Bavel present a tannaitic dispute over milk absorbed in meat: Rabbi Yehuda considers the piece forbidden once it absorbs the milk and able to prohibit other same-type pieces, while the Rabbis require the milk to impart flavor throughout the gravy, spices, and other pieces; this reflects the view that an absorbent item that can be wrung remains prohibited.

§ The Gemara returns to the issue previously discussed: And the case of an item that can be wrung to remove an absorbed prohibited substance is itself the subject of a dispute between tanna’im, as it is taught in a baraita: If a drop of milk fell onto a piece of meat, once it imparts flavor to the piece, the piece itself is rendered non-kosher in its own right. And it therefore renders all the other pieces of meat in the pot prohibited, even if they combine to more than sixty times its size; this is because they are of the same type, and a type of food mixed with food of its own type is not nullified. This is the statement of Rabbi Yehuda. And the Rabbis say that even the original piece of meat is not prohibited unless there is enough milk to impart flavor even to the gravy and to the spices and to the other pieces of meat in the pot, since the milk is assumed to diffuse from the first piece until it is evenly distributed throughout the pot. The Gemara responds: Evidently, Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi maintains that an item that can be wrung remains prohibited. Once the first piece of meat absorbs the milk, it is considered non-kosher in its own right, and even after the milk itself is nullified, the flavor of the forbidden meat renders the rest of the pieces prohibited. The flavor of the meat cannot be nullified by the other meat in the pot, since a substance in contact with the same type of substance is not nullified, according to the opinion of Rabbi Yehuda.

Zevachim 79b

Zevachim 79b:1

Chachmei Bavel present a baraita stating that a broken flask containing zav or zava urine becomes pure after three washings with water, but remains impure even after ten fillings with pure urine because a substance is not nullified by the same type, while Rabbi Eliezer ben Yaakov permits it after the third filling.

§ The Gemara continues its discussion of cases involving a mixture of one substance in contact with the same type of substance, in which according to the opinion of Rabbi Yehuda in the mishna the prohibited substance is not nullified. The Sages taught a baraita (Tosefta, Teharot 5:3): In a case where a broken earthenware flask had absorbed the urine of a zav or a zava, whose urine is a primary source of ritual impurity, which imparts impurity to one who carries it, in such a case, if one poured water into this flask to clean it, after the first time and the second time one washed it, it remains ritually impure, but after the third time it is ritually pure, as the impure urine has been expelled from the flask. The baraita continues: In what case is this statement said? It is said when one placed water into the flask. But if he did not place water into it, but instead placed the urine of a ritually pure person into it, even after the tenth time he places this urine into the flask it remains ritually impure, as one substance in contact with the same type of substance is not nullified. Rabbi Eliezer ben Ya’akov says: After the third time, even though he did not place water into it, but rather urine, it is ritually pure. The Gemara comments: Whom did you hear who says that a substance in contact with the same type of substance is not nullified? Rabbi Yehuda, and therefore he is the first tanna of this baraita.

Pesachim 4b

Pesachim 4b:5

Chachmei Bavel explain that women, slaves, or minors are believed when they say they searched for chametz because the search is rabbinic, while Torah law is satisfied through bitul; Abaye adds that people prefer to perform the mitzvah themselves, even at their own expense.

The Gemara rejects this conclusion: No, actually I can say to you that on the fourteenth its presumptive status is that it has been searched, and with what case are we dealing here? This halakha is referring to a situation where our presumption is that the owner did not search the house, and these women, slaves, or minors say: We searched it. Lest you say that the Sages do not believe them, as they are unfit to testify, the baraita therefore teaches us that since the search for leavened bread is an ordinance by rabbinic law, as by Torah law mere nullification of one’s ownership before the prohibition of the leaven takes effect is sufficient, the Sages believe them with regard to an ordinance instituted by rabbinic law. The Gemara suggests: Come and hear a resolution to this dilemma, as Abaye said: Needless to say, that in a place where people typically do not pay a wage and hire others to conduct the search for leaven and everyone searches himself, a person prefers to fulfill the mitzva himself. However, even in a place where people pay a wage and have others search for leaven, it is not a mistaken transaction due to the fact that a person prefers to perform the mitzva with his own money. Consequently, it is not considered a mistaken transaction, as a person does not object to having to perform a mitzva.

Mishneh Torah, Forbidden Foods 15:1-3

Mishneh Torah, Forbidden Foods 15:1-3

Rambam codifies the laws of mixtures and explains when prohibited food or taste is nullified, organizing bitul around measurable impact and the nature of the mixture.

When a forbidden substance becomes mixed with a permitted substance of another type, [it causes it to become forbidden] if its flavor can be detected. When [a forbidden substance becomes mixed with a permitted substance of] the same type and it is impossible to detect [the forbidden substance] by its flavor, its presence becomes nullified if there is a majority [of the permitted substance]. What is implied? When the fat of the kidneys falls into beans and becomes dissolved, the beans should be tasted. If the taste of fat cannot be detected, they are permitted. If [not only] the taste, [but also] the substance of the fat is present, they are forbidden according to Scriptural Law. If the flavor could be detected, but there is no substance, they are forbidden by Rabbinic Law. What is meant by its substance? For example, there was enough forbidden fat for there to be an olive-sized portion [of fat] in each portion the size of three eggs from the mixture. If a person eats a portion of beans the size of three eggs, he is liable for lashes for they contain an olive-sized portion of forbidden fat, for [not only] the flavor, [but also] the substance of [the forbidden fat] is present. If one eats less than a portion the size of three eggs [of the mixture], one is liable for stripes for rebellious conduct as prescribed by Rabbinic Law. Similarly, if there was less than an olive-sized portion of [forbidden] fat in every portion the size of three eggs, even if the flavor of fat is detectable and he eats the entire pot, he is not liable for lashes [as prescribed by Scriptural Law], only stripes for rebellious conduct.

Shaarei Teshuvah, 1:23-24

Sha'arei Teshuvah 1:23-24

Yonah Gerondi describes the highest submission required for repentance as magnifying Torah and the service of God without taking personal credit, serving humbly and discreetly while avoiding honor or praise for one’s worthy deeds.

And know that there are many degrees of submission as will be explained in the Chapter on Humility (no longer extant), with God's help. But the highest level that is necessary for the path of repentance is that one aggrandize Torah and enhance it and not claim any benefit for himself. For it will all be small in his eyes compared to what he is obligated to do for the service of God. Therefore he will be submissive and serve with humility, and not desire honor for his honorable actions, nor glory for his glorious deeds. So he will conceal them [from his companions] according to his ability.

Rashba on Chullin 98a

Duties of the Heart, Third Treatise on Service of God 1:1

This treatise frames divine service as an inward, heart-centered obligation rather than mere external performance. It is highly relevant to Rabbi Yerucham's focus on inner work, sincerity, and avodah penimit.

Sefer HaChinukh, Mitzvah 113

Sefer HaChinukh 113:6

Discusses the prohibition of eating blood and its conceptual boundaries; it is useful for seeing how Torah prohibitions remain defined by their substantive legal identity even when physical perception changes.

And they were also stringent in this matter according to some of the commentators to [deduce] a novel prohibition in this, more than in other prohibitions of food (Chullin 108a). [It is] in that with the matter of meat with milk, if milk is mixed with meat, and there is not sixty parts in the piece of meat corresponding to the milk, we see both of them as one piece of prohibited food. And if this piece fell into a stew of meat or a stew of milk, we measure against all of [the piece]. And this is what, they, may their memory be blessed, said (Chullin 108a) “The piece itself becomes a carcass.” And the reason is because their mixture is what makes them prohibited. And hence, after they have mixed, behold, they are like a piece of carcass. And with other prohibitions, it is not such; as [with] prohibited food that is mixed with a piece of permissible food and there is not sixty parts in the permissible food to negate the prohibited food, and afterwards they fall into a stew, we only measure according to the measurement of the prohibited food that fell into it, and [the permissible portion of the piece] itself helps to [count against] the prohibited food. [This is] because that piece does not become a carcass, and [so] the permissible food in it is found to be like the rest of the permissible food in the stew — and [so] it assists [in counting against] the prohibited food. However if it is recognizable, the piece itself is forbidden forever, according to the opinion of some of the commentators.

Sefer HaTashbetz, Part IV 3:32

Sefer HaTashbetz, Part IV 3:32

Shimon ben Tzemach Duran states that refraining from giving even a child a taste of the kiddush wine overstates the concern and approaches a blessing in vain, but an established practice should not be abolished where doing so may cause dispute, since the prohibition of an unnecessary blessing is rabbinic.

Shulchan Arukh, Yoreh De'ah 98

Shulchan Arukh, Yoreh De'ah 98:1

Sets the practical framework for nullification of prohibited flavor in permitted food, including the familiar one-in-sixty rule and the distinction between actual substance and absorbed taste.

On the Mixing of Forbidden Food with Permitted Food and Dissolution When a forbidden food is mixed with a permitted food of a different nature, for example, when forbidden fat is mixed with meat, the mixture must be tasted by a gentile. If the gentile says that they do not detect the flavor of the forbidden food, or if they do detect it but find it altered, the mixture is permitted, provided that the forbidden food has not subsequently improved the taste of the mixture; but the gentile must not be made aware that their opinion is needed. If there is no gentile to taste the mixture, the permitted food must be sixty times the amount of the forbidden food. The same applies to a mixture of two foods, one forbidden and one permitted, but both of the same nature, making tasting ineffective; in this case, the permitted food must be sixty times the forbidden food. GLOSS: Nowadays it is customary not to have the mixture tasted by a gentile; it suffices to evaluate if the quantity of the permitted food is sixty times that of the forbidden food. When a forbidden food is cooked with a permitted food, or a forbidden food, visible and whole, is thrown out of the pot, the quantity of the permitted food must be sixty times that of the entire forbidden food, as it is impossible to evaluate the degree of flavor imparted to the mixture by the forbidden food. Consequently, when permitted foods are cooked in a pot that, on the same day, was used to prepare forbidden foods, the quantity of foods being cooked must be sixty times the weight of the pot. The same applies when, by mistake, a spoon that was used to prepare forbidden foods is dropped into a pot containing permitted foods; the quantity of the latter must be sixty times greater than the part of the spoon that came into contact with the forbidden foods. Indeed, it is impossible to evaluate the quantity of forbidden food absorbed by the pot or the spoon. The law makes no distinction regarding the material of the pot or the spoon; it does not matter whether these utensils are made of iron, clay, or wood. GLOSS: Sixty times the weight of the pot is only required in the case of absorption by this utensil of forbidden foods subjected to the action of fire. But if the absorption occurs due to salting, the foods being cooked need only be sixty times greater than the quantity obtained by scraping the inside of the pot. One author goes further. If the spoon is made of metal, the cooked food must, according to him, exceed the entire spoon by sixty times, even when only a part has been in contact with the permitted foods, metal being a good conductor of heat. GLOSS: We rely on the first opinion. A forbidden food can dissolve and lose its taste in a quantity sixty times greater of permitted foods; if this forbidden food is visible, it must be removed. Consequently, when a small quantity of forbidden fat falls and loses its taste in hot foods sixty times greater than this quantity, one must pour a little cold water into the pot; the fat naturally rises to the surface and solidifies. It is then considered as a visible food, which must be removed. A forbidden food mixed with a permitted food sixty times greater than the first falls into another pot: the quantity of the permitted food must then be sixty times greater than the forbidden food. If, however, the latter falls twice into the same pot, the permitted food need only be sixty times greater than the forbidden food once. (V. 94.)

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 1

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate III 1:6

Frames deveikut and the proper orientation of consciousness as attachment to God through Torah and mitzvot, providing a non-Chabad account of how selfhood is redirected and subordinated to divine reality.

For regarding the matter why He (blessed be He) is called Ma-kome, the sages (OBM) explained in Bereshit Rabba (parsha 68) on the verse “and he encountered the place-Ma-kome” (Bereshit 28:11): “Rav Hoona, in the name of Rav Ahmee, stated: ‘For what reason do we assign a name to the Holy One (blessed be He) and call him Ma-kome? Because He is the universe’s space, and the universe is not His space’.” And in Sh’mote Rabba (end of parsha 45), and in Tahn-khooma (parsha Tee-sa): “And God-YHV”H stated: ‘Behold a place with me’ (Shemot 33:21): Rav Yo-see bar Cha-lafta stated… : ‘My space is subordinate to me; I am not subordinate to my space’”, and so it states in Sho-kheir Tove, T’hillim, mizmor 90. And according to its plain meaning it desired to express that just as a physical place tolerates and supports any thing or object that is rested upon it, so too, according to this metaphor, the Creator, Master of All (blessed be His name), He is the true space that tolerates and preserves the existence of all the worlds and creations. For if (heaven forefend) His energy would depart from them for even one moment, the space where all the worlds persist and exist would be nullified, and as is stated (Nechemyah 9:6): “and You enliven them all”. And this is a cornerstone of the Jewish faith, as the RaMBa”M (OBM) wrote in the beginning of his book. For that reason, the Zohar calls the Master of All (blessed be His name) the “Soul-Neshama of All Souls-Neshama”.

Derekh Hashem, Part Four, On the Daily Order of Prayer:6

Ramhal explains that the mitzvah of tzitzit marks a person as God’s servant, reinforcing acceptance of His yoke and the responsibility to participate through Torah and mitzvot in repairing creation; Chazal therefore incorporated wrapping oneself in a tallit before prayer as a means of strengthening this commitment.

Malbim on Isaiah 32:17

Malbim on Isaiah 32:17

Malbim distinguishes between rational mitzvot, performed willingly because their benefit is understood and rewarded with peace, and chukim, performed as avodah without knowing their reasons and rewarded with lasting tranquility and security.

Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch

The passage distinguishes serving as carrying out the will of the one who commands from serving by using something for a particular purpose, and identifies the first sense with prayer and the service of the altar.

Derekh Chayyim 1:3

Derekh Chayyim 1:3

Maharal explains that “למען ייטב לך” means goodness naturally follows from serving Hashem, not that one should serve Him for reward; the primary avodah is to love Hashem for Himself, recognize His greatness and truth, and desire to perform His mitzvos, though serving for past or future benefit is still righteous.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 41

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 41:5

Describes serving God with humility and awe, with the person’s selfhood subordinated to divine purpose; this is a central Hasidic treatment of bitul as a middah and mode of avodah.

וְגַם יִתְבּוֹנֵן, אֵיךְ שֶׁאוֹר־אֵין־סוֹף בָּרוּךְ־הוּא, הַ״סּוֹבֵב כָּל עָלְמִין״ וּ״מְמַלֵּא כָּל עָלְמִין״, הוּא רָצוֹן הָעֶלְיוֹן, הוּא מְלוּבָּשׁ בְּאוֹתִיּוֹת וְחָכְמַת הַתּוֹרָה, אוֹ בְּצִיצִית וּתְפִלִּין אֵלּוּ, וּבִקְרִיאָתוֹ אוֹ בִּלְבִישָׁתוֹ הוּא מַמְשִׁיךְ אוֹרוֹ יִתְבָּרֵךְ עָלָיו, דְּהַיְינוּ עַל ״חֵלֶק אֱלוֹהַּ מִמַּעַל״ שֶׁבְּתוֹךְ גּוּפוֹ, לִיכָּלֵל וְלִיבָּטֵל בְּאוֹרוֹ יִתְבָּרֵךְ. וְדֶרֶךְ פְּרָט בִּתְפִילִּין, לִיבָּטֵל וְלִיכָּלֵל בְּחִינַת חָכְמָתוֹ וּבִינָתוֹ שֶׁבְּנַפְשׁוֹ הָאֱלֹהִית, בִּבְחִינַת חָכְמָתוֹ וּבִינָתוֹ שֶׁל אֵין־סוֹף בָּרוּךְ־הוּא, הַמְלוּבָּשׁוֹת דֶּרֶךְ פְּרָט בְּפָרָשִׁיּוֹת: ״קַדֶּשׁ״, ״וְהָיָה כִּי יְבִיאֲךָ״, דְּהַיְינוּ, שֶׁלֹּא לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בְּחָכְמָתוֹ וּבִינָתוֹ שֶׁבְּנַפְשׁוֹ, בִּלְתִּי לַה׳ לְבַדּוֹ, וְכֵן לִיבָּטֵל וְלִיכָּלֵל בְּחִינַת הַדַּעַת שֶׁבְּנַפְשׁוֹ, הַכּוֹלֵל חֶסֶד וּגְבוּרָה, שֶׁהֵן יִרְאָה וְאַהֲבָה שֶׁבְּלִבּוֹ, בִּבְחִינַת דַּעַת הָעֶלְיוֹן הַכּוֹלֵל חֶסֶד וּגְבוּרָה, הַמְלוּבָּשׁ בְּפָרָשִׁיּוֹת: ״שְׁמַע״, ״וְהָיָה אִם שָׁמוֹעַ״, וְהַיְינוּ כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב בְּשֻׁלְחָן עָרוּךְ: ״לְשַׁעְבֵּד הַלֵּב וְהַמּוֹחַ כוּ׳״;

He should also reflect how the light of the En Sof, blessed is He, which encompasses all worlds and pervades all worlds, which is identical with the Supernal Will, is clothed in the letters and wisdom of the Torah and in the tzitzit and the tefillin, and through his study or donning these latter he draws over himself His light, blessed be He, that is, over “the portion of G–dliness from above” which is within his body, that it may be absorbed and nullified in His light, blessed be He. Specifically, in the case of the tefillin, [he should intend] that the attributes of wisdom and understanding which are in his divine soul may be nullified and absorbed into the attributes of wisdom and understanding of the En Sof, blessed is He, which are clothed, in particular, in the chapters of קדש and והיה כי יביאך. That is to say that he should use his wisdom and understanding that are in his soul only for G–d alone. Similarly that the attribute of daat that is in his soul, which includes both chesed (kindness) and gevurah (sternness), i.e., fear and love, in his heart, be nullified and absorbed into the attribute of the Higher Knowledge, which contains chesed and gevurah, which is clothed in the chapters of שמע and והיה אם שמוע. This is what is written in the Shulchan Aruch: “That he make his heart and brain subservient to Him….”

Shem MiShmuel, Mishpatim 1:9

Shem MiShmuel, Mishpatim 1:9

The foundation and beginning of all commandments is accepting divine sovereignty by performing whatever one is commanded without rationalization or understanding the reason, like a servant obeying his master regardless of whether the act appears good or bad to him—and similarly, one must perform the commandments based on God's command alone, even if one's intellect suggests the matter is improper or will yield only harm.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 6:5

Defines the spiritual polarity between holiness and the kelipot and describes how a person’s inner orientation determines whether an element is absorbed into holiness or remains an independent opposing force.

For the holy side is nothing but the indwelling and extension of the holiness of the Holy One, blessed is He, and He dwells only on such a thing that abnegates itself completely to Him, either actually, as in the case of the angels above, or potentially, as in the case of every Jew down below, having the capacity to abnegate himself completely to the Holy One, blessed is He, through martyrdom for the sanctification of G–d. That is why our Sages have said that “Even when a single individual sits and engages in the Torah the Shechinah rests on him” and “On every gathering of ten [Jews] the Shechinah rests” always. However, that which does not surrender itself to G–d, but is a separate thing by itself, does not receive its vitality from the holiness of the Holy One, blessed is He, that is, from the very inner essence and substance of the holiness itself, but from “behind its back,” as it were, descending degree by degree, through myriads of degrees with the lowering of the worlds, by way of cause and effect and innumerable contractions, until the light and life is so diminished through repeated diminutions that it can be compressed and incorporated, in a state of exile as it were, within that separated thing, giving it vitality and existence ex nihilo, so that it does not revert to nothingness and nonexistence as it was before it was created.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 32:2

Presents self-nullification of ego through love of fellow Jews: the body and external differences recede before the shared divine soul, offering a direct avodah parallel to bitul.

For, whereas one despises and loathes one’s body, while as for the soul and spirit, who can know their greatness and excellence in their root and source in the living G–d? Being, moreover, all of a kind and all having one Father—therefore, all Israelites are called real brothers by virtue of the source of their souls in the One G–d; only the bodies are separated. Hence in the case of those who give major consideration to their bodies while regarding their souls as of secondary importance, there can be no true love and brotherhood among them, but only [a love] which is dependent on a [transitory] thing. This is what Hillel the Elder meant when he said in regard to the fulfillment of this commandment, “This is the whole Torah, while the rest is but commentary,” and so on. For the basis and root of the entire Torah are to raise and exalt the soul high above the body, reaching to the Source and Root of all the worlds, and also to bring down the Light of the En Sof, blessed is He, upon the community of Israel, as will be explained later, i.e., into the fountainhead of the souls of all Israel, to become “One into One.” This is impossible if there is, G–d forbid, disunity among the souls, for the Holy One, blessed is He, does not dwell in an imperfect place, as we pray, “Bless us, our Father, all of us as one, with the light of Your Countenance,” as has been explained at great length elsewhere.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 35:9

Explains how divine presence is revealed when the forces opposing holiness are subdued, linking bittul of the opposing self to the revelation of holiness.

However, in order to draw the light and effulgence of the Shechinah also over his body and animal soul, i.e., on the vital spirit clothed in the physical body, he needs to fulfill the practical commandments which are performed by the body itself. For then the very energy of the body itself which is engaged in this action is absorbed in the Divine light and in His will and is united with Him in a perfect union. This is the third garment of the divine soul. Thereby also the energy of the vital spirit in the physical body, originating in the kelipat nogah, is transformed from evil to good and is actually absorbed into holiness like the divine soul itself, since it is this [animal soul] that carries out and performs the act of the commandment, because without it the divine soul could not have been acting through the body at all, for it is spiritual while the body is material and coarse. The intermediary linking them is the vital animal soul, which is clothed in the human blood, in the heart, and in all the body. And although the essence and substance of the animal soul in his heart, namely its evil dispositions, have not yet been absorbed into holiness, nevertheless since they have submitted to holiness and, albeit unwillingly, respond “Amen” and agree and are reconciled to perform the commandment under the preponderance of the divine soul in his brain which rules the heart, and, in the meantime, these [evil dispositions] are in a state of exile or slumber, as it were, as discussed above—therefore, this is no obstacle to the suffusion of the Shechinah over the human body at such time.

Shem MiShmuel, Vayakhel 2:10

Shem MiShmuel, Vayakhel 2:10

Shem Mishmuel explains that being “sanctified” through mitzvot means becoming exclusively designated for divine service, including directing permitted worldly activities toward that service, gradually distancing oneself from personal and worldly concerns to draw closer to God.

Sefat Emet, Leviticus, Vayikra 2:2

Develops the Hasidic idea that Israel’s holiness is revealed through attachment and self-nullification before God, especially in the context of sacrificial service and the inner work of approaching the Divine.

"He will bring it on his own will” (Vayikra 1:3). The Gemara (Rosh Hashanah 6a) explains this means a person can be forced to bring his offering until he says, “I want to bring it.” This teaches that if someone desires to be under Hashem's rule, he can ensure he is compelled from Heaven to fulfill this, as long as he wills it. Everything depends on a person's will.
