Redemption of Land, People, and Nation

Biblical and rabbinic sources envision Israel's redemption as a comprehensive restoration: the ingathering of the dispersed Jewish people to their ancestral land, the spiritual and physical renewal of the land itself, the unification of the nation under one covenant, and the sanctification of God's name through this restoration.

What the sources say

The prophetic vision of geulah is threefold, encompassing land, people, and nation: Yeshayahu 11:11-12 speaks of God gathering the dispersed of Israel and Judah from the four corners of the earth, while Yechezkel 37:22 envisions them made into one nation under one king, and Yeshayahu 60:1-22 adds that the people, all righteous, shall possess the land forever.

This ingathering is bound up with teshuvah, as Devarim 30:1-2 conditions the return from exile on turning back to God, and Mishneh Torah, Repentance 7:5 states that Israel is redeemed only through repentance, which the Torah promised would occur at the end of their exile.

The redemption of the nation is inseparable from the land itself, since Mishneh Torah, Melachim and Wars 11:1 describes the messianic king as one who restores the kingdom of David, builds the Temple, and gathers the dispersed of Israel, and Netzach Yisrael 1:2 explains that exile is itself an unnatural displacement of the nation from the place appointed for it, the Land of Israel, so that the very fact of exile proves the necessity of return.

Chazal likewise link the redemption of Jerusalem and the nation to conduct and merit, as Sanhedrin 98a records that the flourishing of the land is a sign of approaching redemption and that Jerusalem is redeemed only through righteousness, while Ketubot 111a discusses the oaths restricting Israel's return to the land before its appointed time.

Rashi (Devarim 30:3) reads the wording of the verse to teach that the Divine Presence itself dwells with Israel in their exile and returns with them at the ingathering of exiles, tying the fate of the Shechinah to that of the people and the land together, as Rashi (Devarim 30:3) states.

Teshuvos V'hanhagos (3:140) addresses the topic that redemption entails an obligation to sing, and that full joy and enthusiasm are not yet complete in the present exile and concealment, with the complete new song awaited for the future redemption and its wonders.

Divrei Yatziv (Likutim 87) addresses the topic of a specific dating of a redemption of Israel by God in the year 5736, tied to a numerical association with a phrase referencing the God of Israel's hosts.

Tzitz Eliezer (10:1) addresses the topic of whether the renewed conquest and settlement of Eretz Yisrael after the Six-Day War restores or establishes the sanctity of the land for Torah-level obligations such as terumot and maasrot, proposing that a conquest by at least 600,000 Jews on behalf of the nation may achieve this sanctity even absent a king or prophet.

Isaiah 60:1-22

This chapter depicts Jerusalem restored and radiant, with exiles returning and nations contributing to the rebuilding and flourishing of Zion.

Jeremiah 31:9-16

Jeremiah 31:9-16

Jeremiah portrays the return of Israel as a renewed national procession to the land, accompanied by consolation, agricultural abundance, and restoration of the people.

They shall come with weeping, And with compassion will I guide them. I will lead them to streams of water, By a level road where they will not stumble. For I am ever a Father to Israel, Ephraim is My first-born. Hear the word of GOD, O nations, And tell it in the isles afar. Say: The One who scattered Israel will gather them, And will guard them as a shepherd his flock. For GOD will ransom Jacob, Redeem him from one too strong for him.

Sanhedrin 98a

Sanhedrin 98a:3

The sugya discusses messianic redemption, including the possibility that redemption unfolds through repentance, merit, or an appointed historical process.

§ And Rabbi Abba says: You have no more explicit manifestation of the end of days than this following phenomenon, as it is stated: “But you, mountains of Israel, you shall give your branches, and yield your fruit to My people of Israel, for they will soon be coming” (Ezekiel 36:8). When produce will grow in abundance in Eretz Yisrael, it is an indication that the Messiah will be coming soon. Rabbi Eliezer says: You have no greater manifestation of the end of days than this following phenomenon as well, as it is stated: “For before these days there was no hire for man, nor any hire for beast; nor was there peace from the oppressor to him who exits and to him who enters” (Zechariah 8:10). When there are no wages for work and no rent paid for use of one’s animal, that is an indication that the coming of the Messiah is at hand. Ulla says: Jerusalem is redeemed only by means of righteousness, as it is stated: “Zion shall be redeemed with justice and those who return to it with righteousness” (Isaiah 1:27). Rav Pappa says: If the arrogant will cease to exist, the Persian sorcerers will cease to exist as well. If the deceitful judges will cease to exist, the royal officers [gazirpatei] and taskmasters will cease to exist. Rav Pappa elaborates: If the arrogant will cease, the Persian sorcerers will cease, as it is written: “And I will purge away your dross [sigayikh] as with lye, and I will remove all your alloy [bedilayikh].” When the arrogant [sigim] are purged, the sorcerers, who are separated [muvdalim] from the fear of God, will also cease. And if the deceitful judges cease to exist, the royal officers and taskmasters will cease to exist, as it is written: “The Lord has removed your judgments; cast out your enemy” (Zephaniah 3:15). And Rabbi Yoḥanan says: The son of David will come only in a generation that is entirely innocent, in which case they will be deserving of redemption, or in a generation that is entirely guilty, in which case there will be no alternative to redemption. He may come in a generation that is entirely innocent, as it is written: “And your people also shall be all righteous; they shall inherit the land forever” (Isaiah 60:21). He may come in a generation that is entirely guilty, as it is written: “And He saw that there was no man, and was astonished that there was no intercessor; therefore His arm brought salvation to Him, and His righteousness, it sustained Him” (Isaiah 59:16). And it is written: “For My own sake, for My own sake will I do it; for how should it be profaned? And My glory I will not give it to another” (Isaiah 48:11).

Ketubot 111a

Ketubot 111a:1

The discussion of the oaths surrounding exile and return presents a major rabbinic framework for the relationship between the Jewish people, the Land of Israel, and the process of redemption.

“They shall be taken to Babylonia and there they shall remain until the day that I recall them, said the Lord” (Jeremiah 27:22). Based on that verse, Rav Yehuda held that since the Babylonian exile was imposed by divine decree, permission to leave Babylonia for Eretz Yisrael could be granted only by God. The Gemara asks: And how does Rabbi Zeira interpret that verse? The Gemara answers that Rabbi Zeira maintains that that verse is written about the Temple service vessels, and it does not refer to the Jewish people, as the previous verse states: “Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, concerning the vessels that remain in the house of the Lord” (Jeremiah 27:21). Consequently, Rabbi Zeira sought to ascend to Eretz Yisrael. The Gemara asks: And how does Rav Yehuda respond to this argument? The verse is clearly referring to the Temple vessels, not to the people. The Gemara answers that another verse is written: “I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles and by the hinds of the field, that you not awaken or stir up love, until it please” (Song of Songs 2:7). Rabbi Yehuda derived from here that no act of redemption should be performed until a time arrives when it pleases God to bring about the redemption. The Gemara asks: And how does Rabbi Zeira explain the repetition of this oath in these verses? The Gemara explains: That verse is necessary for that which was taught by Rabbi Yosei, son of Rabbi Ḥanina, who said: Why are these three oaths (Song of Songs 2:7, 3:5, 8:4) needed? One, so that the Jews should not ascend to Eretz Yisrael as a wall, but little by little. And another one, that the Holy One, Blessed be He, adjured the Jews that they should not rebel against the rule of the nations of the world. And the last one is that the Holy One, Blessed be He, adjured the nations of the world that they should not subjugate the Jews excessively.

Sifrei Devarim 43

Sifrei Devarim 43:13

The passage recounts how Rabbi Akiva comforted mourners over Jerusalem’s desolation by interpreting the fulfillment of Uriah’s prophecy of destruction as evidence that Zechariah’s prophecy of Jerusalem’s future restoration will also be fulfilled.

Further, another time— they were ascending to Jerusalem. When they reached Tzofim, they tore their garments. When they reached the Mount of the Abode, they saw a fox leaving the Most Holy Domain. They began to weep, but R. Akiva laughed. They said to him: Akiva! You are always a puzzle! For we are in tears, while you laugh! He replied to them: But why are you in tears? They said to him: Shouldn’t we weep for the place of which it is written: “And the foreigner who draws near will be put to death” (Nu. 1:51)— yet now a fox emerges from it? Through us has the meaning of this verse become clear: “For this our heart is pining away . . . for the ruin of Mt. Zion, in which foxes run” (Lam. 5:17-18). He replied to them: That’s why I’m laughing! Look at what He says: “I will bring testimony from reliable witnesses— Uriah the Priest and Zechariah b. Yevorachiah . . . I was intimate with the Prophetess, who conceived and bore a son . . . And before that boy can say ‘Mother’ or ‘Father’, the wealth of Damascus and the spoils of Samaria . . . will be carried off before the king of Assyria!” (Is. 8:2). Now, you might ask: What does Uriah have to do with Zechariah? What did Uriah say?— “Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem shall be in ruins, and the Mount of the Abode like forested hills (Jer. 26:18). What did Zechariah say? “Thus says HASHEM of Retinues! Elders and wise women will sit in the boulevards of the city” (Zekh. 8:4). Said the All-Present: These are my two witnesses! If the predictions of Uriah come true, the predictions of Zechariah will also come true, and if the predictions of Uriah are foiled, the predictions of Zechariah will also be foiled. I am laughing because the prediction of Uriah came true. Ultimately, then, the prediction of Zechariah will also come true! With this phrase, they replied: Akiva,! You have consoled us!

Sotah 49b

Berakhot 12b

Berakhot 12b:26

Chachmei Bavel report that Ben Zoma argued the exodus from Egypt will not be mentioned in the messianic era, based on Jeremiah’s prophecy, while the Sages explained that it will remain secondary to the primary redemption from the subjugation of the kingdoms.

GEMARA: The fundamental dispute between Ben Zoma and the Sages appears in the mishna, and the baraita cites its continuation. Disputing the position of the Sages that: All the days of your life, refers to both this world and the days of the Messiah, it was taught in a baraita that Ben Zoma said to the Sages: And is the exodus from Egypt mentioned in the days of the Messiah? Was it not already said that Jeremiah prophesied that in the days of the Messiah: “Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, that they will no longer say: The Lord lives Who brought up the children of Israel out of the Land of Egypt. Rather: As the Lord lives, that brought up and led the seed of the house of Israel up out of the north country and from all the countries where I had driven them” (Jeremiah 23:7–8). The Sages rejected this claim and they said to him that these verses do not mean that in the future the exodus from Egypt will be uprooted from its place and will be mentioned no more. Rather, redemption from the subjugation of the kingdoms will be primary and the exodus from Egypt will be secondary.

Gittin 8b

Gittin 8b:4

Chachmei Bavel explain that purchasing a field in Syria is treated like purchasing land near Jerusalem, allowing a bill of sale to be written through a gentile even on Shabbat because the Sages suspended the usual rabbinic prohibition for the mitzvah of settling Eretz Yisrael.

The baraita further teaches: And one who purchases a field in Syria is like one who purchases a field in the outskirts of Jerusalem. The Gemara asks: With regard to which halakha was this stated? What practical ruling is taught by this statement? Rav Sheshet says: This serves to say that one writes a bill of sale [ono] for this purchase, and one may write a bill of sale even on Shabbat. The Gemara asks: Can it enter your mind that one may write this bill of sale on Shabbat? Writing on Shabbat is a prohibited labor for which one is liable to receive court-imposed capital punishment. The Gemara explains: This is as Rava says with regard to a similar issue, that one tells a gentile that he should do it, and he does so. Here too, it is referring to a situation where one tells a gentile that he should write a bill of sale, and he does so. And even though the halakha generally is that telling a gentile to perform an action that is prohibited for a Jew on Shabbat violates a rabbinic decree, since the Sages prohibited instructing a gentile to perform prohibited labor on behalf of a Jew on Shabbat, here the Sages did not impose this decree, due to the mitzva of settling Eretz Yisrael.

Esther Rabbah 10

Esther Rabbah 10:13

The passage interprets Vayikra 25:47–49 as foretelling Israel’s redemption from Haman: Ahasuerus sold Israel to Haman, while Mordekhai and Esther brought their deliverance, and the destruction of Amalek is understood as beginning in this world and being completed in the World to Come.

Rabbi Berekhya said: The Holy one blessed be He recorded the redemption of Israel in the Torah, as it is written: “If a stranger who is a resident among you shall prosper…” (Leviticus 25:47). “A stranger who is a resident” – that is Haman, who became great and grew rich, and became prosperous enough to weigh out ten thousand talents of silver (see Esther 3:9). He is called a resident stranger since he was a descendant of Amalek and was a stranger in Media and Persia. “And your brother becomes poor with him” (Leviticus 25:47) – these are [the people of] Israel who were destitute and poor. “And is sold to a resident stranger” (Leviticus 25:47) – that Aḥashverosh sold them to Haman, to destroy, to kill and to eliminate. “Or to an offshoot [eker] of a stranger’s family” (Leviticus 25:47) – that he made himself an object of idolatry. That is what is written: “Bowing and prostrating themselves to Haman” (Esther 3:2). “After he is sold, he shall have redemption” (Leviticus 25:48) – that the Holy One blessed be He redeemed them from his [Haman’s] hand and delivered them from his decree and rescued them. “One of his brothers shall redeem him” (Leviticus 25:48) – that is Mordekhai, as it is written about him “and accepted by most of his brethren” (Esther 10:3). “Or his uncle or his cousin shall redeem him” (Leviticus 25:49) – that is Esther, who was the daughter of his [Mordekhai’s] uncle, and Israel were redeemed by her. “For I will surely erase [maḥo emḥeh] the memory of Amalek” (Exodus 17:14) – erase [maḥo] in this world, surely erase [emḥeh] in the World to Come. “The memory [zekher] of Amalek” – that is Haman. Read with regard to him, “a male [zakhar] of Amalek.” Even Jacob our forefather alluded to it in the blessing of the tribes: “Benjamin, a wolf who will take prey. In the morning he will consume plunder” (Genesis 49:27) – that is Saul, who was the morning of Israel, as he was the first of the kings and was from the tribe of Benjamin, and [he] smote Amalek and plundered everything they had. “And in the evening will distribute booty” (Genesis 49:27) – that is Mordekhai and Esther, who arose for Israel in their exile, which resembles the evening, and distributed the booty of Haman. [Benjamin] is compared to a wolf, as the Holy One blessed be He set him to stand against the wolf – that is the kings of Media and Persia, who are compared to a wolf. That is what is written, “And behold, another beast, a second one, resembling a wolf” (Daniel 7:5). There they say that [the verse refers to] the kings of Media and Persia, who eat like a bear and have no rest like a bear and grow their hair like a bear. The Holy One blessed be He set Mordekhai and Esther to stand against them, as they were from the tribe of Benjamin, as it is written: “A wolf will take prey” (Genesis 49:27).

Rashi explains that the wording indicates the Shechinah shares Israel’s suffering in exile and returns with them at redemption; alternatively, it highlights the difficulty and greatness of gathering each exile individually, as reflected in the ingathering of Israel and other nations.

Sforno on Genesis 28:13

Sforno on Genesis 28:13

Q — How should we read the sequence in Yaakov's dream-vision — "והיה זרעך כעפר הארץ ופרצת ימה וקדמה וצפונה ונגבה... כי לא אעזבך" — multiplication, then expansion, then divine accompaniment? Why this specific order?

A — For Sforno the verse encodes Jewish history in two stages. "כעפר הארץ" doesn't mean "as numerous as the dust" but as *trampled* as the dust — "ותשימי כארץ גוך וכחוץ לעוברים" (Yeshayahu 51:23) — the depth of galut, "בתכלית השפלות." Only AFTER this descent does "ופרצת" arrive — the geulah breaks forth in all four directions, "כי אמנם תשועת האל העתידה תהיה אחר רוב שפלות ישראל ההוה היום בגלותם אשר כמוהו לא נהיה" (Sanhedrin 98a: "אם ראית דור שצרות רבות באות עליו כנהר, חכה לו"). The "כי לא אעזבך" is the guarantee that sustains us *through* the galut so we survive to see the geulah. And after geulah Hashem upgrades from "לא אעזבך" to "והתהלכתי בתוככם" — from non-abandonment to active companionship.

Crescas explains that the resurrection will include the completely righteous and completely wicked, who will thereby receive eternal life or eternal disgrace, while intermediate people will receive their reward of the soul; thus divine justice is fulfilled through the combined measure of physical and spiritual reward, and “all Israel have a share in the World to Come” may refer either to most Israelites or to an inherited promise in the Torah.

Netzach Yisrael 1

Netzach Yisrael 1:2

The Maharal explains exile and redemption as expressions of the metaphysical order of Israel's national existence, with geulah restoring Israel to its proper form and relationship with the land.

There is another reason to explain the concept of exile first. The exile itself is proof and clear imperative for redemption. This is because there is no doubt that exile is an alteration and departure from the normal order. The Blessed Holy One arranged each nation in the place which is appropriate for it, so he arranged the People of Israel into the place which is appropriate for it, namely the Land of Israel. Exile from their place is a complete alteration and departure [from that order]. Anything which departs from its natural place, which is outside its place, is unable to stay in the place which is not natural for it. Rather they need to return to their natural place. Because if they remain in a place which is unnatural for them, then the unnatural would become natural. And it is impossible for the unnatural to become natural. A metaphor: it is like trying to force fire to stay down, when it's natural state is to rise - or like trying to hold up solid matter, when its natural state is to fall to the earth. If you could achieve that, then you would be making the unnatural natural. Similarly with the People of Israel themselves. If they were to stay in exile for ever, which is not the right place for them to be (since the right place for them, according to the order of existence, is the Land of Israel under their own sovereignty and not under the sovereignty of any other). Just like everything in natural existence, each one has its own place as our sages decreed (Pirkei Avot 4:3) "There is nothing which does not have its place". Each thing under its own sovereignty. If they would remain in exile forever, then this thing (unnaturally standing outside their place) would become natural. Only natural things can stand permanently, because the nature which the Blessed Holy One gave to each thing is what sustains it such that it is established to stand forever. If an unnatural state of affairs were to exist forever, even though it was not according to the order and nature of existence, then the nature of that thing would be loosened and nullified completely for no purpose, and such a thing could not happen. Similarly, dispersal is not a natural state of affairs. Just as each thing returns to its place, so dispersed and separated parts have to return to [become] one entity. This is clear to anyone of intelligence, that all parts have one essence to them. If so, why would there be a division between them, and not unity, since they are one thing? Therefore all dispersal stands only to be coalesced together. Therefore the dispersal of the People of Israel among the nations is a thing which exists outside of nature, since (the People of Israel) is one nation, suitable to be standing together as one, as is found in the case of all natural things which are not divided into two. Rather that they should be joined together. Similarly "All the rivers flow into the sea" (Kohelet 1:7) to be gathered together. One thing is not divided. So since the Jewish nation is a nation united more than any other nation, not divided or separated , it is appropriate that they should be gathered together. From this we can see that dispersal is particularly unnatural for them. It is impossible to say that this state of affairs is only because of sin and iniquity, after all the dispersal of the People of Israel is so unnatural, because if this were to become permanent, then the unnatural would have to become natural.

Maamar HaGeulah, Peticha 1:2

Maamar HaGeulah, Peticha 1:2

Ramhal’s passage describes Israel’s confidence in attaining complete redemption, saying that during the apparent concealment of the Divine presence, vast stores of blessing and precious treasures were prepared for them and will be opened and bestowed upon them when the future era of great rest arrives, as a reward for their labor in exile.

Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 5 11:1

Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 5 11:1

Ramhal explains that whatever was damaged and corrupted during the exile will be repaired in the redemption, even more completely than before, so that the Shechinah will be restored and adorned beyond its original state; he interprets “Lecha Dodi, netzeh hasadeh” as the Shechinah inviting the Holy One to leave the exile and enter the upper place of joy and delight.

Derekh Chayyim 5:9

Maharal describes the first of three qualities of Eretz Yisrael: it is called the land of God, and dwelling there is portrayed as accepting God as one’s Elokim, whereas being driven from it is likened to being told to serve other gods.

Or Hachaim describes the present exile as Israel’s subjugation and degradation among all seventy nations, and promises that the nation’s future redemption will occur through extraordinary, universally public miracles rather than like the Exodus from Egypt, with kings bowing before them.

Haamek Davar on Leviticus 25:24

Netziv explains that even land sold to a non-Jew must be redeemed so it will not be worked during shemitah; although ordinary redemption is the duty of relatives, redeeming land from a non-Jewish buyer is a mitzvah, applying when the rest of the land is in Jewish possession.

Ramchal

Ramchal

The passage states that the messianic era will bring a great rectification of the body alongside the soul’s rectification, restoring the world from humanity’s primordial sin; the purified bodies of Israel will radiate through the revelation of the hidden light once evil and the wicked no longer remain.

recovered from “Sefat Emet on the Torah, Devarim Nitzavim 1”

Sefat Emet, Deuteronomy, Nitzavim

Sefat Emet, Deuteronomy, Nitzavim:5

The passage discusses how the redemption and vitality of the Jewish people comes from maintaining an inner connection to God while restraining worldly desires, allowing the inherent love of God implanted in every Jewish soul to naturally emerge.

Shem MiShmuel, Rosh Hashanah 3

Shem MiShmuel, Rosh Hashanah 3:2

The Shem MiShmuel explores national renewal and the restoration of Israel's spiritual unity through the themes of judgment, repentance, and redemption associated with Rosh Hashanah.

Likkutei Sichos 9

The passage teaches from “ושב ה' אלקיך” that the Shechinah is present with Israel in the suffering of their exile.

In this sichaThe sicha analyzes Rashi's commentary on the verse 'ושב ה' אלקיך את שבותך', explaining that the term 'ושב' (and He will return) rather than 'והשיב' (and He will bring back) teaches that God dwells with Israel in exile and is, so to speak, redeemed along with them. The discourse resolves several textual difficulties in Rashi, distinguishing between God's general empathy with Israel's suffering and this unique dimension of shared exile and redemption. Ultimately, this reveals the deep, intrinsic bond between God and the Jewish people, which guarantees the ultimate personal and collective redemption of every Jew.

Shem MiShmuel, Passover 18:4

Shem Mishmuel maps four expressions onto four stages—this world, the messianic era, resurrection, and the World to Come—describing struggle against evil, purification of Israel, profound attachment to God after the bodies are refined, and finally direct instruction and communion with God without an intermediary.

Rav Eliezer Melamed (Peninei Halakhah, Zemanim 4:2)

Peninei Halakhah, Zemanim 4:2

The passage cites the prophets’ promises that Israel would return from exile, rebuild and inhabit its land, cultivate it, and remain there, and presents the ingathering of exiles and the land’s renewal as a miraculous fulfillment of those promises and the beginning of geulah.

The prophets of Israel prophesied, in God’s name, that the exile will eventually end: “I will take you from among the nations and gather you from all the countries, and I will bring you back to your own land” (Yeḥezkel 36:24); “They shall build houses and dwell in them; they shall plant vineyards and enjoy their fruit” (Yeshayahu 65:21); “Again you shall plant vineyards on the hills of Samaria; Men shall plant and live to enjoy them” (Yirmiyahu 31:4); “And the desolate land, after lying waste in the sight of every passerby, shall again be tilled. And men shall say, ‘That land, once desolate, has become like the Garden of Eden; and the cities, once ruined, desolate, and ravaged, are now populated and fortified” (Yeḥezkel 36:34-35); “I will restore My people Israel. They shall rebuild ruined cities and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine; they shall till gardens and eat their fruits. And I will plant them upon their soil, nevermore to be uprooted from the soil I have given them – said the Lord your God” (Amos 9:14-15). However, after so many years passed without God’s word coming to fruition, God’s name became increasingly desecrated in the world, and the enemies of Israel decided that there is no chance that the Jews would ever return to their land. Even the Sages spoke in hyperbole about the miracle of the ingathering of the exiles, to the point that they said, “The ingathering of the exiles is as great as the day upon which the heaven and earth were created” (Pesaḥim 88a). But a miracle occurred, and God fulfilled His promise, causing an enormous and awesome kiddush Hashem (sanctification of God’s name). This kiddush Hashem became amplified even further during the Six-Day War, when Jerusalem was reunified and the holy cities within Judea and Samaria were recaptured. This process – the ingathering of the exiles and the blooming of the wasteland – which gained tremendous momentum when the State was established, marks the beginning of the redemption. As R. Abba said, “There is no clearer sign of the end of the exile than this verse: ‘But you, O mountains of Israel, shall yield your produce and bear your fruit for My people Israel, for their return is near’ (Yeḥezkel 36:8) (San. 98a).” Rashi comments, “When Eretz Yisrael yields its fruit in abundance, the End will be near, and there is no clearer sign of the end of the exile.”

Rav Kook presents the Land of Israel as organically bound to the life, holiness, and national renewal of Israel, rather than merely as a place of individual religious refuge.

Orot, Lights from Darkness, Israel and its Rebirth 1-3

Rav Kook analyzes the revival of Jewish national life, portraying the return to the land and the rebuilding of national institutions as stages in a broader redemptive process.

Otzrot HaRaayah, Volume 6, Part א 68:6

Kook expresses hope that following this course will make them bearers of God’s Torah and leading voices in the future national movement, and that the light of repentance—the key to redemption—will soon appear, bringing honor to Israel and guiding decisions for the welfare of God’s people and the Land of Israel.

Rav Kook (Ein Aya, Berakhot 1:9)

Ein Aya, Berakhot 1:9

Kook’s passage states that the future redemption and divine presence are delayed until three deficiencies are repaired: the foundations are securely established through suffering in exile and genuine repentance, the unworthy are removed and the worthy refined, and all breaches are mended so that the nations cannot allege desecration of God’s name.

Rav Kook (Ein Aya, Shabbat 3:2)

Ein Aya, Shabbat 3:2

The passage states that the purpose of Israel's connection to Eretz Yisrael is for Israel to become one nation whose Divine glory is manifest through God's hand in its history, serving as the sole source from which humanity draws knowledge of God's ways as a complete moral system applicable to both individual conduct and the conduct of nations; this requires that the Divine seal be placed upon the nation as a whole so it knows itself distinguished among peoples as God's people in God's land, and though in Babylon Israel's spirit strengthened and Judaism was founded on the basis of Torah's holiness (from which great Torah centers emerged), only when this consciousness is fully internalized will the nation be able to return to its place and land in full strength, at which time God will remember His people in a general way and raise a banner before the nations.

Kook’s passage envisions the return of scattered communities and lost “flocks” from exile, joined by a new force, with awakened spirit restoring inner unity, peace, justice, and righteousness within Israel.

Otzrot HaRaayah, Volume 6, Part ב 108:13

Kook states that nearly every kabbalistic work discusses Eretz Yisrael and redemption, since Kabbalah looks beyond the flawed present toward a perfected and holy future; he especially notes that the Zohar contains almost no section without discussion of redemption and Eretz Yisrael.

Rav Mordechai Eliyahu (Shut HaRav HaRashi 21:50)

Shut HaRav HaRashi 21:50

Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu states that the Shechinah has returned from exile with the Jewish people’s return to Eretz Yisrael, and that most Jews have gathered there in the present generation; he calls for blessing over the ingathering of its children and concluding with “Who gladdens Zion through her children.

We have a claim against the Almighty. He has dispersed us in the lands of the Diaspora, but He has promised us that He will lead us out of exile. He has promised that He will lead us back to the Land of Israel and restore it to us in its entirety.

Contemporary Halakhic Problems, Vol I, Part I, CHAPTER I Israel

The passage presents study as expressing a continuing desire for redemption from exile and appreciation of aliyah, identifies the establishment of a Jewish commonwealth after crossing the Jordan as fulfillment of a biblical commandment, and asks whether that commandment remains binding after the Temple’s destruction and subsequent exile.

Such study bore eloquent testimony not only to an unabated desire for redemption from exile, but also to an appreciation of the ultimate goal of aliyah. The establishment of a Jewish commonwealth following the crossing of the Jordan by our ancestors constituted the fulfillment of a biblical commandment. But does this commandment retain its binding force throughout the epoch following the destruction of the Temple and subsequent exile?
