Birur Nitzotzos: Elevating Sacred Sparks

Hasidic teachings on how serving God through physical and mundane actions elevates hidden divine sparks concealed within material reality. Sources explore the spiritual mechanics of extracting holiness from physicality and restoring divine unity through intentional service.

What the sources say

The foundational cosmological premise is that every created thing contains a hidden divine vitality: the Sefat Emet (Bereishit, Vayera 1:3) teaches that in every matter there is a point of life-force from the Holy One, and that only the external 'klipa' conceals it — once the outer husk is removed, that inner point is revealed of itself; the Sefat Emet (Bereishit, Toldot 1:3) adds that in every object there is a holy spark that sustains it, hidden by nature and externality, and that the very purpose of creation is for a human being to recognize and clarify that all vitality derives from the Holy One.

The Zoharic teaching that underlies the entire structure is that every lower thing has a root above, and that a physical act performed below awakens a corresponding movement in the upper worlds: the Sulam on Zohar (Vayechi 210) explains that the servants of the Holy King bind lower things to their supernal roots through their deeds, and the Sulam on Zohar (Emor 293) specifies the operative principle — a deed below is required in order to arouse the corresponding reality above.

The Tanya develops the precise mechanics of birur as it operates through permitted physical things: Tanya, Iggeret HaKodesh 26 explains that what is permitted (muttar) is not 'tied' to the kelipah and can ascend when a person eats it with intention toward God — from the energy extracted from that food, the letters of Torah and prayer are formed and rise upward — and it further specifies that malkhut of Atzilut vests itself in kelipat nogah in order to extract the sparks that fell with Adam's sin and the 288 sparks that fell with the shevirat hakelim.

Tanya, Likkutei Amarim 7 gives the paradigmatic example of this elevation: one who eats rich food and drinks wine in order to broaden his mind for the service of God thereby causes the good intermingled in that food to be separated (nivrar) from the bad, to prevail, and to ascend and be absorbed into holiness — whereas Tanya, Likkutei Amarim 8 draws the critical boundary, teaching that the vitality of forbidden food cannot ascend or be clothed in words of Torah and prayer no matter how sincere the intention, because it remains bound (assur) in the power of the three wholly impure kelipot.

The elevation of sparks through mitzvot performed with physical objects is given its own formulation in Tanya, Likkutei Amarim 37, which teaches that by performing a commandment a person draws down a flow of the light of Ein Sof from above to be clothed in the corporeality of this world — in something that previously stood under the dominion of kelipat nogah and received its vitality from it — thereby elevating objects such as parchment for tefillin and an etrog from their prior state; and Tanya, Likkutei Amarim 37:17 extends this to the soul itself, stating that the divine soul descends into the world precisely to refine the vital soul (nefesh ha-behamit) and its share of this world, separating it from the evil of the three impure kelipot and elevating it to be bound and unified with the light of Ein Sof.

The Sefat Emet (Shemot, Shemot 10:2) applies this schema to Jewish history, teaching in the name of the Sages that the Egyptian exile — and all exiles — were for the purpose of elevating the holy sparks scattered throughout those places, and that when the good multiplies over the evil, the good sparks are separated out from the mixture; the Shem MiShmuel (Passover 6) elaborates on this through the Arizal's interpretation that all the holy sparks dispersed throughout the world gathered into Egypt and Israel extracted them all — with each person drawn toward the sparks belonging to the root of his own soul, and this constituting the completion of their own souls.

Likutei Moharan (1:2) teaches that the Jewish person must always gaze upon the inner intelligence (sekhel) present in every thing and bind himself to that wisdom, so that the intelligence within each thing may illuminate him and draw him closer to God through that very thing — for the inner intelligence is a great light that shines for a person in all his ways; and Likutei Moharan (75:10) frames this as an ongoing cosmic project, stating that from the earthly realm the sparks are elevated and peace is made — and that this birur ha-nitzotzot is accomplished every day until the coming of Mashiach.

Likkutei Torah (Behar 1) illuminates the inner structure of the process through the analogy of planting: just as a seed contains a hidden dimension of the earth's germinating power and, when buried and dissolved, releases that power back to the general force of growth — so too the hidden divine vitality compressed within physical things must, through the act of service, be returned and elevated to its source.

Tanya, Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah 7 grounds the entire avoda in a metaphysics of divine omnipresence: God's Thought and Knowledge actually encompass every creature, and His knowing is identical with the creature's life-force and its being brought from nothingness into existence — meaning the divine vitality is not merely 'within' things but is the very act of their continued existence, which is why it can be elevated; Derekh Mitzvotekha (The Mitzvah of Belief in God 1) reinforces this by teaching that the entire world is like one great body, and the life-force animating each being is the divine radiance that God shines and flows throughout it.

מכתב מאליהו, חלק ג עמוד קיח states the practical upshot in concentrated form: the essence of our service is to nullify the evil and remove the dulling of our hearts, after which the good — which is the divine light shining into our hearts — is revealed of itself, and this is the meaning of the rabbinic dictum that Torah and mitzvot were given only to refine (letzaref) humanity — to purify them so that the good may shine within them; Contemporary Halakhic Problems (Vol. II, Part I, Chapter II) independently cites the same Midrash, noting that the Hebrew letzaref denotes the smelting and refining of precious metals, and that commandments function as the purging agent that separates the noble from the base within a human being.

The Patriarchs and the human mandate in creation are each invoked as templates for this avoda: the Sefat Emet (Bereishit, Toldot 1:3) teaches that all the service of the Patriarchs was to reveal the light of Torah hidden within the act of creation (ma'aseh Bereishit), while Bereishit 2:15 — God placing the human in the garden 'to till it and tend it' — supplies the scriptural grounding for the idea that engagement with the physical world is itself the designated medium of this service, a point that the Rambam (Mishneh Torah, Human Dispositions 3:3) captures in a cognate key: one who walks this path serves God at all times, even during commerce and physical intimacy, because his intention throughout is that his body be whole for the service of God.

For, observe that first it is written here, “of every man whose heart makes him willing ye shall take my offering” (Ex. 25, 2); to wit, of the whole body of the people, including the mixed multitude, as the Holy One, blessed be He, desired to have in the work of the Tabernacle the co-operation of all sections of the people, both the “brain” category and the “shell” category: all were charged with the performance of the work. Subsequently, however, the sections separated, each betaking itself to its own affinity, and so the mixed multitude made the golden calf and led astray numbers who afterwards died, and thus brought upon Israel death and slaughter. The Holy One, blessed be He, then said: “Henceforward the work of the Tabernacle shall be performed from the side of Israel only.” Straightway “Moses assembled all the congregation of the children of Israel… Take ye from among you an offering unto the Lord” (Ibid. 35, 1-5). “From among you” emphatically, but not “from every man whose heart maketh him willing”, as in the previous injunction. Furthermore, as no place of assembly is mentioned, the words, “And Moses assembled”, etc., signify that, as the mixed multitude were mingled among the Israelites, Moses found it necessary to assemble the latter on one side so as to segregate them from the former.’

Ma'avar Yabbok, Sefat Emet:18

The Sefat Emet’s teachings on the Exodus and the spoils of Egypt interpret redemption as the extraction of holiness from a material and spiritually alien environment.

Kedushat Levi’s opening teachings interpret creation and human service as directed toward revealing divine purpose within the world, a recurring foundation for the Hasidic conception of elevation.

2. For the Jew must always focus on the inner intelligence of every matter, and bind himself to the wisdom and inner intelligence that is to be found in each thing. This, so that the intelligence which is in each thing may enlighten him, that he may draw closer to God through that thing. For the inner intelligence is a great light that shines for a person in all his ways. As it is written (Ecclesiastes 8:1), “A person’s wisdom causes his countenance to shine.” It is therefore said of Yosef: “The firstborn of his shor (oxen), grandeur is his” (Deuteronomy 33:17). “Firstborn” corresponds to the inner intelligence, as above. And this is “his shor,” it suggests gazing. For it is necessary to focus on the inner intelligence of every matter. Onkelos renders “grandeur is his” as “radiance is his,” an expression of luminance. For the inner intelligence shines for him in each thing. Even in a place that had been dark and obscure, the inner intelligence shines for him—when he merits focusing on the inner intelligence that is found in each thing—and brings him closer to God.

Hemshech Ayin Beis Vayeitzei

The passage explores the mystical meaning of Jacob's stone at Bethel by examining how the single physical stone becomes "a house of God"—explaining that this transformation involves two modes of revelation (sefiroth): one in which vessels contain divine lights while numbers/measurements define structure, and another in which vessels actually reveal and illuminate the hidden divine lights; it establishes that the highest vessels (such as those of Atziluth) are radiant like clear glass, allowing the divine lights they contain to shine through without concealment rather than obscuring them.

Within each thing exists a point of divine life-force from Hashem, accessible only by removing the external shell called ערלה (foreskin), which conceals it; once this covering is removed, the inner point naturally becomes revealed, and this revelation of hidden interiority within essence is exemplified by Avraham's vision of Hashem after circumcision and by Hashem's perception of all creation as good—a vision that endures eternally, sustains creation itself, and belongs uniquely to one who knows that all the worlds' vitality comes from Hashem's providence.

The Alter Rebbe distinguishes permitted physical things that can be elevated when used for God, from prohibited things that cannot be elevated in the same direct way; intention and purpose determine whether a material act joins holiness.

Hence it is sometimes absorbed within the three unclean kelipot [as is explained in Etz Chaim, Portal 49, beginning of ch. 4, on the authority of the Zohar], and sometimes it is absorbed and elevated to the category and level of holiness, as when the good that is intermingled in it is extracted from the bad, and prevails and ascends until it is absorbed in holiness. Such is the case, for example, of he who eats fat beef and drinks spiced wine in order to broaden his mind for the service of G–d and His Torah; as Rava said, “Wine and fragrance [make a man’s mind more receptive],” or in order to fulfill the command concerning enjoyment of Shabbat and the Festivals. In such a case the vitality of the meat and wine, originating in the kelipat nogah, is distilled and ascends to G–d like a burnt offering and sacrifice. On the other hand, he who belongs to those who gluttonously guzzle meat and quaff wine in order to satisfy their bodily appetites and animal nature, derived from the so-called element of water of the four evil elements contained therein, from which comes the vice of lust—in such case the energy of the meat and wine consumed by him is degraded and absorbed temporarily in the utter evil of the three unclean kelipot, and his body temporarily becomes a garment and vehicle for them, until the person repents and returns to the service of G–d and His Torah. For, inasmuch as the meat and wine were kosher, they have the power to revert and ascend with him when he returns to the service of G–d. This is implied in the terms “permissibility” and “permitted” (muttar), that is to say, that which is not tied and bound by the power of the “extraneous forces” preventing it from returning and ascending to G–d.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 8

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 8:1

Tanya explains that Torah study and mitzvah performance elevate the vitality invested in physical objects, while permissible activities can be elevated when performed for divine service rather than self-indulgence.

There is an additional aspect in the matter of forbidden foods. The reason they are called issur [“chained”] is that even in the case of one who has unwittingly eaten a forbidden food intending it to give him strength to serve G–d by the energy of it, and he has, moreover, actually carried out his intention, having both studied and prayed with the energy of that food, nevertheless the vitality contained therein does not ascend and become clothed in the words of the Torah or prayer, as is the case with permitted foods, by reason of its being held captive in the power of the sitra achara of the three unclean kelipot. This is so even when the prohibition is a Rabbinic enactment, for the words of the Scribes are even more stringent than the words of the Torah, and so forth. Therefore, also the evil impulse (yetzer hara) and the force that strains after forbidden things is a demon of non-Jewish demons, which is the evil impulse of the nations whose souls are derived from the three unclean kelipot. On the other hand, the evil impulse and the craving force after permissible things to satisfy an appetite is a demon of the Jewish demons, for it can be reverted to holiness, as is explained above. Nevertheless, before it has reverted to holiness it is sitra achara and kelipah, and even afterward a trace of it remains attached to the body, since from each item of food and drink are immediately formed blood and flesh of his flesh.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 37

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 37:2

The Alter Rebbe presents mitzvot as the practical means by which the soul’s vitality, together with the material world used in the mitzvah, is elevated and incorporated into divine unity.

For what causes the reward of a commandment is the commandment itself, because by virtue of performing it the person suffuses a flood of light of the En Sof, blessed is He, from above downward, to be clothed in the corporeality of the world in something that was previously under the dominion of the kelipat nogah, from which it had received its vitality. These are all those things that are [ritually] clean and permissible, wherewith the precept of action is performed, viz., parchment used in the tefillin, mezuzah, and Torah scroll, as taught by the Rabbis that nothing is fitting for a sacred purpose which is not clean and permissible for consumption; similarly an etrog which is not orlah; Thus, when a person performs the Divine commandment and will, by means of these [“clean” things], the vitality that is in them ascends and is dissolved and absorbed into the light of the En Sof, blessed is He, which is His will, blessed be He, that is clothed in them, since therein there is no concealment of Countenance whatsoever to obscure His light, blessed be He. In like manner, the energy of the vital animal soul which is in the organs of the body of the person performing the commandment is also clothed in this performance, and it rises from the kelipah and is absorbed into the holiness of the precept, which is His will, blessed be He, and is dissolved into the light of the En Sof, blessed is He.

Shem MiShmuel, Passover

The Passover teachings repeatedly frame Egypt and redemption in terms of concealed holiness, spiritual extraction, and the transformation of material forces into service of God.

Sefat Emet, Genesis, Toldot 1

Sefat Emet, Genesis, Toldot 1:3

The Chidushei Harim teaches that every physical object contains a hidden divine spark, and the purpose of creation is for humans to recognize that all existence is sustained by Hashem; elevating even the most mundane and spiritually distant matters (like salt, straw, and worldly tastes) back to Hashem constitutes the work of clarifying and revealing the hidden light of Torah within creation, with the greater the distance from spirituality, the more valuable its elevation.

The Chidushei Harim explained that Yitzchak’s re-digging of the wells symbolizes removing externalities to uncover the inner divine spark. The wells named Eshek and Sitna, which Avimelech's men fought over, represent the weekdays, while the well named Rechovot, which they did not fight over, symbolizes Shabbos. Every object contains a spark of holiness that is hidden by nature and externalities. The purpose of creation is for humans to recognize and clarify that everything is sustained by Hashem. The pasuk "Wisdom cries out outside, in the streets it raises its voice" (Mishlei 1:20) refers to Torah being expanded in places of learning. The oral Torah aims to bring spiritual light into practical, physical experiences. The Midrash connects Rechovot with the expansion of holiness in the physical world, as stated in Devarim. The Avos' mission was to reveal the hidden light of Torah within creation. Yitzchak was initially deceived by Eisav, believing that Eisav, as a "man of the field," was elevating the physical to Hashem. Eisav even asked about tithing from salt and straw, symbolizing the elevation of even the most mundane objects. Yitzchak's greatness, described as "growing very great," indicates his mastery over the Yetzer Hara, using it in service to Hashem. This aligns with the commandment to love Hashem with all one's heart, including the Yetzer Hara. The ‘tasty dishes’ Yitzchak asked Eisav to prepare symbolize uplifting worldly matters to Hashem. The more distant something is from spirituality, the more valuable its elevation. In places of hiddenness, the essence resides in the taste, which is both highly elevated and lowly. Yaakov, who was above nature and inherently holy, lacked this connection. Only by following Rivka’s prophetic guidance and tricking Yitzchak could he engage at this level, similar to what Yitzchak intended for Eisav. This allowed Yaakov to descend and then uplift the physical to the spiritual. Yitzchak’s statement, “The voice is the voice of Yaakov, and the hands are the hands of Eisav,” reflects this transformation, where the physical (hands) is elevated to the spiritual (voice).

And this is also the meaning of “He encompasses all worlds.” For example, when a man reflects upon an intellectual subject in his mind or upon a physical matter in his thoughts, then his intellect and thought encompass that subject whose image is formed in his thought or in his mind, but they do not encompass that subject in actual fact. The Holy One, blessed is He, however, of Whom it is written, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts…,” His Thought and Knowledge of all created beings actually encompass each and every creature, for [His Knowledge] is indeed its life-force and that which brings it into existence from nothingness into being in actual reality. And “He fills all worlds” is the life-force which clothes itself within the created being. It is powerfully contracted within it according to the intrinsic nature of the created being which is finite and limited in quantity and quality, i.e., its significance and importance. As for example, the sun whose body is finite and limited quantitatively being approximately one hundred and sixty-seven times the size of the globe of the earth, and whose quality and significance, namely, its light, is also limited as to the extent that it can give light, for it cannot illuminate indefinitely since it is a created being. Likewise, all created beings are finite and limited, for “From the earth to the heaven is a distance of 500 years….” (It is only after all these contractions and others like them, as His wisdom, blessed be He, has ordained that the light and life-force could invest itself even in the lower [created things], such as inanimate stones and dust. Stone, for example, its name even, אבן, indicates that its source is in the [Divine] Name which numerically equals fifty-two ב"ן, with an א, one, added to it from another Name, for a reason known to its Creator. Now the name ב"ן is itself of very high worlds, yet through numerous and powerful contractions, degree by degree, there descended from it a life-force very greatly condensed, until it could clothe itself in a stone. And this is the soul of the inanimate being, which gives it life and brings it into existence ex nihilo at every instant, as has been explained previously. This is the principle of “He fills all worlds,” which differs from the principle of “He encompasses all worlds.”)

Tanya, Part IV; Iggeret HaKodesh 26:16

Iggeret HaKodesh 26 gives one of the Alter Rebbe’s fullest treatments of the “exile of the Shekhinah” and the elevation of sparks through Torah, mitzvot, and proper use of materiality, especially in the context of exile and redemption.

That, too, is the etymological meaning of assur: the kelipah hovers over it and it cannot rise upward like that which is muttar, i.e., it is not tied and bound (assur) to the kelipah and is able to ascend by means of the person consuming it with his mind on G–d, or by any person serving G–d. For it is with the energy from this consumption that he studies and prays to G–d. Thus, from the energy extracted from that food are formed the the letters of Torah and of the prayers which ascend to G–d. Now, when malchut of Atzilut vests itself in kelipat nogah in order to extract the sparks that fell with the sin of Adam, and also the 288 sparks that fell with the shevirat hakelim, malchut of Atzilut, too, is then referred to as “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil” in relation to the z’eyr anpin of Atzilut [which does not descend there and is referred to as Tree of Life]. Now, the investment of malchut in kelipat nogah is the mysterium of the “Exile of the Shechinah,” “That man rules in man …” And this is the meaning of the statement in Raaya Mehemna: “But at the time that the Tree of Good and Evil dominates…, they….” That is, at the time of the exile of the Shechinah [who effuses to the chitzonim that are in kelipat nogah, from where the mixed multitude (erev rav) elicits, and from their extract the scholars of Torah are supported in the exile], the principal service of man, and the purpose of the occupation with Torah and the commandments, is to disencumber the sparks, as known from the Arizal. Therefore, the principal mode of study is in the deliberation and argumentation of the law of issur and hetter, impurity and purity, in order to disencumber the permitted and pure from the proscribed and impure by means of the deliberation and argumentation of the law—with wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. For as known, the Torah derives from chochmah. Thus it is only through chochmah that they shall be disencumbered, i.e., the Supreme chochmah of Atzilut which is vested in malchut of Atzilut [the principium of the Oral Torah (according to the principium of abba founded barta)]—which (in turn) is vested in malchut of Yetzirah, the principium of the Mishnayot (and the Beraytot that are vested in the kelipat nogah which corresponds to the world of Yetzirah, for there begins the aspect of the evil inherent in the nogah), as known from the Arizal. Now, the intelligent will understand something yet more amazing, namely, what happens in Heaven above through the deliberation and elucidation of an adjudged ruling (halachah) of the Gemara and earlier and latter codifiers [which prior to this deliberation was in a state of concealment]: by means of this (deliberation), one elevates this ruling from the kelipot that were hiding and concealing it in such a way that it was not known at all, or that its reasoning was not clearly understood. For the reason (of the halachah) is the principium of the sefirah of the supreme chochmah whence [by the breaking of the vessels] sparks fell into the kelipot. (These sparks) are there in a state of exile because the kelipot domineer over them and hide the wisdom of the Torah from the upper and lower beings. That is why it is stated in Raaya Mehemna that “The problematic query is of the side of evil.” Now, the celestial beings do not have the power to disencumber and elevate that which is in kelipat nogah because of the breaking (of the vessels). Only the terrestrial beings (can do that), for they are vested in a material body—“hide of the snake,” which is of the kelipat nogah. They weaken its strength by crushing the passions and suppressing the sitra achara so that “all the workers of evil are dispersed.” That is why the celestial beings come to hear novelties of Torah from the terrestrial beings, what they discover and reveal of the secrets of wisdom which until then were in bondage in the exile. And every one of Israel is able to reveal secrets of wisdom, (to reveal) and to discover a new insight, whether it be in laws or in homiletics, in the revealed or in the esoteric parts (of Torah), according to the level of his soul’s root. Indeed, one is obliged to do so in order to perfect his soul by elevating all the sparks that fell to its part and lot, as known.

The passage discusses how Yaakov's statement "I will return in peace to my father's house" and the subsequent promise "and the Lord will be my God" represent successive elevations: first, a higher divine radiance is drawn down such that the divine name becomes merely an attribute (Elokim) relative to this new light; second, the stone monument becomes a dwelling place for this elevated divine presence, and the passage seeks to explain how an inanimate object can ascend to such a lofty spiritual state.

The primary work of serving God consists of nullifying evil and removing the obscuration of the heart, whereupon the goodness and divine light that shines within then reveals itself naturally; this explains the teaching that Torah and commandments were given only to refine creatures through them—purifying them so that goodness can shine within them.

Sulam on Zohar, Vayechi 210

When servants of the holy King perform actions below, they bind those actions to their roots above in the supernal worlds, for every physical thing in this world has a root in the higher realms; and when those things are taken and acted upon below, the corresponding action is awakened above in their root in the supernal worlds, as exemplified by hyssop and cedar wood that the Torah commands one to take for purification.

In every matter, physical action below is required to arouse corresponding effect above, as demonstrated by the kindling of lamps and burning of incense (regarding which it is written "oil and incense gladden the heart"), wherein these lower actions produce illumination and joy both below and above and effect a proper union of Chokhma and Bina, since action below awakens action above.

Contemporary Halakhic Problems, Vol II, Part I, Chapter II Blessings and Rituals

The Midrash teaches that commandments were given to purify mankind, a process compared to the refining of precious metals—just as metals must be separated from base substances through smelting to achieve purity, mitzvot are designed to refine human character by removing base traits and allowing spirituality to emerge.

"Mizvot were given solely in order to purify mankind," declares the Midrash (Bereshit Rabbah 44:1; Va-Yikra Rabbah 13:3). The term "le-zaref," meaning "to purify," is the Hebrew term employed to describe the refining or "purification" of precious metals. Man's personality combines a curious mixture of the noble and the base, the spiritual and the animal, the precious and the dross. Precious metals were not created in a pure state. In nature they exist only in tandem with base substances. The precious metal is obtained in a pure state only as the end product of the process of smelting and refining. "The word of God is pure" (Psalms 18:31) and acts as a purging and purifying agent. Commandments and rituals are designed to refine human character, to purge man of base traits and to allow human spirituality to shine forth.
