Divine Craftsmanship and Bodily Formation

These sources explore the theological meaning of Asher Yatzar—the blessing over bodily functions—through biblical and rabbinic teachings on how God forms and sustains the human body. They emphasize divine wisdom in the body's intricate design, the union of physical matter and living soul, and gratitude for God's ongoing creative presence in human embodiment.

What the sources say

The foundational source for the brachah itself is Berakhot 60b, where the formula praises God for forming man in wisdom and creating him with openings and cavities, declaring that were even one of them to rupture or become blocked it would be impossible to survive even briefly — making the body's hidden plumbing itself an occasion for praise. Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 6:1 codifies this, explaining that the wisdom lies in the marvelous construction of the human being, comparing the body to a windskin full of orifices, and detailing that both the external openings and the internal hollow organs must function in delicate balance for life to continue.

Midrash Tanchuma, Shmini 8:1 reads the words חלולים חלולים as numerically equivalent to 248, corresponding to the count of a person's limbs, tying the blessing's language directly to the full structure of the body. Berakhot 61b extends this wonder to the internal organs' individual functions — the liver's anger, the gall bladder's calming drop, the spleen's laughter — showing that the body's design is not only structural but functionally interdependent, such that even a reversal of roles between organs threatens life.

Tanach passages reinforce that the forming of the body is itself testimony to divine craftsmanship: Tehillim 139:13-15 speaks of being formed in secret and knit together in the depths of the earth, Iyov 10:8-12 describes being clothed in skin and flesh and woven of bones and sinews, and Yeshayahu 64:7 likens the human being to clay shaped by the divine Potter — all situating the physical body as the deliberate handiwork of God rather than accident.

Modern halachic writers extend the meaning beyond gratitude for mere function. Peninei Halakhah, Berakhot 13:12 states that the brachah thanks God for the whole bodily system working in wisdom, down to the hollow organs and the passages for breathing and eating, and marvels further at how the spiritual soul is bound to the physical body, so that illness of the body prevents the soul's expression and death results in its departure. Kitzur Shulchan Arukh Yalkut Yosef, Orach Chaim 6:1 similarly directs reflection on the wondrous wisdom by which the body's systems, composed of countless cells each functioning precisely and defending against constant microbial threat, testify against those who deny divine providence over the lowly world.

The hasidic and kabbalistic sources locate a deeper purpose in this physical formation. Tanya, Likkutei Amarim 36 teaches that the entire chain of worlds descends specifically so that God should have a dwelling in the lowest, most concealed realm, and Tanya, Likkutei Amarim 49 states that the purpose of all these contractions is the creation of the material human body itself, so that a person can elevate his divine and vivifying souls together with the body's powers back to God. Sefat Emet, Toldot 25:3 frames this as the soul being placed into the body precisely so that the vitality hidden within the body can be drawn out through human service, since the essential work of a person in this world is to actualize that concealed life-force.

Other acharonic and kabbalistic voices stress the gap between body and soul as the very point of the formation. Da'at Tevunot 70 describes the body as dense, dark matter unfit on its own for divine light, into which the pure soul is breathed specifically to refine and elevate it to the level of ministering angels. Da'at Tevunot 80 adds that the body's division into distinct organs, each for its own function, contrasts with the soul's unity, since the body was created through concealment of the divine countenance while the soul was created through its illumination. Sulam on Zohar, Vayeshev 156 states that every limb of the human being corresponds to a supernal rung of wisdom, and that once the body is properly formed in all its limbs, God joins with it by infusing a holy soul so that the person can walk in the ways of Torah.

Rishonic philosophical sources draw out the wisdom-theme further. Mishneh Torah, Foundations of the Torah 2:2 teaches that contemplating God's wondrous creations leads a person to love and praise God while also recognizing his own smallness before infinite Wisdom. Mishneh Torah, Human Dispositions 3:3 rules that a person must keep the body whole and strong precisely so the soul can be fit to know God, since one cannot grasp wisdom while hungry, ill, or in pain. Duties of the Heart, Second Treatise 5:18 catalogues the specific utility of each limb — hands for taking, feet for walking, eyes for seeing, the liver for refining food — as proof that the body's structure itself calls for reflection and gratitude.

Tzitz Eliezer (19:35) interprets the phrase in the blessing concerning God's image and likeness as referring to the soul, a portion drawn from the divine realm above, and explains that it is precisely because the soul is so elevated that the body and physical matter remain comparatively weak and vulnerable — framing the brachah's wonder as a statement about the soul-body relationship rather than the body alone.

Other readings surfaced here address the same theme without displacing it: Chazon Ish Emunah uBitachon 1 describes the wise formation of limbs such as the legs, eyes, and hands as meaningless without the breath and spirit of life infused into them, and the Rebbe Rashab (Toras Shalom, Sicha 14) explains that the body is formed from the lowest elements, dust, specifically to serve as a vessel for the soul descending from the higher realms to manifest itself within it.

Berakhot 60b

Berakhot 60b:1-2

The Talmud records the formulation and placement of the blessing thanking God for forming human beings with openings and cavities, and for preserving the body's functional integrity.

One who enters a bathroom says to the angels who accompany him at all times: Be honored, honorable holy ones, servants of the One on High, give honor to the God of Israel, leave me until I enter and do my will and come back to you. Abaye said: A person should not say this, lest they abandon him and go. Rather he should say: Guard me, guard me, help me, help me, support me, support me, wait for me, wait for me until I enter and come out, as this is the way of man. Upon exiting, one says: Blessed…Who formed man in wisdom, and created in him many orifices and cavities. It is revealed and known before the throne of Your glory that were one of them to be ruptured or blocked, it would be impossible to survive and stand before You. The Gemara asks: With what should one conclude this blessing? Rav said: One should conclude: Blessed…Healer of the sick. Shmuel said: Abba, Rav, has rendered everyone sick. Rather, one should say: Healer of all flesh. Rav Sheshet said: One should conclude: Who performs wondrous deeds. Rav Pappa said: Therefore, let us say them both: Healer of all flesh, Who performs wondrous deeds.

Berakhot 61b:1

The sugya discusses the extraordinary structure of the human body and its openings, framing bodily design as evidence of divine wisdom and providence.

and the lungs draw all kinds of liquids, the liver becomes angry, the gall bladder injects a drop of gall into the liver and allays anger, the spleen laughs, the maw grinds the food, and the stomach brings sleep, and the nose awakens. If they reversed roles such that the organ which brings on sleep were to awaken, or the organ which awakens were to bring on sleep, the individual would gradually deteriorate. It was taught: If both bring on sleep or both awaken, the person immediately dies.

Niddah 30b

Niddah 30b:18-20

The account of gestation describes the fetus's bodily development and divine guardianship in the womb, supplying a profound rabbinic context for thanking God as the body's shaper.

§ Rabbi Samlai taught: To what is a fetus in its mother’s womb comparable? To a folded notebook [lefinkas]. And it rests with its hands on its two sides of its head, at the temples, its two arms [atzilav] on its two knees, and its two heels on its two buttocks, and its head rests between its knees, and its mouth is closed, and its umbilicus is open. And it eats from what its mother eats, and it drinks from what its mother drinks, and it does not emit excrement lest it kill its mother. But once it emerges into the airspace of the world, the closed limb, i.e., its mouth, opens, and the open limb, its umbilicus, closes, as otherwise it cannot live for even one hour. And a candle is lit for it above its head, and it gazes from one end of the world to the other, as it is stated: “When His lamp shined above my head, and by His light I walked through darkness” (Job 29:3). And do not wonder how one can see from one end of the world to the other, as a person can sleep here, in this location, and see a dream that takes place in a place as distant as Spain [beAspamya]. And there are no days when a person is in a more blissful state than those days when he is a fetus in his mother’s womb, as it is stated in the previous verse: “If only I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me” (Job 29:2). And the proof that this verse is referring to gestation is as follows: Which are the days that have months but do not have years? You must say that these are the months of gestation.

Rambam analyzes divine wisdom and providence in the natural order, offering philosophical tools for understanding how bodily structure can inspire recognition of the Creator without reducing the prayer to anatomy alone.

IT might be thought that the Hebrew words temunah and tabnit have one and the same meaning, but this is not the case. Tabnit, derived from the verb banah (he built), signifies the build and construction of a thing—that is to say, its figure, whether square, round, triangular, or of any other shape. Comp. “the pattern (tabnit) of the Tabernacle and the pattern (tabnit) of all its vessels” (Exod. 25:9); “according to the pattern (tabnit) which thou wast shown upon the mount” (Exod. 25:40); “the form of any bird” (Deut. 4:17); “the form (tabnit) of a hand” (Ezek. 8:3); “the pattern (tabnit) of the porch” (1 Chron. 28:11). In all these quotations it is the shape which is referred to. Therefore the Hebrew language never employs the word tabnit in speaking of the qualities of God Almighty. The term temunah, on the other hand, is used in the Bible in three different senses. It signifies, first, the outlines of things which are perceived by our bodily senses, i.e., their shape and form; as, e.g., “And ye make an image the form (temunat) of some likeness” (Deut. 4:16); “for ye saw no likeness” (temunah) (Deut. 4:15). Secondly, the forms of our imagination, i.e., the impressions retained in imagination when the objects have ceased to affect our senses. In this sense it is used in the passage which begins “In thoughts from the visions of the night” (Job 4:13), and which concludes “it remained but I could not recognize its sight, only an image—temunah—was before my eyes,” i.e., an image which presented itself to my sight during sleep. Thirdly, the true form of an object, which is perceived only by the intellect: and it is in this third signification that the term is applied to God. The words “And the similitude of the Lord shall he behold” (Num. 12:8) therefore mean “he shall comprehend the true essence of the Lord.”

Ibn Ezra on Genesis 2:3

Ibn Ezra explains that God’s blessing adds goodness, renewing in bodies the generative power and in souls the power of perception and intellect; “which God created to make” refers to the roots of all species, endowed with the power to produce their forms.

Ramban

Ramban

The passage portrays the human being as embodying two opposing forces—water and fire, corresponding to the good and evil inclinations and to positive and negative commandments—and explains that mitzvot, prayer, fasting, and other religious practices train the evil inclination to submit to the good inclination and the body to follow the soul.

Ibn Ezra on Exodus 23:25

Ibn Ezra explains that the soul, spirit, and appetitive faculty are distinct forces associated with the brain, heart, and liver, and that Torah strengthens the higher soul so the body submits to it rather than governing it.

Rabbeinu Bahya, Vayikra 11:44

Rabbeinu Bahya, Vayikra 11:44

The passage states that the Sages interpret a warning to keep one's body and hands clean as a form of separation, connecting washing before and after meals to sanctification, and teaching that during eating and drinking—which can distract from spiritual focus—a person should sanctify themselves through three stages: two involving bodily purity and one involving spiritual elevation through pleasant scent, in order to be worthy of blessing God.

Ibn Ezra on Genesis 1:1

Ibn Ezra on Genesis 1:1

Ibn Ezra distinguishes two meanings of ברא: creation of something new, including light’s opposite, darkness, and the creation of living beings, and the related sense of cutting, assigning, or setting a defined boundary.

Tomer Devorah 1

Tomer Devorah 1:1

The opening discussion of divine attributes and human imitation places embodied ethical action within a larger theology of reflecting divine compassion, a complementary spiritual reading of bodily life.

Chapter 1 - That it is fitting for a person to resemble his Creator: It is fitting for a person to resemble his Creator and then he will be [configured] in the secret of the Highest Form, [both] in image and likeness. As if he is alike in his body but not in his actions, he betrays the Form; and they will say about him, "A lovely form, but ugly deeds." As behold, the essence of the Highest Image and Likeness is His actions. And what will it benefit him to have the structure of his limbs like the Highest Form, but not resemble his Creator in his actions? Therefore it is fitting that he should [make his actions] resemble the actions of the Crown (Keter), which are the thirteen highest traits of mercy. And they are hinted to in the secret of the verses (Michah 7:18-20), "Who is a power like You; He will again have mercy on us; You shall give truth." If so, it is fitting that these thirteen traits [also] be found in man. And now we will explain these thirteen actions that are fitting to be with him.

Shenei Luchot HaBerit, Torah Shebikhtav, Pinchas, Torah Ohr:1

Shelah interprets “who formed the human being with wisdom” as the intended unity of a refined body and soul devoted to God, explaining that human corruption made the body impure and subject to death until the future redemption, when creation will be renewed, body and soul reunited, and humanity will live eternally.

Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 8 12:2

Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 8 12:2

Ramhal distinguishes between the soul, called “My son,” and the body, called “My servant,” explaining that the soul is sent into the world to rectify the body, through which the splendor of holiness is ultimately magnified.

Ramhal describes the body as coarse and dark, prone to evil desires and harmful occurrences, while the pure soul is placed within it to purify and sanctify it, ultimately elevating it from its material lowliness to the level of ministering angels.

HaKtav VeHaKabalah, Genesis 1:1

HaKtav VeHaKabalah, Genesis 1:1

Haktav Vehakabalah derives the name Elohim from אלה, explaining it as denoting God’s constant presence before and supervision of every individual, with the name’s plural form expressing the unity that extends through this universal oversight; divine influence is likewise described as the illumination of God’s face, while its withholding is called concealment of the face.

Da'at Tevunot 80

Da'at Tevunot 80:3

Ramhal explains that the body’s distinct organs and their functions reflect the multiplicity of divine modes of action under hester panim, while the soul’s undivided powers reflect the unity associated with illumination of the divine countenance; he illustrates this through “Let us make man in our form, like our image,” relating human eyes, ears, and mouth to divine seeing, hearing, and speech.

And you will see further, that the body has divisions of organs and parts, each one with its utility, for the eye sees and does not hear, and the ear hears and does not see; which is not the case with the soul, that all of the powers which are within it without any of the division into organs like the organs of the body, rather all of it is in every part, and this is certain. Now you will see how this emerges thoughtfully from the introduction which we heard, that the body is created through hiding of haShem's countenance and the soul through the illumination of His countenance. And you will see a great and fundamental introduction, have you not already heard that perfection is one, for there is no relevance to deficiency or excess in actual perfection. But when the Holy One blessed is He does not want to work through his perfection, then there are many ways for The Place to reward or to punish, each person according to their actions, as was explained earlier. And when the decree of the heavenly wisdom is to demonstrate in the creation itself that He created the path and order in which He created it, as we explained, therefore with regard to hiding of His countenance - like its ways are many so did he want to make this creation with many parts and different organs, that they should be actual parallels to all the parts of his properties may He be blessed. This is the mater that I mentioned to you, that for this was it said, "Let us make man in our form, like our image", for with all the elevated characteristics which can be discerned in His glory may He be blessed, when he acts according to the value of his creations, so shall be found divisions in the image of this man; as an example, the eye- under the eye of his interaction who supervises all of the inhabitants of the earth to judge all their actions, like the matter that is said (Genesis 18:21), "I shall descend and will see" - to teach you that a judge cannot judge other than that which his eyes see (Sanhedrin 6b). The ears of man - correspond to the way that the Holy One blessed is he sits and listens to the prayers of all of mankind and all of their praises, and so is it said (Exodus 2:24), "And the Lord heard their cry..."; and our Sages may their memory be blessed said (Avot 2:1), "Know who is above you - a watchful eye and a listening ear". The mouth of man - because the mouth of haShem speaks in visions to his prophets and the splendor of his voice is heard by his angels who possess fortitude of strength and do his will. And similarly like this, all of the other parts of the body can be explained in detail, parallel in their appearance and their matters to His characteristics may He be blessed, that he prepared to activate his creations. And the making of man is right and left, with duplication of his parts to here and there, two eyes, two ears, two hands, to lets, as His characteristics hay he be blessed are also double - whether for benevolence or for His rod, to the right for merit or to the left for obligation. Is this not the path that the heavenly will grasped after concealing his perfection which equilibrates everything towards the good. And indeed, like the parts of the body are discerned and differentiated according to their purpose, so to all of the occurrences of man in the hiding of haShem's countenance revolve and change in His strategy to activate them, like all that which we see in the passage of time, in everyday events. Now we will understand this matter itself in regard to the body and soul. For the body has parts and specific limbs, with specific functions with limitations; but the soul, in and of itself is it not one matter, external to the matters of the body altogether, and all of its ways are other ways, different from the ways of the body entirely, even in the matter of the senses themselves, but since it actuates all of the actions of the body when it [the soul] is in it[the body], it [the soul] hears with the ears of the body, it sees with the eyes of the body, and with all like this, therefore it is called seer, hearer, and all of the other appellations, but it is not that it has any of these ways at all. For even though it is the soul alone that sees, and not the body which is inanimate, and we find that it sees things the way that people in their completeness see in truth; this is not the way it [the soul] sees at all, for it has an entirely different way from the way of the senses of the body, and this is a way that a person while in the body is unable to appreciate. But since it is affected by the rule of the eye to see according to the rule engraved in it, therefore we say the it is the seer, and so for all of the other senses. However the rule is that the soul is one type of creation distant in its matter from all the ways of the body entirely, but it is created in its rule to do all that is rooted in the limbs of the body according to their nature. And here it grasps these rules, and does all these actions with the body, and therefore they all interact with it. And behold this is precisely like the matter of His perfection may he be blessed, regarding the specific qualities which he wanted in them, for there is not matter of these qualities in perfection but rather these are the specific qualities which he wanted, limited and measured in the measures that he wanted for them. But since He may He be blessed - the perfect in his perfection - he acts according to these qualities, therefore we refer by these names and appellations, and these actions and descriptions are ascribed to him, even though according to his perfection simply in truth in all of these matters, and he has no relationship from the aspect of Himself with any of these ways and these activities at all:

Halakhot Ketanot, Part I 137:1-3

Jacob Chagiz explains that although all of God’s works are ultimately for good, human misuse and the bodily harm associated with intercourse may account for not instituting a blessing beforehand; he adds that intercourse resembles discharging an obligation rather than performing an independently initiated mitzvah, and that the wording of Asher Yatzar would not fit because bodily functions lack a fixed limit.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 36:1

The chapter explains that the purpose of creation is the revelation of divine presence in the lower, physical world, a framework for seeing the functioning body as a vessel for holiness.

It is a well-known Rabbinic statement that the purpose of the creation of this world is that the Holy One, blessed is He, desired to have an abode in the lower worlds. This is the concept of the hishtalshelut (downward gradation) of the worlds and their descent, degree by degree, through a multitude of “garments” which screen the light and life that emanate from Him, until there was created this material and gross world, the lowest in degree, than which there is none lower in the aspect of concealment of His light, blessed be He; [a world of] doubled and redoubled darkness, so much so that it is full of kelipot and the sitra achara which actually oppose G–d, saying: “I am, and there is nothing else besides me.” Clearly, the purpose of the hishtalshelut of the worlds and their descent, degree by degree, is not for the sake of the higher worlds, because for them this is a descent from the light of His Countenance, blessed be He. But the ultimate purpose [of creation] is this lowest world, for such was His will, blessed be He, that He shall have satisfaction when the sitra achara is subdued and the darkness is turned to light, so that the Divine light of the En Sof, blessed is He, shall shine forth in the place of the darkness and sitra achara throughout this world, all the more strongly and intensely, with the excellence of light emerging from darkness, than its effulgence in the higher worlds, where it shines through “garments” and in concealment of the Countenance, which screen and conceal the light of the En Sof, blessed is He, in order that they should not dissolve out of existence.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 49:4-5

The chapter develops gratitude for God's continual creation and sustaining kindness, resonating with Asher Yatzar's acknowledgment that bodily life is continuously preserved by divine generosity.

The purpose of all the “contractions” is the creation of the material human body and the subjugation of the sitra achara to bring about the pre-eminence of light supplanting darkness—when a person elevates his divine soul and his vivifying soul together with their garments and all the powers of the body to G–d alone, as has been discussed earlier at length, for this is the purpose of the descent of the worlds. To quote [again] “As water mirrors the reflection of a face”: As the Holy One, blessed is He, has, as it were, laid down and set aside, figuratively speaking, His great infinite light and has stored it away and concealed it by means of three different kinds of “contractions”—and all this because of His love for lowly man, in order to raise him up to G–d, for “Love impels the flesh,” how much more, and an infinite number of times more, is it fitting that a man also should relinquish and set aside all he possesses, both spiritually and physically, and renounce everything in order to cleave to Him, blessed be He, with attachment, desire, and longing, without any hindrance, within or without, neither of body nor soul, nor money, nor wife and children. Then follows the second blessing, “With an everlasting love You have loved us, L–rd, our G–d.” That is to say that He set aside all the supernal, holy hosts and caused His Shechinah to dwell upon us, so that He be called “our G–d,” in the same sense that He is called “the G–d of Abraham,” as explained earlier. This is because “love impels the flesh.” Therefore it is called ahavat olam (“worldly love”), for this is the so-called “contraction” of His great and infinite light, taking on the garb of finitude, which is called olam (“world”), for the sake of the love of His people Israel, in order to bring them near to Him, that they might be absorbed into His Unity and Oneness, blessed be He.

Sefat Emet, Genesis, Toldot 25:3

Sfas Emes explains that God gave the soul to humanity so that it could enliven the body, which contains hidden vitality; a person’s central task in this world is to bring that latent bodily life into actuality, while the soul itself is holy.

Maamarim Melukatim

The passage states that the purpose of creation is for Torah to transform the entire world into a dwelling for God, requiring a physical human body whose soul can elevate even the lowest material existence, a power attributed specifically to souls rather than angels.

Kuntres Umaayan Maamar 15

The passage describes creation as the miraculous joining of spirituality and physicality, identifying the soul as light and the body as its vessel, while noting that human bodily formation differs from that of other creatures.

Sefat Emet, Deuteronomy, Ki Tavo 4:3

Sfas Emes states that Torah teaches a person to transcend bodily materiality, while the Land of Israel and the Temple sanctify and unite the body with the soul; this bodily rectification, which was lacking before entering the Land, is achieved through ביטול of the body’s materiality by Torah knowledge and through exile.

Kedushat Levi, Parashat Tazria

Kedushat Levi, Leviticus, Tazria 1

Kedushat Levi interprets “on the eighth day” as teaching that compassion awakened by Israel’s actions is more beloved to God than compassion initiated above, and applies the imagery of sowing, pregnancy, and birth to awakening, intending, and performing mitzvot.

Leviticus 12,2. “when a woman brings forth seed and gives ‎birth to a male infant,….on the eight’s day the flesh of his ‎foreskin must be removed.” Many scholars have asked ‎what conceptual link there is of the circumcision having to be ‎performed on the eight’s day after infant’s birth. ‎‎[Naturally, the Torah’s command, dating back to the ‎circumcision of Yitzchok was accepted without question. ‎Ed.] [The reader may not find the author’s ‎answer to the question below as fitting the question after having ‎read it. I therefore take the liberty of prefacing his treatment of ‎the subject by reminding the reader that the commandment to be ‎circumcised is addressed to the person himself, not to his father ‎or some other authority. The author addresses the question of ‎why the timing of the circumcision has been advanced so much ‎by the Torah that the infant in question evidently is unable to ‎perform the act himself. In other words, the question as to the ‎timing when the circumcision has to be performed could equally ‎well have been asked if the Torah had decreed the ninth day after ‎the child’s birth, when according to halachah, the function ‎of the penis as a male organ becomes relevant for the first time. ‎Ed.] We have learned in the Zohar II,13 that G’d created the ‎various universes in order that He be perceived by His creatures ‎as ‎רחום וחנון‎, ”compassionate and graceful;” on occasion G’d’s ‎compassion is “awakened” by acts performed by the Jewish ‎people, as our sages said in Yevamot 64 where the question ‎is asked from where we have proof in the holy Scriptures that ‎G’d longs to hear the prayers of the righteous. Apart from ‎quoting a verse in Isaiah, the proof is deduced from the fact that ‎Sarah, Rivkah and Rachel were not granted children until they ‎had turned to G’d in prayer.‎ What we learn from the above is that although G’d initiates ‎compassion and grace, He prefers the human input, i.e. when ‎human beings demonstrate their belief in Him through praying ‎to Him for their needs.‎‎ This is the allusion contained in the opening verse of our ‎portion ‎אשה כי תזריע וילדה זכר‎, “when the woman (simile for ‎human beings in their capacity as “recipients,”) wishes to arouse ‎heavenly compassion, ‎תזריע‎, (as simile for the source of all ‎compassion), ‎וילדה זכר‎, as a result she will give birth (successfully ‎awaken) the masculine attribute of G’d, the source of all ‎compassion, (compassion spelled with a capital C.) The overall ‎message of our verse is that when G’d’s compassion is awakened ‎through action by His creatures, it is strengthened immeasurably. ‎This concept is reflected in the commandment to circumcise the ‎new born infant already on the eight’s day of his life.‎ The whole idea is explained best when we consider the story ‎of the blasphemer who wanted to know from Rabbi Akiva ‎whether man’s creative actions are more impressive and pleasing ‎than G’d’s actions. (Compare Tanchuma Tazria 5) Without ‎repeating the entire debate related there in which the blasphemer ‎argued that man could not create a universe, Rabbi Akiva who ‎had first pointed out that the fact that we must cut the baby’s ‎umbilical cord, proves that man’s actions are more important. ‎Rabbi Akiva goes on to explain that man’s being born with a ‎foreskin which subsequently is removed is not proof of G’d’s ‎inadequacy, but, on the contrary, is proof that G’d desires for ‎man to perform the “final” touch before a human being (male) is ‎complete, i.e. perfect. G’d chose the earliest possible time in the ‎infant’s life to do this, i.e. the eight’s day, as prior to this the ‎operation endangers the life of the infant. By performing this ‎commandment at the correct time, the father/mohel ‎becomes the instrument that opens the gates to G’d’s compassion ‎in the celestial regions.‎ Every human being, until he became a viable human being, ‎had to undergo three stages in that development, insemination, ‎embryonic existence in the mother’s womb, pregnancy, and ‎birth. The stage we described as insemination is understood in the ‎parlance of Kabbalists, as ‎התעוררות‎, a form of awakening, arousal, ‎which calls on man’s heart to serve his Master, the Creator. The ‎stage known as pregnancy is reached when an individual is ready ‎and willing to fulfill G’d’s commandments. Finally, birth, is the ‎stage when man is actively engaged in performing the ‎commandments of the Torah. This is what our sages in Rosh ‎‎Hashanah 4 alluded to when they said, quoting psalms 45,10 ‎נצבה שגל לימינך בכתם אופיר‎, “a consort stood at our right decked in ‎gold from Ophir.” They understood the psalmist to say that as a ‎reward for the Israelites deriving more pleasure from serving the ‎Lord than the average person experiences when engaging in ‎marital intercourse, ‎שגל‎, they have been rewarded with gold from ‎Ophir. [the source of the most precious gold. Ed.]‎ On the face of it, we must wonder what prompted the ‎psalmist to make a comparison between a physical sensation, ‎such as having sexual relations, with the spiritual experience of ‎serving the Lord? The performance of the sexual act is often an act of indulging ‎one’s libido in sins of the most severe kind, so what bearing does ‎this have on how we serve the Lord?‎ ‎I believe that what the psalmist, a descendant of Korach, had ‎in mind when he said this was that the sexual act consists of ‎reciprocal parts played by the ‎משפיע‎, the initiator, the male, the ‎משפיע‎, and the recipient, the woman, the ‎מקבל‎. This is the reason ‎why the sages chose to emphasize the feeling of lust of the ‎person indulging in initiating forbidden sexual intercourse, as it is ‎contrasted by the psalmist with the exact opposite, the ‎overwhelming desire by the Jewish man to please his Creator by ‎performing His commandments with an enthusiasm similar to ‎the sinner enjoying forbidden sex. This is also what the Zohar we quoted had alluded to ‎when he said that from the moment a woman has become ‎pregnant she concentrates exclusively on looking forward to the ‎day she gives birth to a male infant. The “woman” in the ‎‎Zohar is a simile for the collective soul of the Jewish people, ‎כנסת ישראל‎, and the term “pregnancy,” refers to the moment ‎when the Jewish people made the decision to serve the Lord, ‎whereas the “birth” in that line of the Zohar, refers to the ‎time when the Jewish people collectively have made good on their ‎resolution to serve the Lord. When the “woman” in the ‎‎Zohar is viewed as looking forward anxiously to giving birth ‎to a male child, the simile describes the hope of the collective soul ‎of the Jewish people to perform its service of the Lord in such a ‎manner that it is recognized as ‎זכר‎, male, as then it will be the ‎trigger for releasing G’d’s largesse in abundant measure ‎throughout the universe‎

recovered from “Sefat Emet on the Torah, Bereshit 1900”

Sefat Emet, Genesis, Bereshit

Sefat Emet, Genesis, Bereshit 11:2-3

The passage explains that just as an individual person's body must be perfected before receiving a soul, and then receives an additional soul in proportion to their righteous deeds, so too creation as a whole was formed and perfected through the particular actions of the righteous before receiving Shabbat as its soul, and the world continues to be sustained by those who study Torah and perform good deeds.

The Midrash (Bereishis Rabba 10:2) explains that the word ויכלו (vayechulu) is related to כלי (vessels), indicating creation as a vessel for Hashem. The concept involves klal-prat-klal, where creation could have been done with one utterance (Bereishis), the source of everything. The division into ten utterances allows for the punishment of evildoers and the reward of the righteous, who unify the parts back into a whole. On an individual level, many things need repair (prat), and tzadikim unify these parts with the klal. This correction, more precious to Hashem, is the true essence of creation. This is reflected in the Mishnah in Avot (4:17), emphasizing the value of teshuva and good deeds in this world. The phrase "Hashem saw everything He created and it was very good" (ויכלו) signifies this completion, awakening the source and leading to Shabbos. Shabbos, blessed and sanctified, is the soul of creation, bringing unity and an extra level of spiritual completion. In the future, this will culminate in a day that is entirely Shabbos. Currently, evildoers disrupt this unity, but Bnei Yisrael, who achieve unification, experience a taste of the world to come through the "Sukkah of Shalom" on Shabbos. True perfection will only be achieved when the name of Amalek is erased, and all parts are unified in serving Hashem. The Midrash explains that "I will be to Him a Amon - confidant" (אמון) connects to אומן (craftsman), meaning Hashem used the Torah as a blueprint for creation. The phrase "I will be" (future tense) signifies that the world continues to exist through those who engage in Torah. The verse "And He saw everything that He created and it was very good" refers to Hashem seeing the righteous deeds of tzadikim, whose engagement with Torah sustains the world. This justifies the creation in ten utterances, rewarding tzadikim who maintain it. This concept will be fully realized in the future when everything is perfected through the power of Torah and the righteous. The term "I will be" indicates that the Torah's wisdom will ultimately be proven as the best plan, fulfilling its purpose perfectly.

Rav Eliezer Melamed (Peninei Halakhah, Berakhot 13:12)

Peninei Halakhah, Berakhot 13:12

The passage explains that the Sages instituted Asher Yatzar as praise and thanksgiving for the body’s ability to expel waste, while also acknowledging the wondrous design of its organs, openings, and waste-removal systems and encouraging proper intent while healthy.

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh Yalkut Yosef, Orach Chaim 6:1

Rav Yitzchak Yosef describes the body’s intricate cellular systems, digestion, and defenses against disease as expressions of God’s wisdom and care, warranting joyful gratitude; the blessing also affirms divine providence over the physical world and the preservation of the soul within the body.

Sulam on Zohar, Vayeshev 156

Sulam on Zohar, Vayeshev 156

Sulam’s passage says that God fashioned the human being in the likeness of the heavenly pattern, with each limb corresponding to a distinct spiritual level; once the body is properly formed, God joins with it and places a holy soul within it to guide the person in Torah and mitzvot and bring about proper refinement.

Rav Eliezer Melamed (Peninei Halakhah, Women's Prayer 16:11)

Peninei Halakhah, Women's Prayer 16:11

The passage states that the Torah, especially the Shema, brings life and healing; its 248 words correspond to the body's 248 limbs, with the chazan adding three words to complete the count, while women reciting individually say “Kel Melekh ne’eman” and receive blessing for their distinctive limbs through the blessing of the shared 248 limbs.

The Torah gives life and health to the world and to humanity. This is especially true of Shema, which contains the principles of faith and the fulfillment of the mitzvot. The Sages teach that Shema is comprised of 248 words, just as there are 248 limbs in the human body; when one recites Shema properly, each and every limb corresponds to one word and is healed by it. However, in the three paragraphs of Shema there are actually 245 words. In order to reach 248, the ḥazan repeats the last three words, “Hashem Elokeikhem emet” (“the Lord, your God, is true”), thereby completing the count to 248 (Zohar Ḥadash Ruth 95:1; see also Peninei Halakha: Prayer 15:12). Women, who do not pray in the synagogue, do not hear the ḥazan, and therefore must practice one would when praying individually. That is, according to Ashkenazic custom, before beginning Shema she says, “Kel Melekh ne’eman” (“God, faithful King”). Even though women have 252 limbs, as the womb has two doors and two hinges (Bekhorot 45a), since all people have 248 limbs, perhaps it is most important to direct the blessings toward them, and the blessing will then continue to the limbs unique to women (Minḥat Elazar 2:28; Ha-elef Lekha Shlomo OḤ 120).

Rav Kook on Teshuvah and Soul Renewal

These sources explore teshuvah as a transformative journey of the soul's return to God, moving beyond mere repentance of sin to an inner renewal and elevation of the entire self. The texts trace how classical rabbinic and medieval Jewish philosophy establish teshuvah's power to remake a person, a vision Rav Kook deepens through mystical and phenomenological insight.
