Biblical prophecies and rabbinic interpretations describing Israel's gathering from exile, return to and cultivation of the land, and the spiritual and physical renewal that accompanies restoration to the ancestral soil.

What the sources say
The prophetic vision of geulas ha'aretz begins with the ingathering of exiles and the physical renewal of the land itself, as Yechezkel 36:24-27 describes God bringing the people back to their land and giving them a new heart, while Yechezkel 36:33-36 describes the ruined cities rebuilt and the desolate land becoming like the garden of Eden, a theme echoed in Yeshayahu 11:11-12 and Amos 9:14-15.
The Torah itself grounds this return in Devarim 30:1-2, and Mishneh Torah, Melachim and Wars 11:1 cites this very passage as the Torah's own testimony that the Messianic king will gather the dispersed of Israel and restore them to their land.
Chazal treat the physical flourishing of Eretz Yisrael as the clearest sign of the coming redemption, as Sanhedrin 98a records Rabbi Abba's teaching that the mountains of Israel yielding their fruit is the most explicit manifestation of the end of days, a reading later applied by Rav Eliezer Melamed (Peninei Halakhah, Zemanim 4:2) to the ingathering of exiles and flourishing of the land in his own time.
Yet Ketubot 111a records a countervailing tradition of oaths restraining Israel from ascending to the land as a mass movement before the appointed time, showing that the classical sources themselves contain tension between active return and awaiting divine initiative.
Rishonim develop the deeper meaning of this return: Rashi (Devarim 30:3) explains that the Divine Presence itself is, as it were, exiled with Israel and returns together with them, while the Ramban (Devarim 30:6) links the return to an inner transformation in which the choice for good becomes natural in the Messianic era, and the Ramban (Vayikra 26:16) ties the shemitah-years of desolation directly to the exile that precedes this restoration.
Later thinkers frame exile and return as a metaphysical necessity, as Netzach Yisrael 1:2 argues that exile is itself proof of the coming redemption since Israel's displacement from its natural place in Eretz Yisrael cannot be permanent, and Orot, Lights from Darkness, Land of Israel 1:1-2 describes the land as intrinsically bound to the nation's inner sanctity rather than a mere external possession.
Teshuvos V'hanhagos 3:140 holds that redemption itself carries an obligation to sing a new song, reflecting the incomplete joy of the present exile that will be perfected in the future geulah through God's wonders.
Mishpat Kohen 21 addresses the sacred value of expanding settlement in the Land of Israel, describing its fruit-bearing hills as a revealed sign of approaching salvation.
Tzitz Eliezer 10:10 expresses the hope for the imminent and complete fulfillment of the redemption promise, bringing joy and a new song.
Responsa on this question
Mishpat Kohen (Mishpat Kohen 19) — Mishpat Kohen permits grafting an apricot shoot onto an almond rootstock below the ground surface when the rootstock exhibits branching characteristics similar to roots, provided the tree is cut slightly below the point where the roots diverge and the orlah years are counted from the time of grafting rather than from the original planting, based on the reasoning that such a graft may not constitute a biblical prohibition of diverse kinds and that settling the Land of Israel justifies seeking leniencies in this matter.

Ezekiel 36:24-28
Ezekiel 36:24-27
God promises to gather Israel from the nations, bring them onto their soil, purify them, and establish them in the land under a renewed covenantal relationship.
Thus said the Sovereign GOD: When I have purified you of all your iniquities, I will people your settlements, and the ruined places shall be rebuilt; and the desolate land, after lying waste in the sight of every passerby, shall again be tilled. And it shall be said, “That land, once desolate, has become like the garden of Eden; and the cities, once ruined, desolate, and ravaged, are now populated and fortified.”
§ And Rabbi Abba says: You have no more explicit manifestation of the end of days than this following phenomenon, as it is stated: “But you, mountains of Israel, you shall give your branches, and yield your fruit to My people of Israel, for they will soon be coming” (Ezekiel 36:8). When produce will grow in abundance in Eretz Yisrael, it is an indication that the Messiah will be coming soon. Rabbi Eliezer says: You have no greater manifestation of the end of days than this following phenomenon as well, as it is stated: “For before these days there was no hire for man, nor any hire for beast; nor was there peace from the oppressor to him who exits and to him who enters” (Zechariah 8:10). When there are no wages for work and no rent paid for use of one’s animal, that is an indication that the coming of the Messiah is at hand.
The sugya develops the idea of the oath-bound relationship between Israel and the land and discusses the eschatological return and settlement of the land.
The Gemara asks: And how does Rav Yehuda respond to this argument? The verse is clearly referring to the Temple vessels, not to the people. The Gemara answers that another verse is written: “I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles and by the hinds of the field, that you not awaken or stir up love, until it please” (Song of Songs 2:7). Rabbi Yehuda derived from here that no act of redemption should be performed until a time arrives when it pleases God to bring about the redemption. And Rabbi Zeira maintains that the oath mentioned in that verse means that the Jews should not ascend to Eretz Yisrael as a wall, i.e., en masse, whereas individuals may immigrate as they wish. The Gemara asks: And what does Rav Yehuda reply to this? The Gemara answers that this command is derived from another verse in which “I adjure you” (Song of Songs 3:5) is written. The Gemara asks: And how does Rabbi Zeira explain the repetition of this oath in these verses? The Gemara explains: That verse is necessary for that which was taught by Rabbi Yosei, son of Rabbi Ḥanina, who said: Why are these three oaths (Song of Songs 2:7, 3:5, 8:4) needed? One, so that the Jews should not ascend to Eretz Yisrael as a wall, but little by little. And another one, that the Holy One, Blessed be He, adjured the Jews that they should not rebel against the rule of the nations of the world. And the last one is that the Holy One, Blessed be He, adjured the nations of the world that they should not subjugate the Jews excessively.
2. “And you shall disinherit them and settle in their land” (Dt. 12:29). The story is told: R. Judah b. Betyra and R. Matya b. Heresh, R. Hananiah b. Ahi, R. Joshua, and R. Jonathan, were leaving [to journey beyond] the Land. When they reached Poltos, they recalled the Land of Israel. They lifted up their eyes and their tears flowed. They tore their garments, and recited this verse: “And you shall dispossess them and settle there, and take care to preserve all these laws” (Dt. 11:31-32). They said: settling the Land of Israel outweighs all the commandments of the Torah! The story is told: R. Elazar b. Shammua and R. Yohanan the Sandler, were going to Nisibis, to the home of R. Judah b. Betyra, to learn Torah from him. When they reached Sidon, they recalled the Land of Israel. They lifted up their eyes and their tears flowed. They tore their garments, and recited this verse: “And you shall dispossess them and settle there and take care to preserve all these laws” (Dt. 11:31-32). They said: settling the Land of Israel outweighs all the commandments of the Torah! So they turned around and returned to the Land of Israel.
The passage states that purchasing a field in Syria is treated like purchasing land near Jerusalem, permitting a bill of sale to be written through a gentile even on Shabbat because the Sages suspended the usual decree against such instruction for the mitzvah of settling Eretz Yisrael.
The baraita further teaches: And one who purchases a field in Syria is like one who purchases a field in the outskirts of Jerusalem. The Gemara asks: With regard to which halakha was this stated? What practical ruling is taught by this statement? Rav Sheshet says: This serves to say that one writes a bill of sale [ono] for this purchase, and one may write a bill of sale even on Shabbat. The Gemara asks: Can it enter your mind that one may write this bill of sale on Shabbat? Writing on Shabbat is a prohibited labor for which one is liable to receive court-imposed capital punishment. The Gemara explains: This is as Rava says with regard to a similar issue, that one tells a gentile that he should do it, and he does so. Here too, it is referring to a situation where one tells a gentile that he should write a bill of sale, and he does so. And even though the halakha generally is that telling a gentile to perform an action that is prohibited for a Jew on Shabbat violates a rabbinic decree, since the Sages prohibited instructing a gentile to perform prohibited labor on behalf of a Jew on Shabbat, here the Sages did not impose this decree, due to the mitzva of settling Eretz Yisrael.
Ramban reads the future return and repentance as a redemptive process culminating in the restoration of Israel to its land and complete covenantal renewal.
Ramban explains the covenantal curses and the land’s desolation in exile, emphasizing the land’s refusal to accept Israel’s enemies as a sign of its special bond with Israel.
The Maharal frames exile and redemption as movements governed by Israel’s essential national and metaphysical relationship to its proper land and sovereignty.
There is another reason to explain the concept of exile first. The exile itself is proof and clear imperative for redemption. This is because there is no doubt that exile is an alteration and departure from the normal order. The Blessed Holy One arranged each nation in the place which is appropriate for it, so he arranged the People of Israel into the place which is appropriate for it, namely the Land of Israel. Exile from their place is a complete alteration and departure [from that order]. Anything which departs from its natural place, which is outside its place, is unable to stay in the place which is not natural for it. Rather they need to return to their natural place. Because if they remain in a place which is unnatural for them, then the unnatural would become natural. And it is impossible for the unnatural to become natural. A metaphor: it is like trying to force fire to stay down, when it's natural state is to rise - or like trying to hold up solid matter, when its natural state is to fall to the earth. If you could achieve that, then you would be making the unnatural natural. Similarly with the People of Israel themselves. If they were to stay in exile for ever, which is not the right place for them to be (since the right place for them, according to the order of existence, is the Land of Israel under their own sovereignty and not under the sovereignty of any other). Just like everything in natural existence, each one has its own place as our sages decreed (Pirkei Avot 4:3) "There is nothing which does not have its place". Each thing under its own sovereignty. If they would remain in exile forever, then this thing (unnaturally standing outside their place) would become natural. Only natural things can stand permanently, because the nature which the Blessed Holy One gave to each thing is what sustains it such that it is established to stand forever. If an unnatural state of affairs were to exist forever, even though it was not according to the order and nature of existence, then the nature of that thing would be loosened and nullified completely for no purpose, and such a thing could not happen.
Or HaChaim presents redemption as a process of restoring Israel’s inheritance, with the land and its redemption expressing the recovery of Israel’s spiritual identity.
The Maharal analyzes the redemptive restoration of Israel as a return to its natural national order, including the land that constitutes Israel’s proper place.
Reb Tzadok explains that the primary sanctity of Eretz Yisrael lies in the “nine measures of wisdom” it possesses; while the nations held the land, they drew opposing vitality from this wisdom, but after Israel conquered it, the nine measures remained with Israel.
Maamar HaGeulah, Peticha 1:2
Ramhal’s passage describes preparations made during the exile for a complete and speedy redemption, including hidden stores of immense goodness, blessing, wealth, and royal treasures that will be revealed as wisdom spreads throughout the world.
Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 8 13:6
Ramhal states that he has explained the matters of redemption in detail, according to the rectifications needed for Israel’s success and the repair of the entire world through the rectification of the higher luminaries, and expresses the hope that this will occur soon.
Netziv explains that land in the ancestral portion must be redeemed even after being sold to a non-Jew, especially to prevent its being worked during Shemitah, and that redeeming such land serves the settlement of Eretz Yisrael even in the present era.
The passage states that redemption must be provided for land sold to a non-Jew, even during the Sabbatical year, but only when the land is in the possession of its Israelite owners and not when the entire land is held by non-Jews.
Gra states that in the future Gehinom will be purified of its impurity and incorporated into Gan Eden, and both will be established in the Land of Israel.

Sefat Emet, Leviticus, Passover 7:12
Sfas Emes explains that Eretz Yisrael is the chosen place, the festivals the chosen times, and Israel the chosen souls, whose longing binds them to the festivals and the land; even in exile, this inner connection endures through Torah, prayer, mitzvos, and sincere desire, which God joins to the deeds of the ancestors until the Temple is rebuilt.
Sfas Emes states that just as Israel’s redemption involved both physical and spiritual deliverance from among the nations, the Land of Israel was redeemed from the seven nations in both physical and spiritual terms.
Sfas Emes connects the Exodus from Egypt and the redemption of Eretz Yisrael, explaining that just as the souls of Bnei Yisrael were redeemed from Egypt, Eretz Yisrael was freed from the Canaanites and became Hashem’s inheritance, an expansive inheritance without boundaries.
Shem Mishmuel explains that Israel’s redemption differs from that of other nations: it requires both liberation from Egyptian oppression and the creation of Israel’s enduring existence through attachment to God, achieved through the Torah, as reflected in the doubled redemption and the four expressions of redemption.
The passage derives from “ושב ה' אלקיך” that the Shechinah is present with Israel in the distress of their exile.
In this sichaThe sicha analyzes Rashi's commentary on the verse 'ושב ה' אלקיך את שבותך', explaining that the term 'ושב' (and He will return) rather than 'והשיב' (and He will bring back) teaches that God dwells with Israel in exile and is, so to speak, redeemed along with them. The discourse resolves several textual difficulties in Rashi, distinguishing between God's general empathy with Israel's suffering and this unique dimension of shared exile and redemption. Ultimately, this reveals the deep, intrinsic bond between God and the Jewish people, which guarantees the ultimate personal and collective redemption of every Jew.
The passage explains that Jacob sought to reveal the Keitz to bring an immediate and permanent redemption, but this was withheld because enduring redemption requires the Jewish people’s spiritual refinement through exile; his effort nevertheless empowered every generation to seek and prepare for the Messiah’s immediate arrival.
In this sichaThe sicha explains that Jacob's desire to reveal the "End of Days" (Keitz) was an attempt to facilitate an immediate and eternal redemption. G-d prevented this because a truly permanent redemption requires the Jewish people's independent spiritual refinement and labor throughout the challenges of exile. Nonetheless, Jacob's effort successfully empowered all future generations with the ability and responsibility to demand and prepare for the immediate arrival of the Messiah.
The passage describes the establishment of the State of Israel, the Six-Day War’s liberation of Jerusalem and the holy cities of Judea and Samaria, the ingathering of exiles, and the flowering of the land as the beginning of redemption and a clear sign that its end is near.
Rav Kook presents the Land of Israel as the organic setting of Israel’s national and spiritual life, not merely a geographical possession, and describes its redemptive significance.

Orot, Lights from Darkness, Land of Israel 6:2
Rav Kook explains that the land’s holiness is bound to the distinctive collective life of Israel and that the return to the land enables the nation’s spiritual mission.

Otzrot HaRaayah, Volume 6, Part ב 108:13
Kook states that nearly every kabbalistic work discusses the Land of Israel and redemption, since Kabbalah looks beyond the flawed present toward a perfected, holy future; he especially notes that the Zohar contains scarcely a section without discussion of redemption and the Land of Israel.
The passage explains that redemption carries an obligation to sing, interpreting “a new song” in light of the incomplete joy and enthusiasm of the present exile, which will be perfected in the future redemption through the wonders of God.

Otzrot HaRaayah, Volume 6, Part ב 71:25
Kook describes a new spirit of grace and supplication that awakens a natural love for the Jewish people and their land, raising Israel’s banner through the holiness of the eternal God even amid bitter decline and darkness in the land of the living, Jacob’s everlasting inheritance.
The passage says that the light of repentance, which contains the key to redemption, will soon appear, causing the nations and the people of Israel to recognize God’s name upon them with awe, and calls for consultation about what should be done for the benefit of the people of God and the Holy Land in the coming period.

The passage presents the return of liberated territories as a debated issue involving strategic, political, historical, and emotional considerations, as well as a fundamental question of Jewish law concerning settlement in the Land of Israel and obligations arising from it.
Over the past number of years one of the most heatedly debated issues in Israel and in centers of Jewish population throughout the world has been the question of return of the liberated territories. Quite apart from strategic and political considerations as well as historical and emotional attachments, this issue involves a fundamental question of Jewish law. Analysis of the halakhic permissibility of return of portions of sanctified territory involves an examination of the ramifications of the mizvah concerning settlement in the Land of Israel and of the obligations which flow therefrom.

The passage states that establishing a Jewish commonwealth after the ancestors crossed the Jordan fulfilled a biblical commandment, and asks whether that commandment remains binding after the Temple’s destruction and the ensuing exile.
The establishment of a Jewish commonwealth following the crossing of the Jordan by our ancestors constituted the fulfillment of a biblical commandment. But does this commandment retain its binding force throughout the epoch following the destruction of the Temple and subsequent exile?
The passage describes Eretz Yisrael as a great gift whose holiness provides heavenly assistance for attaining higher levels of serving God, while warning that it can also lead to sin, as reflected in Chazal’s interpretation that exile results from the land causing people to sin.
