Redemption of Land, People, and Individual

These sources explore whether the redemption of Eretz Yisrael, the Jewish people as a whole, and the individual Jew represent a single unified process or distinct dimensions of geulah. Biblical passages interweave national return, spiritual purification, and personal consolation, while Talmudic and medieval sources distinguish stages of redemption while affirming their interconnection.

What the sources say

The prophetic vision in Yechezkel 36:24-27 binds the ingathering to the land with inner transformation of heart and spirit, and Yirmiyahu 31:9-11 likewise describes the gathering of the scattered as an act of Hashem redeeming Yaakov himself — suggesting from the start that the return to the land and the inner renewal of the people are a single prophetic movement rather than separate events.

Yeshayahu 66:8-13 pictures the land and the nation being born together in a single travail, and Tehillim 126:5-6 frames this same process, sowing in tears and reaping in joy, as the personal experience running parallel to the national one.

The Gemara in Sanhedrin 97b records the machlokes between Rav and Shmuel, and the parallel dispute between Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua, over whether the redemption of the nation depends on teshuva or will come regardless, a tension echoed by Berakhot 34b's statement that all prophecy was aimed only at the days of Mashiach; the Rambam in Mishneh Torah, Repentance 7:5 resolves this by ruling that Israel's teshuva at the end of the exile brings the redemption immediately, tying the collective process to the return of each individual heart.

Midrashic and Rishonic sources sharpen this by locating the cause of exile in dispersal itself: Midrash Tanchuma, Nitzavim 1 states that Israel is redeemed only when they become one bound entity, and Chiddushei Aggadot, Eduyot 5 holds that Israel will not leave exile until they are completely united; the Maharal in Netzach Yisrael 1 explains that this unification is not incidental but a natural necessity, since a scattered nation with one essence must inherently return to be one.

Chassidic sources push this principle down to the level of the individual: Shem MiShmuel, Vaera 2:7 teaches that the root of exile is dispersal even within a single person's own faculties, so that the inner gathering of one's own parts is the precondition for the national ingathering, and Sefat Emet, Bereishit, Vayigash 27:5 similarly ties the possibility of national redemption to each individual's acceptance of ol malchut shamayim in the recitation of Shema, making personal and national geulah interdependent.

Rav Kook's writings draw the land itself into this same unity: Orot, Lights from Darkness, Land of Israel 1:1-2 describes Eretz Yisrael not as an external possession but as an entity bound in a living bond with the nation's inner sanctity, and Otzrot HaRaayah, Volume 6, Part ב 108:3 describes all of Israel across the generations as a single soul bound together from the root of the future good, joining land, people, and individual soul into one process.

Rav Dessler's Michtav MeEliyahu (Rav Dessler) states plainly that churban, galut, geulah, punishment, consolation, teshuva and joy are all one matter in their inner content, and the parallel passage in Michtav MeEliyahu (Rav Dessler) applies this directly to the individual, teaching that a person's private redemption of soul depends on siyata dishmaya earned through scrupulous honesty, and that through this one brings redemption to his own private world as well as to the world at large.

Rav Eliezer Melamed situates the national dimension as primary: Peninei Halakhah, The Nation and the Land 1:3 holds that the holiness of the collective, achieved only when the whole people stand together, can be revealed only in Eretz Yisrael, and Peninei Halakhah, Zemanim 4:2 connects the actual ingathering of the exiles in his generation to the Gemara's statement that this gathering is as great as the creation of heaven and earth, reading the return to the land as the concrete unfolding of the same redemptive process.

Ezekiel 36:24-28

Ezekiel 36:24-27

The ingathering to the land is followed by purification, a new heart, and a new spirit. This passage presents national return, restoration of Eretz Yisrael, and inner spiritual renewal as coordinated dimensions of one redemptive movement.

Jeremiah 31:9-16

Jeremiah 31:9-11

Jeremiah combines the return of Israel, the restoration of the land, and the consolation of individual mourners and families. The passage is especially useful for testing whether the redemption of the people and the healing of personal anguish form one process.

Isaiah 66:8-13

Isaiah describes Zion's sudden birth and the consoling, nurturing redemption of Jerusalem. The imagery links national restoration with the intimate experience of being comforted and sustained, providing a biblical basis for asking whether collective and personal redemption are interconnected.

Who ever heard the like? Who ever witnessed such events? Can a land pass through travail In a single day? Or is a nation born All at once? Yet Zion travailed And at once bore her children! That you may suck from her breast Consolation to the full, That you may draw from her bosom Glory to your delight. Like one whom a mother comforts. So I will comfort you: You shall find comfort in Jerusalem.

Psalms 126:1-6

Psalms 126:5-6

The psalm moves from the collective return of Zion to the personal experience of those who sow in tears and reap in joy. Its structure juxtaposes national geulah with individual transformation without simply collapsing them into one another.

Berakhot 34b

Berakhot 34b:19

The sugya discusses the distinction between the messianic era and the world to come, and frames redemption in terms of historical transformation rather than the abolition of all human limitation. It helps distinguish national-historical geulah from ultimate individual perfection.

Sanhedrin 97b

Sanhedrin 97b:14

The sugya presents traditions about the stages, signs, and conditions of the messianic process, including the relationship between repentance, historical redemption, and the end of exile. It is central for asking whether geulah unfolds through several intertwined tracks.

§ Rav says: All the ends of days that were calculated passed, and the matter depends only upon repentance and good deeds. When the Jewish people repent, they will be redeemed. And Shmuel says: It is sufficient for the mourner to endure in his mourning to bring about the coming of the Messiah. Even without repentance, they will be worthy of redemption due to the suffering they endured during the exile. The Gemara notes: This dispute is parallel to a dispute between tanna’im: Rabbi Eliezer says: If the Jewish people repent they are redeemed, and if not they are not redeemed. Rabbi Yehoshua said to him: If they do not repent, will they not be redeemed at all? Rather, the Holy One, Blessed be He, will establish a king for them whose decrees are as harsh as those issued by Haman, and the Jewish people will have no choice but to repent, and this will restore them to the right path. It is taught in another baraita that Rabbi Eliezer says: If the Jewish people repent they are redeemed, as it is stated: “Return, wayward children, I will heal your iniquities” (Jeremiah 3:22). Rabbi Yehoshua said to him: But isn’t it already stated: “So says the Lord: You were sold for naught, and without money you shall be redeemed” (Isaiah 52:3)? Rabbi Yehoshua explains: “You were sold for naught” means you were sold for idol worship, which is a sin with no basis. “And without money you shall be redeemed” means you will be redeemed not through repentance and good deeds, but through the will of God. Rabbi Eliezer said to Rabbi Yehoshua: But isn’t it already stated: “Return to me and I will return to you” (Malachi 3:7)? Rabbi Yehoshua said to him: But isn’t it already stated: “For I have taken you to Myself; and I will take you one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion” (Jeremiah 3:14), unconditionally?

Megillah 17b

Megillah 17b:13

The Talmud explains the order of the Amidah blessings, placing the ingathering of exiles, restoration of justice, and rebuilding of Jerusalem within a sequence of redemption-related blessings. This is a key source for distinguishing stages while preserving their unity.

The Gemara continues: And why did they see fit to institute to say the blessing of redemption as the seventh blessing? Rava said: Since there is a tradition that the Jewish people are destined to be redeemed in the seventh year of the Sabbatical cycle, consequently, they fixed redemption as the seventh blessing. But didn’t the Master say in a baraita: In the sixth year of the Sabbatical cycle in the days of the arrival of the Messiah, heavenly sounds will be heard; in the seventh year there will be wars; and upon the conclusion of the seventh year, in the eighth year, the son of David, the Messiah, will come? The redemption will take place not during the seventh year but after it. The Gemara answers: Nevertheless, the war that takes place during the seventh year is also the beginning of the redemption process, and it is therefore correct to say that Israel will be redeemed in the seventh year. The Gemara asks: And why did they see fit to institute that one says the blessing of the ingathering of the exiles after the blessing of the years? As it is written: “And you, O mountains of Israel, you shall shoot forth your branches, and yield your fruit to My people Israel; for they will soon be coming” (Ezekiel 36:8), which indicates that the ingathering of the exiles will follow after Eretz Yisrael is blessed with bountiful produce. And once the exiles have been gathered, judgment will be meted out to the wicked, as it is stated: “And I will turn my hand against you and purge away your dross as with lye” (Isaiah 1:25), and immediately after it is written: “And I will restore your judges as at first” (Isaiah 1:26). For this reason the blessing of the restoration of judges comes after the blessing of the ingathering of the exiles. And once Jerusalem is rebuilt, the Messiah, scion of the house of David, will come, as it is stated:

Pesachim 88a

Pesachim 88a:3

The prophetic vision of Jerusalem and the nations gathered around it is interpreted in relation to the future redemption. The passage supports analysis of geulah as both the restoration of a place and the transformation of a people and its religious mission.

The Gemara returns to its discussion of prophecies of consolation that are related to those in the book of Hosea. And Rabbi Elazar said: What is the meaning of that which is written: “And many peoples shall go and say: Go and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths” (Isaiah 2:3)? The Gemara notes that Jacob is the only Patriarch mentioned and asks: Is He the God of Jacob and not the God of Abraham and Isaac? Rather, the verse specifically mentions Jacob to allude to the fact that the Temple will ultimately be described in the same way that Jacob referred to it. It will not be referred to as it was referred to by Abraham. It is written of him that when he prayed at the location of the Temple mountain, he called it mount, as it is stated: “As it is said on this day: On the mount where the Lord is seen” (Genesis 22:14). And it will not be referred to as it was referred to by Isaac. It is written of him that he called the location of the Temple field when he prayed there, as it is stated: “And Isaac went out to meditate in the field” (Genesis 24:63). Rather, it will be described as it was referred to by Jacob, who called it house, as it is stated: “And he called the name of that place Beth-El” (Genesis 28:19), which means house of God. Rabbi Yoḥanan said: The day of the ingathering of exiles is as great as the day on which heaven and earth were created. This is derived by means of a verbal analogy between the word day in these two contexts, as it is stated concerning the ingathering of exiles: “And the children of Judea and the children of Israel shall be gathered together, and they shall appoint themselves one head, and shall go up out of the land; for great shall be the day of Jezreel” (Hosea 2:2), and it is written in the narrative of Creation: “And there was evening and there was morning, one day” (Genesis 1:5).

Ketubot 111a

Ketubot 111a:1

Chachmei Bavel record a dispute between Rav Yehuda and Rabbi Zeira over the oaths against prematurely pursuing redemption: Rav Yehuda understands them to prohibit leaving Babylonia until God initiates redemption, while Rabbi Zeira limits them to mass immigration, permitting individuals to ascend to Eretz Yisrael.

“They shall be taken to Babylonia and there they shall remain until the day that I recall them, said the Lord” (Jeremiah 27:22). Based on that verse, Rav Yehuda held that since the Babylonian exile was imposed by divine decree, permission to leave Babylonia for Eretz Yisrael could be granted only by God. The Gemara asks: And how does Rabbi Zeira interpret that verse? The Gemara answers that Rabbi Zeira maintains that that verse is written about the Temple service vessels, and it does not refer to the Jewish people, as the previous verse states: “Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, concerning the vessels that remain in the house of the Lord” (Jeremiah 27:21). Consequently, Rabbi Zeira sought to ascend to Eretz Yisrael. The Gemara asks: And how does Rav Yehuda respond to this argument? The verse is clearly referring to the Temple vessels, not to the people. The Gemara answers that another verse is written: “I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles and by the hinds of the field, that you not awaken or stir up love, until it please” (Song of Songs 2:7). Rabbi Yehuda derived from here that no act of redemption should be performed until a time arrives when it pleases God to bring about the redemption. And Rabbi Zeira maintains that the oath mentioned in that verse means that the Jews should not ascend to Eretz Yisrael as a wall, i.e., en masse, whereas individuals may immigrate as they wish. The Gemara asks: And what does Rav Yehuda reply to this? The Gemara answers that this command is derived from another verse in which “I adjure you” (Song of Songs 3:5) is written.

Gittin 8b

Gittin 8b:1

The passage explains that Syria acquired by King David receives the sanctity of Eretz Yisrael because an individual’s conquest is considered conquest, and that purchasing land there is treated like purchasing land near Jerusalem, permitting a gentile to write the bill of sale on Shabbat for the sake of settling Eretz Yisrael.

is like one who purchases a field in the outskirts [parvarei] of Jerusalem. The Gemara clarifies: The tanna who says Syria is obligated in tithe and the mitzvot of the Sabbatical Year like Eretz Yisrael holds that the conquest of an individual is called a conquest. Once Syria was conquered by King David, who is considered an individual in this regard, the sanctity of Eretz Yisrael applied to it and its residents became obligated in the mitzvot of Eretz Yisrael. The baraita further teaches: And one who purchases a field in Syria is like one who purchases a field in the outskirts of Jerusalem. The Gemara asks: With regard to which halakha was this stated? What practical ruling is taught by this statement? Rav Sheshet says: This serves to say that one writes a bill of sale [ono] for this purchase, and one may write a bill of sale even on Shabbat. The Gemara asks: Can it enter your mind that one may write this bill of sale on Shabbat? Writing on Shabbat is a prohibited labor for which one is liable to receive court-imposed capital punishment. The Gemara explains: This is as Rava says with regard to a similar issue, that one tells a gentile that he should do it, and he does so. Here too, it is referring to a situation where one tells a gentile that he should write a bill of sale, and he does so. And even though the halakha generally is that telling a gentile to perform an action that is prohibited for a Jew on Shabbat violates a rabbinic decree, since the Sages prohibited instructing a gentile to perform prohibited labor on behalf of a Jew on Shabbat, here the Sages did not impose this decree, due to the mitzva of settling Eretz Yisrael.

Mishneh Torah, Repentance 7:5

Rambam describes the messianic redemption as bound up with Israel's repentance and the restoration of prophecy and Torah-directed life. The chapter is useful for connecting an individual's teshuvah with the collective condition of Israel, while retaining a distinct legal-spiritual emphasis.

Kuzari 2:24

Rabbi Yehudah Halevi argues that the divine presence and Israel's distinctive spiritual life are realized especially in the Land of Israel. The passage supplies a strong model in which the redemption of the land and the spiritual fulfillment of the Jewish people are inseparable.

Netzach Yisrael 28

Netzach Yisrael 28:1

The Maharal develops the relationship between Israel, exile, redemption, and the restoration of proper order. The chapter is useful for examining whether the redemption of Am Yisrael is the macrocosm within which the redemption of individuals and the land takes place.

Netzach Yisrael 1

Netzach Yisrael 1:4

The Maharal presents the exile and redemption of Israel as expressions of a metaphysical structure in which Israel's national identity and historical destiny are distinct from ordinary political history. This opening chapter is a starting point for the claim that national geulah has its own ontological process.

Similarly, dispersal is not a natural state of affairs. Just as each thing returns to its place, so dispersed and separated parts have to return to [become] one entity. This is clear to anyone of intelligence, that all parts have one essence to them. If so, why would there be a division between them, and not unity, since they are one thing? Therefore all dispersal stands only to be coalesced together. Therefore the dispersal of the People of Israel among the nations is a thing which exists outside of nature, since (the People of Israel) is one nation, suitable to be standing together as one, as is found in the case of all natural things which are not divided into two. Rather that they should be joined together. Similarly "All the rivers flow into the sea" (Kohelet 1:7) to be gathered together. One thing is not divided. So since the Jewish nation is a nation united more than any other nation, not divided or separated , it is appropriate that they should be gathered together. From this we can see that dispersal is particularly unnatural for them. It is impossible to say that this state of affairs is only because of sin and iniquity, after all the dispersal of the People of Israel is so unnatural, because if this were to become permanent, then the unnatural would have to become natural. The Sages hinted towards this idea, in their wisdom, in Midrash Bereishit Rabbah (44:18) [on the double language in the verse] "G-d said to Avram you shall surely know [lit: it is known, you will know]" (Gen 15:13)" [The Midrash says:] "(1) It is known that I will disperse them, you will know that I will gather them in. (2) It is known that I will pawn them, you will know that I will reclaim them. (3) It is known that I will subjugate them, you will know that I will redeem them." This Midrash did not need to express all three of these ideas, because they are all one concept. It would have been enough for them to express [only the third one] "It is known that I will subjugate them, you will know that I will redeem them" Because this is the essence which records that, in any case, that He will redeem Am Yisrael. So why did they need to mention also the idea of (1) gathering in and (2) reclaiming? The [Sages] wanted to express that by this double expression the exile and redemption are hinted at. The exile is referred to by the expression "it is known" and the redemption by the expression "you will know" in the future tense. They explain [that G-d is saying] "it is known that I disperse them, you will know that I will gather them in". Because dispersal is not according to the order of existence - that a single entity, like the People of Israel which is one people, should be dispersed, as has been explained already, that things which are one are together also. And [the Sages say] "it is known that I will pawn them" meaning that I will put them under the authority of others, and it is not appropriate according to the order of existence that the People of Israel should stand under any other sovereignty. Because when the People of Israel are in another land, they leave behind their own sovereignty and stand under the authority of another. Like a pawned object which is situated in the domain of someone other than its owner. So with the People of Israel, who should not, according to the order of existence, be under the government of others, and that others should be subjugating them, because it was not for this that they were created. Therefore, "by it being known that I will subjugate them, you will know that I will redeem them" - take them out of the subjugation. Because He is the One who ordered existence, it is impossible that something which comes from Him should depart from that order. Rather something temporary arising out of the happening of a sin, because something which is a temporary punishment because of sin is not called a departure from the order of existence. But for such a state of affairs to continue forever cannot be, because you will not find anything which departs from the natural order which sustains. Similarly when [the Sages] said "it is known that I will subjugate them, you will know that I will redeem them", it is because the subjugation of one nation by another is not in accordance with the order of existence as it should be, because it should be that every nation is free. This we have discussed at length in my book "Gevurot Hashem" (Chap 35) on the verse "This month shall be for you the first of months" (Ex 12:2) q.v. Thus has been explained by these three ideas [being out of place, dispersal, and subjugation] that one can come to an understanding of redemption from [understanding] exile. And you will understand all this, since the letters of the expressions, exiled [galah] and redeemed [gaal], are the same [even though only the first has a hey and only the second has an alef]. It is just that the expression, redeemed, hints within it that He, may He be blessed, redeemed them from all four directions of the world and united their dispersion. For all unity in the world is in the center, since the edges are divided but the center is one. And that is why the alef, which is unity and the unification of the dispersion, is in the middle [of the word]. However, exiled is with a hey, which is dispersion. And dispersion is in the four directions, in all of the edges, and also in the center. For something that is dispersed is dispersed in all of the space, which includes the four directions and also the center. And even though the middle is not dispersion — this thing that they have a middle comes to teach that a power of unity and assembly remains among the Jewish people, as will be explained. It also tells you that the exile itself is a cause for the redemption, to assemble the dispersion, and for the Jewish people to be one. Hence the letters of exiled are the letters of redeemed, except that the dispersion becomes a unification, which is hinted to in the alef of gaal; and with that which there is a hey in the word, galah, since the hey teaches that the Jewish people is dispersed in all of the corners and in the center. And because of this, unity remains among them, even in their exile. As, behold, the one that is in the center, in the middle of the four [directions], unites and binds the dispersion of the four to itself. For the middle always unites and binds everything. And this thing indicates that the Jewish people still have the power of unity in their exile, and that they have not been completely separated. And because of this power of unity that remains in them, they will again unite. For if, God forbid, there were no power of unity remaining in them, they would have already separated and they would not have the power to become reunited. However now they will unite from the power of unity that remains among the Jewish people.

Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 4 4:4

Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 4 4:4

Ramhal describes the redemption as a time when spiritual תיקונים and unions intensify continually, with the Shechinah rejoicing, the king remaining among the righteous, and all Israel rejoicing as the lights increase without end.

Maamar HaGeulah, Peticha 1:2

Maamar HaGeulah, Peticha 1:2

Ramhal presents the verse as revealing Israel’s certainty and hope for a complete redemption, explaining that during the apparent concealment of the exile, vast treasures of blessing were prepared for Israel and will be opened in the future era of great rest as a reward for their arduous service in exile.

Kli Yakar on Genesis 35:10

Kli Yakar on Genesis 35:10

Kli Yakar explains that Jacob’s two names allude to two stages of redemption: the Exodus and earlier redemptions remain part of the story but become secondary to the final redemption, in which crookedness is transformed into straightness and redemption is complete rather than hurried, deceptive, or temporary.

And by way of allusion, I have a way to explain Jacob’s two names in reference to the two redemptions, since we find in our Rabbis’ teachings that the Exodus from Egypt will not be completely uprooted, but rather the remembrance of the miracles of the Exodus will become secondary, while the remembrance of future miracles will become primary. Similarly here, they said that the name Jacob will not be completely uprooted, but will become secondary while the name Israel will be primary. Therefore, both are one matter. And so it says regarding the final redemption, And the crooked shall become straight (Isaiah 40:4). The word akov [crooked] is derived from the name Yaakov [Jacob], and mishor [straight] is derived from the name Yisrael [Israel], meaning “straight to God.” And since it is said As in the days when you left Egypt, I will show you wonders (Micah 7:15), this teaches that the future miracles will not be greater than the miracles of Egypt. So why will the miracles of Egypt become secondary? Because during the redemption from Egypt, their merit was not sufficient to bring them out with an upraised hand, and they needed to proceed with cunning and deception, saying “Let us go sacrifice to the Lord our God.” And every fugitive goes in haste, as it is written you shall eat it in haste (Exodus 12:11). And regarding the Babylonian redemption, it is obvious that it was not a complete redemption but merely a temporary visitation, and there too it is said Flee from Babylon, flee from the Chaldeans (Isaiah 48:20). However, in the final redemption, after the sin has been completely purged through the length of this current exile, their merit will be sufficient for them to depart with an upraised hand, on a straight path rather than with cunning/deception [reference to Jacob’s name’s meaning] and not in haste, as it is written For you shall not go out in haste, nor shall you depart in flight (Isaiah 52:14). This is what is meant by “the crooked shall become straight.” Nevertheless, the name Jacob will not be completely uprooted, and similarly, the memory of the Exodus from Egypt will not be completely uprooted, so that both redemptions will be remembered together, and they will know and recognize the difference between them which was caused by sin. For without doubt, they were evil and sinful in Egypt, as explained in Ezekiel’s prophecy (Ezekiel 20:8), which is why it is fitting that it [the first redemption] should be secondary. Similarly, the name Jacob is not completely uprooted for this reason, and additionally because the redemption serves two purposes: the redemption of bodies from subjugation and troubles, and the redemption of the soul in terms of spiritual matters that were given to Israel, as indicated by the names Jacob and Israel — one physical and one spiritual, as explained by Rabbeinu Bachya. And even though the spiritual is primary, nevertheless the name Jacob will not be completely uprooted, because a person needs to give a portion to both this and that. However, the name Abram was completely uprooted, because for all generations he remains the father of many nations, as both the tents of Edom and Ishmael are among his descendants.

Gevurot Hashem 9

Gevurot Hashem 9:43

Maharal explains that the three elements of the foretold exile—גירות, עבודה, and עינוי—correspond to three ancestral sins: harming Torah scholars, overstepping the Divine attribute of judgment, and failing to bring converts under the wings of the Shechinah.

Shem MiShmuel, Passover:10

The Shem MiShmuel's Passover teachings repeatedly connect the Exodus of the nation with the liberation and transformation of the individual soul. This source supports a layered model: one root of redemption manifested through personal, national, and land-centered realities.

Shem MiShmuel, Beshalach 10:28

Shem Mishmuel explains that the Exodus invoked the merits of Jacob and Joseph: Jacob’s merit brought redemption through divine grace and mercy, enabling Israel to leave while still considered righteous despite their immersion in impurity, whereas a later redemption would have been compelled even for the entirely wicked.

Shem MiShmuel, Vaera 2:7

Shem MiShmuel, Vaera 2:7

Shem Mishmuel explains that exile is dispersion, while redemption is gathering and unity: each Jew must first gather his own faculties, enabling Israel’s collective unification through the דעת imparted by Moshe Rabbeinu, whose role was indispensable for their redemption.

Sfas Emes teaches that exile is fundamentally characterized by dispersion, while the Jews remain united as one soul through a shared desire; accepting the yoke of Heaven properly in the daily Shema further unites them and prepares them for redemption.

Shem MiShmuel, Vayechi 4:18

Shem MiShmuel, Vayechi 4:18

Shem Mishmuel explains that Israel’s redemption differs from that of other nations: it requires both liberation from Egyptian oppression and the creation of Israel’s enduring existence through attachment to God, achieved through the Torah, as reflected in the doubled redemption and the four expressions of redemption.

Orot, Lights from Darkness, Israel and its Rebirth 1:1-4

Rav Kook describes the revival of Israel as a historical-spiritual process involving national life, holiness, and the emergence of a renewed Jewish collective. The passage is especially relevant to the question of one geulah with multiple dimensions.

Rav Kook presents the return to the Land as a redemptive awakening with spiritual significance beyond ordinary national restoration. These sections are central to the model in which geulat Eretz Yisrael generates or expresses the redemption of the nation and the individual soul.

recovered from “Orot HaTeshuvah 17:1-3”

Orot HaTeshuvah, Chapter

Orot HaTeshuvah, Chapter 17:2

Kook describes Supernal Teshuvah as arising from recognition of the divine goodness pervading all worlds and humanity’s connection to the Whole, thereby bringing Teshuvah in individual and collective life; he then describes specific Teshuvah as regret for sin, liberation from its enslavement, healing, spiritual joy, brokenheartedness, and renewed closeness to the Living G-d.

(5) The Supernal Teshuvah comes from a flash of the General Good, the Goodness of G-d which abounds in all the worlds, the Light of the Life of the Worlds. The Soul of All appears intimately before us in Her Splendor and Holiness, as much as the heart can absorb. Isn't the Whole really very good and honest, and the honesty and goodness within us comes from our faithfulness to the Whole? How could one be torn from the Whole, like a strange crumb or a single imperceptible grain of dust? From this realization, which is true G-dly realization, comes Teshuvah in the life of the individual and the collective. (1) Specific Specified Teshuvah and General Encompassing Teshuvah (2) There is Teshuvah which is directed to counteract a particular sin or many sins. A person puts their sin before their face, regrets it and suffers over having been ensnared in the trap of sin. One's soul climbs and ascends until one becomes free from the enslavement to sin and feels within oneself the holy freedom which is so pleasant to the soul and aura that one becomes increasingly healed. The rays of the light of the sun of Hesed, Supernal Compassion, send out their beams, and a person becomes increasingly happy, and increasingly filled with internal pleasure and delight. This is along with heartbrokenness and a soul swimming in sadness, since even this feeling is beneficial for the person in accord with their situation and can add more internal spiritual pleasure and true wholeness. A person feels themself drawing closer to the Source of Life, to the Living G-d in a way that has not been the case before when they were so far away from G-d. The person's longing soul remembers with heartfelt joy the internal suffering of before and is filled with feelings of gratitude, with thanksgiving and song the soul raises her voice saying " Bless GOD, O my soul, all my being, that holy name. Bless the ETERNAL One, O my soul, and do not forget all God’s bounties. All your sins are forgiven, all your diseases healed. Your life is redeemed from the Pit." You are surrounded with steadfast love and mercy. You are satisfied with good things in the prime of life, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. GOD executes righteous acts and judgments for all who are wronged" (Psalm 103:1-6).

Michtav MeEliyahu (Rav Dessler)

The passage states that destruction, exile, redemption, calamity, consolation, repentance, forgiveness, and joy are all essentially one process, with the seed of repentance and redemption embedded even in destruction and capable of being cultivated by each individual and by the community.

Kook presents a second interpretation concerning the delay of the exile: although God can restore and gather Israel and dwell among them, three deficiencies delay His indwelling until they are remedied, since Israel’s service builds the heavenly palace and the heavenly Jerusalem cannot be entered before the earthly Jerusalem.

Ein Aya, Berakhot 1:112

Kook states that redemption from slavery to freedom has two dimensions for an entire people: an inner sense of rising above servitude and becoming free and self-governing, and the outward reality of living and acting as a free nation; for Israel, the inner freedom also begins their perfection through holy character, Torah and mitzvot, and wisdom.

Peninei Halakhah, The Nation and the Land 1:3

The passage states that only Am Yisrael can reveal the holiness of a unified national service of God, and that this distinctive national holiness is revealed specifically in Eretz Yisrael, where Israel is called “one nation.

Rav Eliezer Melamed (Peninei Halakhah, The Nation and the Land 1:4)

Peninei Halakhah, The Nation and the Land 1:4

The passage states that Israel’s existence depends on faith and its connection to God, which can be fully realized only in Eretz Yisrael, while life in the Diaspora is an unnatural temporary state whose Jewish continuity depends on longing and hope for return to the land.
