The Face of God and Inner Depth

These sources explore how panim—the human face and the face of God—connects to penimiyut, the inner spiritual dimension of a person and of Torah. The sources move from biblical accounts of divine encounter and the limits of human perception, through rabbinic teachings on imitating God's inner qualities, to Hasidic and Kabbalistic understandings of how divine love and revelation are accessed through inward transformation rather than external form.

What the sources say

The foundational texts describe panim as the mode of direct, unmediated encounter — Hashem spoke to Moshe "panim el panim" (Shemot 33:11), yet even Moshe could not see the Divine face and live (Shemot 33:20-23), and Rashi on Shemot 33:20 explains this as a withholding of permission rather than a physical impossibility, while Ramban on Shemot 33:20 locates the danger in the soul's own separation upon such vision.

Chazal and the meforshim read panim as the point where inwardness becomes visible between persons: the Gemara in Yevamot 117a:17 applies "as water reflects face to face, so does one heart to another" to the encounter of hearts, and Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch explains that "panim bifnim" describes the face penetrating into the other's face so that two people relate "be-fenimiyutam", in their inwardness.

Sinai itself is described as a "panim" event of this kind: Pesikta Rabbati 21 pictures Hashem gazing at each individual Israelite and saying "I am Hashem your God" as one would perceive oneself uniquely addressed by an image seen by many, and Rabbeinu Bahya, Devarim 5:4 and Ibn Ezra on Devarim 5:4 likewise treat "panim befanim" at Sinai as unmediated address rather than literal facial vision, a reading echoed by Guide for the Perplexed, Part 1 37:2, who identifies "panim el panim" with direct presence without an intervening angel.

Several later sources tie this directness of panim explicitly to penimiyut of Torah: HaKtav VeHaKabalah, Devarim 5:4 states that the Torah's lower, revealed matters allude to inner dimensions layered "penimim lifnimim" without end, and Imrei Binah שער הציצית דף ח, ג links the verse "chachmat adam ta'ir panav" with "panim befanim diber Hashem imachem" to describe the giving of Torah as an illumination of the penimiyut of Atzmus through Chochmah.

The Chassidic sources develop this most explicitly: Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 49 applies "ka-mayim ha-panim la-panim" to Hashem's concealment of His own infinite light for love of man, so that man in turn must set aside all he has to cleave to Him, and Tanya, Part IV; Iggeret HaKodesh 15 uses a father teaching a son "panim el panim" as a model for how external faculties carry and transmit inner ones.

On this reading, Torah is identified as the very penimiyut that the illuminated panim expresses: the Rebbe Rashab (Hemshech Samech Vov, Maamar 36) holds that through Torah the illumination of the Divine countenance reaches the primordial and lower human being, drawing from the penimiyut of Atik, the Rebbe Rashab (Hemshech Samech Vov, Maamar 29) connects this directly to the priestly blessing "May Hashem illuminate His face toward you" as an illumination of a person's face rooted in Torah's inner wisdom, and the Rebbe Rashab (Hemshech Samech Vov, Maamar 46) describes Torah itself as the penimiyut of the souls of Israel, where the external dimension of a higher level becomes the internal dimension of the lower.

On the human side, Chiddushei Aggadot, Sanhedrin 99 holds that a person is found through his face because the face is where the person exists in actuality, while Beit Yaakov, Vaera 3 distinguishes "panim" as what a person grasps through wisdom and understands in its intention from "achor" as what remains incomprehensible, locating the panim/penimiyut connection within human perception itself.

Exodus 33:20

God tells Moses that a human being cannot see His face and live, yet Moses may see God’s “back.” The passage establishes both the depth of divine encounter and the limit that preserves God’s transcendence—an important framework for understanding inner rather than surface apprehension.

Mishneh Torah, Human Dispositions 1:6-7

Maimonides explains that human beings should imitate God’s balanced and compassionate ways. The divine likeness is realized not through external appearance but through the inner formation of character and action.

[Our Sages] taught [the following] explanation of this mitzvah: Just as He is called "Gracious," you shall be gracious; Just as He is called "Merciful," you shall be merciful; Just as He is called "Holy," you shall be holy; In a similar manner, the prophets called God by other titles: "Slow to anger," "Abundant in kindness," "Righteous," "Just," "Perfect," "Almighty," "Powerful," and the like. [They did so] to inform us that these are good and just paths. A person is obligated to accustom himself to these paths and [to try to] resemble Him to the extent of his ability. How can one train himself to follow these temperaments to the extent that they become a permanent fixture of his [personality]? He should perform - repeat - and perform a third time - the acts which conform to the standards of the middle road temperaments. He should do this constantly, until these acts are easy for him and do not present any difficulty. Then, these temperaments will become a fixed part of his personality. Since the Creator is called by these terms and they make up the middle path which we are obligated to follow, this path is called "the path of God." This is [the heritage] which our Patriarch Abraham taught his descendants, as [Genesis 18:19] states: "for I have known Him so that he will command his descendants...to keep the path of God." One who follows this path brings benefit and blessing to himself, as [the above verse continues]: "so that God will bring about for Abraham all that He promised."

See, now. When a human being is born into the world he is given a soul (nephesh) from the primordial “animal” sphere, the sphere of purity, the sphere of those who are designated “Holy Wheels”-namely, the supernal order of angels. If he is more fortunate he will be endowed with a spirit (ruah) which appertains to the sphere of the Holy Hayoth. Should he possess still greater potential merit he is given a soul (neshamah) from the region of the Throne. These three grades of personality are the “maidservant”, the “manservant”, and the “bondwoman” of the King’s daughter. And if the newly created being deserves still more, the soul which is put into his bodily form derives through a process of emanation (aziluth) from the sphere of the “Only Daughter”, and is itself called “the King’s daughter”. If his merit is still greater he will be endowed with a spirit (ruah), deriving through emanation from the sphere of the “Central Pillar”, and its owner is then called “The son of the Holy One”, as it is written: “Sons are ye to the Lord your God” (Deut. 14, 1). Should he be of even greater worth he is given a soul (neshamah) from the sphere of Father and Mother, concerning which it is written: “And he breathed into his nostrils the breath (nishmath) of life” (Gen. 2, 7). What does “life” signify? It signifies the Divine Name YH; and therefore it is written of such souls: “Let the whole soul (all souls) praise KaH” (Ps. 150, 6). But if he should acquire still greater merit, the Holy Name TETRAGRAMMATON is granted to him in its fulness-the letters Yod, He, Vau, He, representing Man in the sphere of the supernal Aziluth, and he is said to be “in the likeness of his Lord”, and in him the words, “Have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing” (Gen. 1, 28), are properly fulfilled: for his dominion is indeed over all the firmaments and over all the Wheels and Seraphim and Living Beings (Hayoth) and over all the hosts above and below. It is therefore concerning one who has attained to the sphere of the “Only Daughter” and has derived his soul from thence that it says, “She shall not go out as the menservants do”.’

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 1-2

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 1-2

Rav Chaim Volozhiner presents Torah study as the central means by which a person cleaves to God, since Torah embodies divine wisdom and will. The work strongly articulates Torah’s inward presence within the learner rather than Torah as external information alone.

And first, I’ll focus my words on the matter of involvement with Torah for its own sake—what “for its own sake” means—for this too is connected to a horrible misunderstanding, for there are some who halt themselves from involvement with the holy Torah because they think that the definition of the matter of “for its own sake” is “with a great attachment, without interruption”. And there’s an evil even more pathological than this: in their thoughts they hypothesize that involvement with Torah without attachment amounts to nothing, and has no benefit (heaven forefend). And for that reason, when they observe that their heart/mind doesn’t arrive at the level where their learning would be with a constant attachment, they don’t even start to learn, and the result of this would be that the Torah will fade away (heaven forefend). And as the matter progresses, it will be explained (G-d willing) therefore, the high degree of the holy Torah and of the person who is involved with it [fem.] as it deserves. The matter of involvement with Torah for its own sake— The clear truth, is that “for its own sake” does not mean “attachment” as most of the world today hypothesizes. For our rabbis (OBM) stated in the midrash (Shokheir Tov) that King Dovid requested of Him (may He be blessed) that one who is involved with T’hillim should be considered by Him as if he was involved in [the laws of] skin lesions and habitations, because the involvement in the legal discussions of the Sha”s with depth and effort is a matter much more sublime and beloved before Him (blessed be He) than the recitation of T’hillim.

Panim be-fanim” expresses a more direct connection than “panim el panim,” in which the faces penetrate one another and establish an inner bond through which the two commune in their פנימיות.

HaKtav VeHaKabalah, Deuteronomy 5:4

HaKtav VeHaKabalah, Deuteronomy 5:4

Haktav Vehakabalah explains that Torah has an explicit layer and hidden inner depths, which Israel apprehended at Sinai when their understanding united with the divine speaker’s intent; therefore the word “עם,” signifying joining and unity, is associated with speech.

Tomer Devorah 1:1

Ramak teaches that a person resembles the Creator not through bodily form but through actions, especially by emulating the thirteen superior attributes of mercy.

Da'at Tevunot 158:10

Da'at Tevunot 158:10

Ramhal explains that although Hashem has no physical body, forms of Divine providence and influence are metaphorically called “face” and “back”: “face” signifies closeness and love, while “back” signifies distance, reflecting Israel’s relationship with Him.

Sefer HaBiurim II 6:8:5

Leshem explains that “face” denotes the place where the soul’s light and powers emerge through the vessels, whereas obstruction is called “back”; more generally, each inner level is “face” relative to the outer level above it, and greater inwardness signifies greater mercy and kindness, while greater externality signifies constriction and judgment.

The passage identifies the true human form with פנימיות התורה expressed through מחשבה, דיבור, and מעשה—especially fulfilling mitzvot and restraining one’s will before Hashem’s—so that a person becomes “like the One Above”; it distinguishes the inner אדם of will, wisdom, and character from the outer אדם expressed through the body, while stressing that human perfection joins the inner and outer in actual practice.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 36:5

The Alter Rebbe explains that the purpose of creation is that divine light be revealed within the lowest world. This gives penimiyut a cosmic meaning: the hidden inner vitality of Torah and godliness is meant to become present within ordinary embodied life.

Clearly, the purpose of the hishtalshelut of the worlds and their descent, degree by degree, is not for the sake of the higher worlds, because for them this is a descent from the light of His Countenance, blessed be He. But the ultimate purpose [of creation] is this lowest world, for such was His will, blessed be He, that He shall have satisfaction when the sitra achara is subdued and the darkness is turned to light, so that the Divine light of the En Sof, blessed is He, shall shine forth in the place of the darkness and sitra achara throughout this world, all the more strongly and intensely, with the excellence of light emerging from darkness, than its effulgence in the higher worlds, where it shines through “garments” and in concealment of the Countenance, which screen and conceal the light of the En Sof, blessed is He, in order that they should not dissolve out of existence. This was so because of the revelation of His will, blessed be He, in the Decalogue constituting the epitome of the whole Torah, which is His innermost will, blessed be He, and His wisdom, wherein there is no concealment of the Countenance at all, as is written, “For by the light of Your Countenance You gave us the Torah of life.” Therefore they [the Israelites at Sinai] repeatedly expired out of existence, as the Rabbis have taught that at each [Divine] utterance their souls took flight…but the Holy One, blessed is He, restored it to them with the dew with which He will revive the dead. This is the dew of the Torah which is called “might,” as the Rabbis have said, “Everyone who occupies himself with the Torah is revived by the dew of the Torah….” Later, however, the sin [of the Golden Calf] caused both them and the world to become gross again—until the end of days, when the dross of the body and of the world will be purified, and they will be able to apprehend the revealed Divine light which will shine forth to Israel by means of the Torah, called “might.” And, as a result of the overflow of the illumination on Israel, the darkness of the gentiles will also be lit up, as is written, “And the nations shall walk by your light…,” and, “House of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the L–rd,” again, “And the glory of the L–rd will be revealed, and together all flesh will see…,” and, “To go into the holes of the rocks, and into the clefts of the boulders, for fear of the L–rd and for the glory of His majesty.” And as we pray, “Reveal Yourself in the majesty of Your glorious might over all the inhabitants of Your terrestrial world….”

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 49:5

The chapter portrays divine love as an intimate, face-to-face bond in which God’s love is revealed through Torah and mitzvot. Human inwardness is awakened by recognizing the depth of divine self-disclosure invested in practice.

To quote [again] “As water mirrors the reflection of a face”: As the Holy One, blessed is He, has, as it were, laid down and set aside, figuratively speaking, His great infinite light and has stored it away and concealed it by means of three different kinds of “contractions”—and all this because of His love for lowly man, in order to raise him up to G–d, for “Love impels the flesh,” how much more, and an infinite number of times more, is it fitting that a man also should relinquish and set aside all he possesses, both spiritually and physically, and renounce everything in order to cleave to Him, blessed be He, with attachment, desire, and longing, without any hindrance, within or without, neither of body nor soul, nor money, nor wife and children. When the intelligent person will reflect on these matters in the depths of his heart and brain, then—as water mirrors the image of a face—his soul will spontaneously be kindled and it will clothe itself in a spirit of benevolence, willingly to lay down and resolutely to abandon all he possesses, in order only to cleave to Him, blessed be He, and to be absorbed into His light with an attachment and longing, and so forth, in a manner of “osculation” and the attachment of spirit to spirit, as has been explained earlier. But how does the attachment of spirit to spirit take place? To this end it is stated [further on], “And these words shall be…upon your heart. And you shall speak of them….” As is explained in Etz Chaim that the union of “osculation” is essentially the union of chabad with chabad, that is, concentration in the Torah; while the mouth, as the outlet of the breath and its emergence into a revealed state represents the category of speech engaged in words of the Torah, for “By the word that proceeded out of the mouth of G–d does man live.”

Tanya, Part IV; Iggeret HaKodesh 15:15

The Alter Rebbe discusses Torah as divine wisdom and describes Torah study as union with God’s thought and will. This is a direct account of Torah’s penimiyut: through study, the person inwardly unites with the divine intellect and desire expressed in Torah.

The aspect of yesod is, by way of example, the bond by which the father binds his intellect to the intellect of his son while teaching him with love and willingness, for he wishes his son to understand. Without this (bond), even if the son would hear the very same words from the mouth of his father [as he speaks and studies to himself], he would not understand them as well as now when his father ties his intellect to him and speaks with him face to face—with love and desire, because he desires very much that his son understand. Now, these attributes are the external aspects of the soul. In them are vested the inner attributes, i.e., the faculties of love and awe…, analogous to the father who influences his son because of his love (for the son) and withholds his influence because of his dread and fear that (his son) might come to some downfall, Heaven forfend.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 35:9

Tanya states that drawing the light and illumination of the Shechinah onto the body and its animal soul requires performing practical mitzvot through the body, thereby fully incorporating the body’s activity into Hashem’s light and will as the third garment of the divine soul.

Sfas Emes explains that Moshe’s gathering of Israel, the command concerning Shabbat, and the construction of the Mishkan are interconnected, since Israel’s communal elevation brings about the dwelling of the Shechinah among them, as expressed by “within them” rather than “within it.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 41:3-5

Tanya states that a person should contemplate Hashem standing before him and examining his heart, serving with awe like one standing before a king, and should recognize that the אור־אין־סוף is clothed in Torah’s letters and wisdom and in tzitzit and tefillin, through which divine light is drawn upon the “portion of God above” within his body.

Maamarim Melukatim

The passage explains that “בקשו פני” encompasses both heartfelt supplication and searching for ways to correct one’s affairs, corresponding to prayer as avodah shebalev—working within the heart and working through the heart—and it introduces “ומבשרי אחזה אלוקה” as referring to tangible perception of Elokus, including Divine providence.

Michtav MeEliyahu (Rav Dessler)

Michtav MeEliyahu (Rav Dessler)

The passage states that each Jew’s inner point of holiness joins with the inner holiness of Israel across all generations, especially through spiritual love of Torah; even a yeshivah student in the present day thereby unites with the students of Beit Shammai, Beit Hillel, and other great sages.

Rav Kook (Ein Aya, Shabbat 9:17)

Ein Aya, Shabbat 9:17

The Torah, which is the form of humanity and the supreme thought that makes a person human, is also the form of the entire world; after the Torah imprints its seal on the human heart, the divine ideals of true Torah become rooted in the essence of the universe's soul, and therefore the Torah was fittingly given on the sixth day of the month, corresponding to humanity's creation on the sixth day of creation.

Rav Kook (Ein Aya, Shabbat 9:116)

Ein Aya, Shabbat 9:116

Kook states that the singular soul carrying the light of all existence cannot perceive its own hidden uniqueness, recognizing only its personal nothingness in supreme humility, while divine truth reveals its inner point and its connection to giving the Torah; this is expressed in God’s rebuke to Moshe, “Moshe, you are a liar,” since he occupies the secret of thought and the beginning of creation.

Rav Kook (Ein Aya, Berakhot 1:131)

Ein Aya, Berakhot 1:131

Kook contrasts human influence, which acts only on another’s external aspect, with the Holy One’s influence, which reaches both the external and inner dimensions of all beings because their existence is sustained entirely by His will and effluence.

Rav Eliezer Melamed (Peninei Halakhah, Shemitah and Yovel 1:4)

Peninei Halakhah, Shemitah and Yovel 1:4

The passage explains that the seventh day and seventh year reveal the sacred inner dimension: Shabbat allows a person’s soul to emerge through Torah and delight in Hashem, while Shemittah renews Israel’s faith, Torah study, compassion, social love, and longing for a world perfected through kindness and truth.

Panim and Pnimiyus: Face and Inner Reality

These sources explore how the Hebrew word panim (face) transcends physical appearance to signify presence, relationship, and inwardness. Biblical passages establish panim as an expression of divine favor and intimate encounter, while rabbinic and Hasidic texts develop the theological connection between the external face and the inner spiritual essence, culminating in the idea that true knowledge and love operate at the level of pnimiyus—the hidden, inward dimension—rather than external distinction.

The Maharal of Prague presents the Written and Oral Torah as divinely complementary modes of wisdom transmission. The Written Torah provides the concise core text, while the Oral Torah—transmitted through an unbroken rabbinic chain—expands and elaborates those teachings for practical understanding and endless interpretive engagement. Together they form a unified covenantal system in which divine wisdom enters the world.
